Hawks Slog Past Niners, 21-3

Familiar, yet strange.

Matt Hasselbeck made his tepidly anticipated first return to Seattle as a former Seahawk and promptly set about amply demonstrating that if anything is left in his tank, it's only fumes, vindicating the Hawks' decision to part ways with him after last season. Better options would have been retirement for Hasselbeck and feeding the Seahawks a steady diet of Frank Gore for the 49ers. Hasslebeck only completed one-third of his 33 pass attempts. Gore averaged 4.9 yards per pop, but only got a dozen totes. Something wrong with that picture? Some adaptive AI is needed somewhere. The game’s final score was set by halftime, and the stands steadily emptied as the scoreless second half wore on through a constant rainfall. The more significant event of the day was Seattle’s loss of Ronnie Brown to a broken collarbone, effectively putting an end to his bid to be 2011's comeback player of the year. The Seahawks will have to make a deep playoff run for Brown to see any more action in this campaign.

Things began with an exchange of three and out’s, Seattle’s including sacks of Carson Palmer by Parys Haralson and Ras-I Dowling. The Seahawks, however, got on the board in their second series, with Marshawn Lynch punching in from a yard out after a 7 yard run by Brown. After another swap of punts, a Hasselbeck screen pass to Gore went 66 yards to the Seattle 19, but Hasselbeck’s next three throws hit the ground and the San Francisco had to settle for a 36 yard Nick Folk field goal. No more points would come the Niners’ way the rest of the day. Leon Washington’s 53 yard kickoff return put the ball at the San Francisco 35, and the short field was turned into a 4 yard touchdown pass from Palmer to Deon Butler two plays into the second quarter. With 4:46 to go before the break, Lofa Tatupu logged a sack-fumble combo and Tony Hargrove recovered just inside the 50. Conversion of the turnover looked like it was going to fail when Taylor Mays picked off Palmer at the 49er 24, but Mike Williams separated Taylor from the ball and A.J. Green fell on it at the 17. Amidst the mayhem a pass interference flag was thrown and would have negated the interception had Mays held onto the ball. As it was, declining the penalty netted the Hawks a bigger gain. The next play was Green’s 10th touchdown reception of the season for what proved to be the final tally of the day.

A sack-fumble combo by Lofa Tatupu and Tony Hargrove’s recovery led to the final score of the game.

Aso was owning Frisco’s receivers all day.

Week 12 Matchup

Seattle Seahawks (7-3) at Cleveland Browns (2-8)

The Seahawks already have one more win than they did last year and still have six games to play, beginning with their third straight game against an Andrew Luck Sweepstakes contestant. Despite their humble 2-8 record, one of the Browns’ wins is the only blot on Arizona’s record, so the Hawks don’t need to be caught napping and let the Brownies prove that “any given Sunday” thing another time. A Seattle win would make the Seahawks 4-0 vs. the AFC this season.

Last Week

Seahawks 21, 49ers 3

Dolphins 27, Browns 22

Last Meeting:

11-4-07- Browns 33, Seahawks 30

Series Record

Seahawks lead 11-5

Key Injuries

SEA: RB Ronnie Brown (broken collarbone, 9 w)

Hawks Down Browns, 26-3

For the second straight week, the Seattle Seahawks’ defense kept an opposing offense out of the end zone. The sheer awesomeness of that feat is diminished, however, by the factoid that it was accomplished whilst scrimmaging against one of the alleged “teams” vying for the future services of one Andrew Austen Luck, Esq., to-wit: the Cleveland ****e Stains. The Stains’ cause in that endeavor was greatly aided by the young man whose status is threatened by said Master Luck, Daniel “Colt” McCoy. The Unreal McCoy completed only 9 of 22 pass attempts, no more than two to any alleged receiver, as the Stains amassed a whopping 177 yards of total offense, 42% of which was garnered by Peyton Hillis. The Seahawks, for their part, seemed uninterested in embarrassing the Browns too thoroughly as they plodded to a 26-3 win.

Cleveland’s lone score came after the Seahawks opened the game with a three and out, with Phil Dawson hitting a 43 yard field goal. Had the Browns not recovered a Hillis fumble forced by Chris Clemons to preserve the drive, they would have been shut out. Seattle responded to with a 33 yard touchdown pass from Carson Palmer to Marshawn Lynch, who went 22 yards after the catch. With 11:44 left in the half, on the first play after Jon Ryan’s punt was downed at the 5, Leroy Harris sacked McCoy for a safety. With 17 ticks to spare, Lynch made the halftime score 16-3 by punching in from the 1 a play after a 19 yard reception by A.J. Green.

Palmer found Deon Butler for a 6 yard TD at the 1:23 mark of the third quarter, and after the Browns turned the ball over on downs at the Seattle 30 with 13:43 remaining in the game, it was Jake Time. Olindo Mare missed a 47 yard field goal attempt with 6:44 to go, but after the Browns failed to convert a 4th down at their 35, he hit a 41-yarder on the first play after the 2 minute warning.

L: Marshawn Lynch got the Seahawks on the board with a 33 yard catch and run. R: A.J. Green eludes Abram Elam to
add to his yards after the catch.

L: Leroy Hill closes in for a safety sack. R: John Clay got to do a little open field running.

Week 13 Matchup

Seattle Seahawks (8-3) vs. St. Louis Rams (7-4)

Week 13 brings the Seahawks their first rematch of the season. Back in Week 2, when Carson Palmer was not yet ready for prime time, Seattle struggled in a 15-10 loss that dropped them to 0-2 and made the Rams 2-0. Since then the Hawks have gone 8-1 to go up a game over St. Louis in the division standings. It’s critical for Seattle to avoid a sweep that would deal a big blow to its burgeoning playoff prospects.

Last Week

Seahawks 26, Browns 3

Rams 34, 49ers 13

Last Meeting:

9-18-11- Rams 15, Seahawks 10

Series Record

Seahawks lead 11-6
