Offseason News

Coaching Changes
The big news out this week was the firing of Rich Rod along with Jim Tressel stepping down due to rumored improper benefits allegations. Michigan decided to let Rich Rod go after finishing 8-5 this season. Many contribute it to his run in with the NCAA and an unhappy alumni base. To replace him Michigan has hired Nevada's Chris Ault to bring the Pistol offense to Ann Arbor (Michigan now using Nevada's playbook). After putting together a 12-1 season in 2010 Ault takes over the reigns of a historic powerhouse that is in chaos. Fortunately for him he was left with one of the best running QBs in the nation along with a top 5 recruiting class. Tressel on the other hand will be replaced by assistant coach Luke Fickell for the time being. Also it has been announced the Terrelle Pryor, Dan Herron, and Devier Posey have all declared for NFL draft thus avoiding their 5 game suspension to start the season.

Other coaching news involves Urban Meyer. The outstanding Gator coach announced due to health reasons he is resigning from Florida. This news comes as a shock to many as over the past few years the Gators have been one of the most successful teams in the NCAA winning 2 national title under Meyer's short tenure. However Gator fans were delighted to hear former Texas head coach in waiting Will Mushchamp, has accepted the offer. Coach Boom will look to keep Florida at the high level they have been under the Meyer regime. Muschamp will be bringing the pro style attack to the Swamp with Charlie Weiss as its architect (Florida playbook now pro style). It will be interesting to see if this change helps or hurts the Gators. They also will now be implementing a 3-4 defensive attack.

Notable NFL Declarees
Mark Ingram (Alabama)
Ed Wesley (TCU)
Landry Jones (Oklahoma)
Darren Evans (Virginia Tech)
Greg McCoy (TCU)
Jon Baldwin (Pitt)
Terrelle Pryor (Ohio State)
Devier Posey (Ohio State)
Dan Herron (Ohio State)
Roddy Jones (Georgia Tech)

**Recruiting Update**
New Mexico
The Lobos added one more signee to the 2010 class a 2 star wideout from Yukon, OK. This puts the Lobos class officially at 17. Not highly ranked Coach Redfoot hopes many of these freshman can either come in to push for starting roles or more so provide depth and develop so they can take over as starters in a few year.

Nationally
Here's a look at the top 25 recruiting class

2011 Preseason Look
It's finally here again! The 2011 season opens this weekend and everyone is undefeated at the moment. The New Mexico Lobos field a team with very familiar faces this year except with a year of experience under their collective belts. Austin will try and learn from his long list of freshman mistakes and make his sophomore campaign spectacular. Here's a look at this years offensive starters.

QB: #8 Tarean Austin So 78 Ovr
HB: #1 Demond Dennis Jr 77 Ovr
FB: #37 Chris Biren Jr(RS) 62 Ovr
WR: #81 Lamaar Thomas Jr 86 Ovr
WR: #84 Ty Kirk Jr (RS) 81 Ovr
Slot: #19 Myles Daughtry So(RS) 76 Ovr
TE: #97 Lucas Reed Jr(RS) 69 Ovr
LT: #74 Byron Bell Sr(RS) 74 Ovr
LG: #61 Calvin McDowney So(RS) 66 Ovr
C: #63 Dillon Farrell So(RS) 76 Ovr
RG: #75 Jon Washington Sr(RS) 73 Ovr
RT: #71 Darryl Johnson So(RS) 70 Ovr

The 2011 Lobos offense returns 8 starters on offense including playmaking wideouts 1st team preseason All-MWC Lamaar Thomas and 2nd team preseason All-MWC Ty Kirk. The 3 starters they did lose were all offensive lineman. Returning starter Bell and Farrell will attempt to anchor a younger offensive front. Last year this unit was very solid at time but very weak at others. Coach Redfoot is looking consistency this year out of this front 5. 1st team All-MWC last year and preseason 1st team All-MWC RB James Wright will be sharing carries with Dennis. This year Coach Redfoot hopes Dennis stays injury free and the two can slowly grind down opponents as the season wears on. Now a look at 2011 defensive starters:

LE: #88 Johnathan Rainey Sr(RS) 85 Ovr
RE: #48 Jaymar Latchinson Sr(RS) 71 Ovr
DT: #49 Ugo Uzodinma Jr(RS) 77 Ovr
DT: #92 Reggie Ellis Jr(RS) 76 Ovr
LOLB: #39 Joe Stoner Jr(RS) 71 Ovr
MLB: #58 Carmen Messina Sr(RS) 94 Ovr
ROLB: #46 Spencer Merritt Jr(RS) 74 Ovr
CB: #29 DeShawn Mills Jr(RS) 75 Ovr
CB: #8 Anthony Hooks Sr 73 Ovr
Nickel: #2 Emmanuel McPhearson Jr 71 Ovr
Dime: #5 Ravonne Carter So 69 Ovr
FS: #17 Freddy Young Jr(RS) 73 Ovr
SS: #28 Bubba Forrest Sr(RS) 73 Ovr

This year's New Mexico defense returns 9 starter from 2010 squad. The big news for Lobos during offseason was the return of preseason 2nd team All-American Carmen Messina. The nations leading leader in solo tackles last year decided to comeback for his senior campaign after debating leaving for the NFL. He will however not have the disruptive for inside that was 1st team All-American Peter Gardner and his 10 sacks this year. That void will be filled by junior Ugo Uzodinma who slides over to take Gardner's place on the line. Junior DT Reggie Ellis takes over Ugo's spot. Only playing in select goaline roles, Ellis beat out senior Adam Kennedy and redshirt freshman Calvin Smith for the starting role. The back 7 return 6 starters from last year's squad. Anthony Hooks has been moved over to the #2 corner spot while Mills steps up to fill the top spot.

On special teams New Mexico returns their two specialists senior kicker James Aho and sophomore punter Ben Skaer. Both put together very solid years last year and look to build on that success in 2011.

New Mexico Preseason All-MWC
1st Team - James Wright
1st Team - Lamaar Thomas

The Buckeyes start off number one but have a lot to replace. With Pryor and crew gone along with Tressell no longer at the helm quite impressive they are ranked this high. The defending champs come in at #5. They lose stud RB Ed Wesley, veteran QB Andy Dalton, and playmaking WR Jeremy Kerley. However there is tons of talent waiting in the wing. Three teams to keep an eye on: Alabama, Oklahoma, and Auburn. Bama is stacked this year. Julio Jones, Courtney Upshaw, Trent Richardson and Donte Hightower are all back and ready to challenge for a title. Oklahoma lost Landry Jones and Travis Lewis but are absolutely stacked at wideout and have a solid core of RBs. If sophomore Drew Allen can throw the ball with some kind of accuracy the Sooners could challenge. Nick Fairley and Cam Newton missed much of 2010 campaign with injuries. Their back and ready for action along with wideout Darvin Adasm, corner Neiko Thorpe and runningback Mike Dyer. Look for the Tigers to make some noise in the SEC West if they stay healthy.

Re: Beginner Dynasty

Team looks good but you've got a tough schedule this year. Looking forward to an upset or two (since you get TCU and Utah on your home field)

Can't believe Ryan Williams left for Miami. Smh.

Re: Beginner Dynasty

Lobos Can't Hang With Bulldogs For Four Quarters

Athens, GA -- The Lobos started their 2011 campaign between the hedges in Athens, GA against the 2010 SEC #13 Georgia Bulldogs. Last season New Mexico travelled to Eugene, OR for opening game and lost a tight one 24-14. This year Coach Redfoot's squad hoped they could pull the upset off this time. UGA returned sophomore QB Aaron Murray along with superstar wideout A.J. Green and solid RB Washaun Ealey. On the defensive side the Dawgs were headed by preseason All-American Shawn Williams.

Ealey would establish himself early. On 3rd and short Ealey made 2 defenders miss then went 61 yds for the Bulldogs score giving them the 7-0 lead. The Lobos would attempt to respond. However after picking up 2 first downs disaster would strike. Sophomore QB Tarean Austin would look deep for sophomore wideout Myles Daughtry. The pass would go off Daughtry's hands, bounce around between 2 UGA defenders before finally being picked off. The defending SEC champs would make them pay. Thanks a few long pass plays the Bulldogs moved into Lobos territory. After a few more powerful runs by Ealey, he would cap off the drive with a short TD run. 14-0 Bulldogs. Austin and the Lobos offense would come firing back. Putting together a 10 play 70 yd drive that ate up about 3 min, the Lobos would put a dent UGA's early lead with a short Demond Dennis TD run. 14-7 Georgia. The quarter would end with the Bulldogs once again on the move.

That drive however would end early in the 2nd quarter at midfield forcing a punt by last year's national punter of the year Drew Butler. New Mexico would take control of the quarter with another impressive drive. This time 14 plays for 59 yds eating up just shy of 4 min of game clock. The big news in this drive would be the injury to Shawn Williams. The preseason all american would break his tailbone tackling backup runningback James Wright. The UGA defense would recover though from the blow and come up with a big stop inside the 5. On 1st down Tyson would bust through the Lobos offensive line and drop Dennis for a short loss. Then after an incomplete pass the Bulldog D would get in the backfield again this time dropping Austin for a long sack. James Aho would trot on the field and knock through his 1st FG of the 2011 season from 33 yds out. 14-10 UGA. The rest of the quarter would turn into a defensive stalemate as both teams would force 3 and outs until Georgia would run the clock out of the half. The Lobos would head into the half surprisingly only down 4.

The opening kickoff would set the tone of the whole 2nd half. Senior cornerback Anthony Hooks would receive the deep kickoff from UGA kick Blair Walsh, spring upfield and get popped by Georgia defender. The ball would go squirting free and Israel Troupe would scoop it up for the Bulldogs and return it 17 yds for the TD giving the Bulldogs a sudden 21-10 lead. It would not get any better New Mexico as after another solid drive, Austin would throw his 2nd INT of the game. A few plays later Ealey would again bust through the New Mexico defense, this time on his way to 56 yd TD ru. 28-10 Bulldogs. The next Lobos drive would almost be a perfect mirror of their previous drive as again the would move the ball into UGA territory. Then for the 3rd time of the day Austin would throw an INT. However the Lobos weren't giving up yet. On the first play of UGA ensuing drive junior DT Ugo Uzodinma would pop Ealey and force a fumble. Emmanuel McPhearson would sweep in from his nickel position and scoop the ball up and race into the endzone for 22 yd fumble return for a TD. 28-17 Bulldogs. It looked like the Lobos were back in the game. The game would head into the 4th with Georgia again on the move.

In the 4th quarter the Lobos would finally fall apart. After hanging in for the majority of the game the Bulldogs would pull away in front of their home crowd. Murray would cap off a pounding drive with a TD toss to stud WR A.J. Green who had a relatively quiet day. 35-17 Georgia. New Mexico would drive twice more inside Georgia territory with one ending on 4th down and the other an INT by Austin. Tarean finished the day with 4 picks and 0 TD. Ealey however would have cap his incredible game with another late 4th quarter TD to put the final score at 42-17 Georgia Bulldogs.

Washaun Ealey finished the day with 28 carries for 255 yds and an impressive 4 TDs. His outstanding performance would give him NCAA Player of the Week honors. For New Mexico the bright spot would be MLB Carmen Messina. Picking up where he left off last year the senior would record 13 tackles (10 solo) and TFL. Coach Redfoot would state after the game that Austin would get the start in 2 weeks against hated rival New Mexico State Aggies but that his leash was very short. Georgia opened the year 1-0 while the Lobos fell to a disappointing 0-1.

Around the NCAA
- #3 Oregon shocked on the road losing at unranked Kansas State 21-17
- The Champs Fall: #5 TCU suffers a 2 TD loss to rival Baylor
- Tulsa shocks the world beating #6 Sooners in Gaylord-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium 24-20

- Due to impressive opening wins both Kansas State and Baylor move into Top 25

Recruiting Update
C (#55) Nathan Kirk ** 6'3" 278 lbs BALANCED Stephenville, TX
TE (#45) Terrance Perry *** 6'6" 229 lbs BLOCKING Uvalde, TX
OLB (#54) J.D. Jackson *** 6'2" 198 lbs RUN STOPPER Clovis, NM
DE (#93) Morris Rogers *** 6'2" 230 lbs RUN STOPPER Allen, TX

Four recruits when offered a scholarship to attend New Mexico immediately committed this past weekend. The center prospect Kirk will be expected to redshirt and provide depth as starting center Farrell is only a sophomore. Massive TE Terrance Perry could eventually see himself at tackle if he doesn't improve his hands because of his outstanding size. However Coach Redfoot will start him at TE. Jackson is very undersized at 198 lbs but can lay the lumber. He could move to safety if his size becomes a problem but Coach Redfoot likes his speed and intensity. Finally Rogers rounds out the quick commits. Losing starting DE Latchison and Rainey this season New Mexico has put a focus on getting DEs the recruiting season. Rogers will have a chance to immediately compete for one of the vacant roles.
