Broncos hold on after late rally by the Bills, 17-14

00 - 07 - 07 - 03 - 17

00 - 00 - 00 - 14 - 14

BUFFALO (AP) — After getting a pregame pep talk from the Duke himself, Jay Cutler couldn't help but sparkle in his regular-season debut in the NFL.

Cutler, the eleventh overall pick in this year's draft, threw for 136 yards and two touchdows, Travis Henry rushed for 122 yards, and the Broncos held out against a last minute frantic rally by the Buffalo Bills in a 17-14 win Sunday.

"It was a great game," said Cutler who recorded a 155.2 passer rating. "We did everything right, we came in here running the football, Henry ran well, overall we just did a terrific job today, and we get the win."

Brandon Marshall who hurled in 4 catches for 39 yards caught the first touchdown of the game and Javon Walker caught the last Broncos touchdown to put them up 14-0 late in the third quarter, with 6:34 left they made it 17-0 after Jason Elam converted a 33 yard field goal.

It wasn't all roses for the Broncos though, after they went into prevent defense, the Bills drove down the field and J.P. Losman found Josh Reed in the endzone for a 12 yard touchdown reception.

That wasn't enough though. The Bills recovered the onside kick and J.P. Losman tossed a 42 yard touchdown bomb to Roscoe Parrish with 10 seconds left to make it a 3 point ball game.

Denver managed to withstand the final onside kick and ran out the clock.

"It was a win for us," said Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. "We went to sleep a little in the last quarter, but that's ok, we have 16 more weeks to develop ourselves."

Despite being up 17-0 at one point the Broncos managed to convert just 2 of 12 of their third downs and the Bills recorded 304 total yards of offense.

"Were going to get better," said linebacker D.J. Williams who recorded 7 tackles and a interception.

Bly's 2 defensive TD's and Walkers 4 reception TD's lift Broncos to 52-16 win

10 - 06 - 00 - 00 - 16

14 - 03 - 21 - 14 - 52

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos defense held the Raiders to 335 total yards of offense and held them scoreless in the second half as the Broncos galloped all over the Raiders.

Dre' Bly recovered a fumble 65 yards and returned a interception 37 yards -- both into scores and Jay Cutler threw for 191 yards and 4 touchdowns -- all to Javon Walker as the Broncos won big, 52-16.

"We couldn't stop them," said defensive tackle Warren Sapp. "It was a nightmare." The Raiders haven't beaten the Denver Broncos since November 28th 2004, when the Raiders edged the Broncos 25-24.

The Raiders throughout the first three halfs managed to halt the Broncos run game, but Travis Henry couldn't be stopped in the end as he ran all over the Raiders in the final quarter, rushing 29 times for 137 yards.

The Broncos defense which is allowing just 15 points a game forced 4 turnovers, two into direct defensive touchdowns and despite Andrew Walter throwing for 307 yards off of 44 attempts finished the game with a 72.8 rating.

Ronald Curry caught 6 receptions for 130 yards and 71 yard touchdown, Jerry Porter recorded 1 more catch for 101 yards and a 34 yard touchdown but both were out-showed by Javon Walker who recorded 5 catches for 104 yards and 4 touchdowns, if you can count, that's just one reception which didn't turn into a score.

Mike Shanahan told local media that it was "Jay Cutler's day," and that he put on a showing despite being in a conservative offense that is based primarily on their run game.

Despite fumble in endzone, Jaguars hold on to clinch 15-14 nail biter

03 - 03 - 06 - 03 - 15

00 - 14 - 00 - 00 - 14

DENVER (AP) — It all looked like a sloppy game. Jay Cutler left the game early with an abdominal strain and didn't return, the Jaguars fumbled the ball in the endzone after celebrating early and the Broncos gave up a 14-6 lead after halftime.

It was just never going to go right for the Denver Broncos as Byron Leftwhich threw for 257 yards, Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for 84 yards and wide receiver Reggie Williams wrecked havoc recording 6 receptions for 124 yards including one touchdown as the Jaguars defeated the Broncos, 15-14 this past sunday.

Early in the game, the Jaguars got off to a great start, they drove down the field 75 yards in 11 plays, including a 23 yard pass to Jones and then a 29 yard pass to Brown to set up a field goal after a impressive goal-line stand by the Broncos.

The Broncos couldn't get anything going offensively, Jay Cutler kept overthrowing receivers and was hit hard on play that ruled him out of the game with an abdominal strain with 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

"That was hard for us," said head coach Mike Shanahan. "We needed Jay out there and he was sidelined unfortunately."

The Jaguars went on to extend their led with 8:08 left in the second quarter when Josh Scobee kicked a 32 yard field goal to make the score 6-0.

But the Broncos wouldn't quit despite having no offense throughout the first half, running back Travis Henry ran in a 26 yard touchdown run with 4:01 left, but it came back after a holding call.

5 plays later Patrick Ramsey, the fill in quarterback found Javon Walker in the back of the endzone for a 6 yard touchdown pass, coincidently, his 6th receiving touchdown pass of the season with 2:12 left on the clock.

The Broncos got the ball back with 1:50, and after a hail-mary type throw, Ramsey found Brandon Marshall downfield for a 27 yard gain, which set up a 5 yard run by Mike Bell with 1 minute left and up 14-6.

Jacksonville had just 15 rushing yards in the first half compared to Denver's 65.

"When Henry went out with the injury, I knew I had to fill in well," said running back Mike Bell who rushed for 56 yards in 8 carries.

The Jaguars started off the third quarter much how they started off the first quarter, after a long 6:39, 14 play-74 yard drive, Leftwich found Reggie Williams free in the endzone for a 6 yard touchdown pass, they failed the two point conversion when Jones-Drew fumbled in the endzone giving the Broncos still a 14-12 lead.

A few series later late in the third quarter and Reggie Williams was on his way into the endzone for a 58 yard touchdown would-be-reception, but he fumbled on the 1 yard line and Champ Bailey picked it up (above) and returned it 56 yards back to mid-field.

Jacksonville started the fourth and final quarter strongly, kicking a 37 yard field goal to put them ahead, 15-14 with just 8:13 left.

With 1:42 left, Ramsey was picked off by Rashean Mathis deep downfield on fourth down to give the Jaguars the win as they ran out the clock and improved to 3-0.

The Broncos face the defending world champion the 3-0 Indianapolis Colts next weekend.
