Washington, DC--The Wizards have now won 8 of their last 10.
Seriously.
This week they went 3-4, with huge wins over Phoenix and Boston to end the week. I honestly went into last night's game against the Celtics thinking, "well, it was a nice run, but that's the end of that." A 13 point streak--capped by two John Wall 3's--in the 3rd quarter started making my head hurt.
It was the first time in 7 years that a Washington basketball team has won 8 of 10 games. Yes, last week's games were against weak opponents. Not this week. 3 of the 4 teams had winning records, and Boston is the #1 team in the NBA. Did I mention that Blatche is still nursing his right ankle?
John Wall is quickly becoming one of the NBA's best 1-2 players. Not many guys can handle the point, shoot from anywhere, and guard the other team's best player--even if that player is playing the 3. A certain Miami Heat PG comes to mind, and I'll be the first guy to take the heat (ha) with such a bold comparison.
Wall is improving on the parts of his game that worried most DC area fans. His ability to find the open man, and not force shots, was unleashed this week, especially against the Suns. That game was the polar opposite of his 36 point game in Chicago back in November. If you remember, he only had 2 assists and 3 boards in the loss to the Bulls. Wednesday night he went into the 4th quarter with only 10 points--but finished the night with 23. He also added 9 boards, 2 steals, and a season high 11 assists.
So he didn't shoot the lights out, so what? Rashad Lewis chipped in 10 in the 1st quarter; and Andray Blatche added 8 in the 3rd on a bum ankle. He has talent around him, and each game is helping him understand that.
Playoffs? Doubtful. But if Wall and the Wiz' keep playing as a team, and they get a nice lottery pick, things could be exciting next season.
