People are welcome to post whenever they would like. I can't figure out how to embed the videos on this forum or it could possibly due to not having enough posts which is very understandable. Anyway, that is why all the youtube videos have links instead of being embedded. My plans are to have a season preview up within the next week or so, and then there probably will not be that many updates if any until the game is released.

Oregon State 2011 Season Preview

When we last left our heroes, the Oregon State Beavers hosted rival Oregon in a Civil War that would have national championship implications for Oregon, but a Beaver win would have also made Oregon State bowl eligible. It would also give Oregon State a chance to avenge the two previous losses to Oregon, each of which cost the Beavers the Rose Bowl. Duck fans would end up celebrating on the field at Reser Stadium as Oregon would head to the National Championship. While the Beavers would be sitting at home during the bowl season after finishing a disappointing 5-7.

It was definitely a disappointing season for Beaver Nation but keep in mind Oregon State played the most difficult schedule in the nation last year. Opening the season against TCU, playing at Boise State, and having to play against what became a very competitive Pac-10 against the likes of Stanford and Oregon. The Beavers played five teams that were ranked in the top ten at the time they played. Four of which ended the season ranked in the top ten.

If Oregon State is going to compete in the new Pac-12 North division, junior QB Ryan Katz is going to have to step up his game. Especially with all-everything HB Jacquizz Rodgers forgoing his senior year to enter the NFL Draft, Katz will need to fill the void for what is surely going be a less productive ground game. And if history is any judge, second year QBs under a Mike Riley offense grow by leaps and bounds. Derek Anderson, Matt Moore, and Sean Canfield all struggled in their first year under Mike Riley. But in each of their second seasons, the light bulb went off, and by the time these guys graduated, they were preparing for a career in the NFL. It is still too early to tell whether Katz will be able to achieve what those before him have accomplished, but Katz did show moments of brilliance. Though Katz also had his own struggles. Katz has one of the strongest arms in the country but does have a low release which leads to many tipped passes at the line. He also has the ability to make plays outside the pocket with both his arm or his legs. Unfortunately, Katz has not been able to stay healthy this offseason, missing the spring game due to a wrist injury on his right throwing arm. Though he should be ready for the start of the season. Katz has all of the tools to succeed if the Beavers can give him time to find his weapons.

Ryan Katz

The primary weapon in this offense is senior WR James Rodgers who was given a medical redshirt by the NCAA after a season-ending knee injury last year. With younger brother, Jacquizz gone, James will have to be the leader of the offense. Unfortunately, it is still unclear as to when Rodgers will be ready to play. The Beavers hope to get back their dynamic, versatile playmaker to help take some of the pressure off of Katz as his numbers dropped significantly when Rodgers was out last season. However, Rodgers is not the only weapon on this receiving corps. Junior WR Markus Wheaton is a threat to score with his speed, and could easily become an impact player by season's end. When healthy, the Beavers might have the most athletic duo at wideout in the conference. While junior WR Jordan Bishop is a great possession receiver, capable of making some spectacular highlight catches. Though Bishop is also battling an injury, a shoulder separation. Both James Rodgers and Jordan Bishop missed spring ball. Also, TE Joe Halahuni should be an important target for Katz in this offense if he can stay healthy. Currently, Halahuni is battling a shoulder injury that he had to recently have surgery on so it is unclear when he will be able to play . If this receiving group can stay healthy and that is a big if, this should be a position of strength for the Beavers.

James Rodgers

The biggest hole that needs to be filled is at tailback with Jacquizz Rodgers leaving early for the NFL Draft. It is easy to forget that Ryan McCants was rated the 10th best running back of his class by rivals and was expected to take over for Yvenson Bernard when he left. Unfortunately, McCants has battled injuries his entire career and was outshined by Quizz for obvious reasons. With Quizz now gone, McCants will now finally have his chance to be the starting tailback. Entering his senior year, it is now or never for McCants. Though it has been an open competition with junior Jordan Jenkins and redshirt sophomore Jovan Stevenson. McCants is more in the mold of a Steven Jackson, in that he has the size though he has yet to learn to run north and south. Mike Riley has hinted that he is willing to use a committee approach. The Beavers have been spoiled with workhorses such as Ken Simonton, Steven Jackson, Yvenson Bernard, and Jacquizz Rodgers that Riley has hitched his wagon to. The idea that Riley would consider using a committee system might imply that Oregon State does not have any running backs. With Jenkins recovering from a shoulder injury, look for this to be Ryan McCants' job to lose but do not be surprised to see Jenkins or Stevenson split some of the carries.

Ryan McCants

If Oregon State is going to have any success offensively, the offensive line is going to have to play much better. The Beavers will have four returning starters up front but unfortunately, these four were awful last year so it is difficult to know whether or not that is truly a good thing for OSU. On top of that, center Alex Linnenkohl who may make an NFL team as free agent, was the arguably the best of the starting five last year, and he is gone. But with offensive line assistant coach Mike Cavanaugh at the helm, there is always reason for optimism that things could be better up front for Oregon State this year. Riley and Cavanaugh have decided to stick with the same players, move them around. So far it looks like senior OT Mike Remmers and junior OT Michael Philipp will swap positions. Remmers, a former walk-on will move to LT while Philipp will move to RT. For Philipp, a former freshman All-American, this is a demotion after a dreadful 2010 season. Sophomore Josh Andrews is moving from center to LG while senior Grant Johnson is moving from LG to center. Senior Burke Ellis, also a former walk-on will remain RG, the only one to keep his position from last season. This group will not have Jacquizz Rodgers to save them from missing blocks so this front has to get better or it could be a long season for the Beavers.

On the defensive side, the Beavers lost Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year DT Stephen Paea who was a one man wrecking crew Oregon State. However, the Beavs also lost DE Gabe Miller and under appreciated DT Brennan Olander. All three combined for 114 tackles and 14 sacks last season. Oregon State gave up huge chunks of yardage at a time last season but still managed to finish 4th in the conference and 24th nationally in the sacks with 2.5 per game. With all that being said, this was not particularly a very good defensive front nor was it a very good defense even with a stud like Paea. The Beavers were near the bottom in nearly every defensive category except for sacks and tackle for loss. Going into the 2011 season, it is completely up in the air as to who will start on this defensive line. Mike Riley insists that OSU is adequate up front and the Beavers have a lot of potential at DE but this is really "cross your fingers and hope for the best." It looks like junior Taylor Henry has bulked up and should be an all around defensive end, but has explosiveness around the edge to become a pass rush specialist. Dominic Glover should be in the mix but reshirt freshman DE Scott Crichton has come on strong but still is inexperienced. While junior DE Rusty Fernando has been almost unblockable pass rushing the QB, but may struggle stopping the run. DT Castro Masaniai (6-2, 341) should try to fill the gap up front left by Paea. But senior DT Kevin Frahm is the leader up front. While freshman DT Fred Thompson and senior Ben Motter have both looked impressive. There is a lot of potential here but not a whole lot of experience.

Mike Riley in the past has liked to refer to OSU as "Linebacker-U of the West" but that has not really been true in recent years. The Beavers lost OLBs Dwight Roberson and Keith Pankey to graduation who were both very productive in a down year defensively. Taking their places will be senior OLB Cameron Collins, who converted from safety and came on strong last season. Collins has sideline to sideline speed which is something the Beavers missed last year. At 6-2, 240 with 4.5 speed, Collins could potentially be playing on Sundays. In fact, speed at OLB should be a noticeable difference this year compared to last year. Sophomore OLB Michael Doctor now has a season under his belt and is also lightning quick. Collins and Doctor should actually be upgrades over the starting seniors from last year. The speed on the outside can hopefully prevent those QB scrambles that killed the Beavs last year. Unfortunately, the MLB position, arguably the most important position of the entire defense is still anybody's guess. It is up for grabs likely between juniors Feti Unga, Tony Wilson, and Rueben Robinson. It appears that each is plenty athletic to play but nobody has seemed to figured out the mental side of the MLB position.

Cameron Collins

The Beavers will have three quality returning starters on the secondary. However, OSU did lose CB James Dockery and S Suaesi Tuimaunei and last year's secondary struggled at times, finishing near the bottom of the conference in pass defense. Neither CBs Brandon Hardin nor Jordan Poyer have shut-down corner abilities. Senior Brandon Hardin who struggled in pass coverage at times last year has lost weight, can no longer be moved to safety or LB and appears to be one of the starting corners. It looks like junior Jordan Poyer will be opposite him. Poyer also plays baseball and is an excellent kick returner could go down as one of OSU's all-time athletes. He racked up 1,109 all-purpose yards last season and was 2nd in the Pac-10 with kickoff return yards per attempt with (27.8). Given the unknown situation with James Rodgers, Poyer could prove even more valuable in special teams. The leader of the secondary is senior S Lance Mitchell who could seriously be considered one of the best safeties in the nation by season's end. The other saftey position is up for grabs between juniors Josh LaGrone and Anthony Watkins.

Lance Mitchell

This defense could surprise many and by now it should be obvious that they could be much better by midseason as that seems to Mike Riley's pattern. Overall, this defense will be much more athletic but is very inexperienced.

Re: Let it Rage: An Oregon State Dynasty

That picture of Mitchell is ridiculously awesome (great number too!) - but I like the write up and the schedule looks interesting.

Looking forward to McCants having his time to shine -cross finger for no injuries this year.

When I first saw that picture of Mitchell on google I thought it was a painting because it looked so freakin' awesome. It's funny that you mention the injuries. OSU actually booted their old trainer and hired a new one because of all the nagging injuries over the last few seasons. Hopefully, the move will keep more players on the field. Of course, I've never been hurt too badly by injuries by EA on the NCAA series but you never know. *knocks on wood*
