A big match up on opening weekend see's Boise State travel to East Lansing to face the Michigan State Spartans. Obviously for years its said that Boise cant play with the big boys but wins against Virginia Tech two years ago and Georgia a year ago makes Boise a favorite on the road. However they will have to do it without Hughes at quarterback. Boise's all time passer graduated after a wonderful 13-0 season that saw Boise win the sugar bowl. Michigan State has a lot in favor for this game. They've won their last 14 at home and they bring in Preseason All American running back Marques Green. Should be a very very good football game. Here are other games that will kickoff the weekend.

Ohio AT #3 Oregon
Ohio lost only one game last year but this year come into the season with a whole new coaching staff after Solich retired. Ohio has a chance to be the next Boise with a win here.

ECU AT #2 South Carolina
SC will have to prove to the nation that their national title run was not a fluke. A statement is a must against a good ECU team.

MIAMI (OH) @ MARSHALL
TULSA @ IOWA STATE
NORTHWESTERN @ MEMPHIS
UCLA @ COLORADO
EASTERN MICHIGAN @ FLORIDA
CENTRAL MICHIGAN @ BOWLING GREEN

We'll see you next week as the rest of the nation kicks off, for now im Erik Kuselias saying good bye.

WK 1 @AUBURN
BLAZER WEEKLY

A FRESH START
Blazers travel to Auburn for battle

Coach Rhatigan talked to the media about the Blazers first game.

OPENING STATEMENT: You can tell it's game week. We got up at 5:45 for flex this morning. We took the field at 5:45, so the guys were up at four in most cases. We do that for a lot of reasons. It separates some time that they practice today from tomorrow. It's like a day and a half now because we'll practice tomorrow afternoon. A lot of the guys have Monday afternoon classes and labs, so it makes it more difficult. We always practice Monday morning right after an open date.

The first game is a lot of fun. The guys here, they've been working really hard against each other. Our best and most experienced players are working against the most experienced players for the last three weeks. You really don't know how good you are. One of your guys loses every time and one of your guys wins. You walk off the field mad every day. Now it's time to go put your show on against somebody else. We'll find out a lot on Saturday starting at 12:30. This time of the year there's a lot of hopes and dreams for everybody. Everyone's undefeated. Most people are really healthy. You're probably as healthy as you'll be throughout the year this week and this ballgame. Everybody is feeling pretty good about their team. All coaches and players are anxious.

Opening games are usually determined by turnovers and kicking game mistakes. You haven't done those things live for quite a while. You scrimmage some, but you still can't get the intensity in some ways that you do when you're playing against someone else. It's much more difficult to go on the road and take your kids. You have guys that have never flown before - this will be a bus trip for us however. You've got guys that haven't stayed in a hotel. They don't know what pregame is like. They've never been in front of a crowd like this and national TV. A lot of young guys are having different feelings and emotions this week.

Auburn is a very good football team, coach Chizik has turned them into a national powerhouse in his short years there. Not only do we battle a great team but we battle a tough crowd. Jordan Hare will give these kids goosebumbs. Hopefully they take it all in like they did at Florida last year and play the game they know how to play.

I'm personally very confident about this team and what they can become. The question will be their chemistry, their motto, "Every play, every day." Are they going to do that. All of us can sit here and look at all the pieces. All of the pieces are there. The experience isn't there in certain aspects but we return a lot of guys, which we're not as concerned about. They can really run, but they can't play with complacency. They have to be excited every time they go out there. This is not a team that can win if we're not ready to play. We'll know that on Saturday. We'll see. I'm waiting to see. This team has responded to everything very well. Will they respond on Saturday to be excited about the game? Then the seventh and eighth and ninth and the tenth game when it gets like a professional schedule, will they still be playing with the same enthusiasm?

On Wayne Smith's first start at quarterback: This is the first fair start for him, too. It's been his team since spring practice. He's worked very hard to make good decisions and drop the ball off and lead his team. He's got a lot on his plate right now. I'm sure his head will be spinning some by Saturday. I think it's a good challenge for this team to go on the road and have to play an opener out of their comfort zone for the first time. I'm excited about watching him play.

On what he will tell Wayne Smith before the game: be yourself. Don't do anything else but be yourself. Yourself is good enough. That's what we will tell him. You have waited on this your whole life. He's going to have some problems, but the way you overcome your problems is the way you win.

On the importance of Wayne being successful: Win. That's all that matters. We can get into all those stats and all those other things but if you win the game, then you can move on to game two and that's it. If you lose the game then you take a huge step back, then you're all over the place, starting over and trying to find out what is wrong. But if you win, the natural progression is that a good team gets much better by the end of the year and early games usually aren't pretty.

Game Notes
In what should be the start of a heated in state rivalry game Auburn gets the luxery of having this one at home to start the season. Auburns three headed attack on offense is led by their quarterback Josh Mitchell who passed for 3,000 yards a season ago and 26 touchdowns. He is a bit inconsistant throwing 14 interceptions. But thats where the other two heads come in. Junior Travis Jones and Senior Cory Moore spear head this attack on the ground. Jones rushed for 951 yards while Moore grabbed 875. These two backs could cause real problems for this UAB defense. Defensively linebacker Rian Atkins may very well be the best player on the field, coming off a strong junior campaign UAB will have to account for him at all times.

UAB comes into this game to prove a point in a win or loss they want the nation to see that they are no slouch. Quarterback Wayne Smith gets the reigns to start the season and he has two top target in James Moses and Ian Wilson. Both 1,000 yard receivers who can stretch the field. They'll need to keep Auburns fast defense honest tho and that will take a good performance from Sophomore running back Matthew Scott. On the defensive side of the ball Tom Slaughter will look to stop these shifty backs from Auburn. Defensive Tackle Brandon Richardson will be key to get the line off of Slaughter as well as generate some double teams so end Jerry Bowser can get a rush.

Prediction: UAB is a year or two away from being a favorite in this game, but with all the hoopla of Jordan Hare and Auburn on National Television it may be overwhelming. Auburn wins this 35-17

gettin geared up for the new season, this could be a big year after only a one-loss season. Team looks like they should be improved, and hopefully will lead to a better recruiting class.

Very happy to see BSU pull of the big win over MSU. Hopefully I can repeat that performance in Season 2 for me.

Looks like Week 2 offers a bigtime Top-25 matchup with Nevada as well. A win against them and BSU might have a chance to climb up into the Top-5

BUILDING MOMENTUM
UAB HOLDS OFF AUBURN IN DRAMATIC FASHION
WINNING 28-27

(SCOTT FIGHTS THROUGH TACKLES DURING THIS TOUCHDOWN)
_____________________
ASSOCIATED PRESS

AUBURN HILLS, AL--- A late Auburn rally overshadowed a dominated game by UAB. Matthew Scott rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns as the Blazers held off the Tigers.
"This is huge for our school and it builds momentum for the season." An ecstatic Tom Slaughter said heading into the locker room, he would finish with 8 tackles and a sack. With much anticipation and build up to the game it was perceived Auburn had the upper hand with the #10 ranking two of the best running backs in the country. But UAB has a fine back themselves and we may have witnessed sophomore running back Matthew Scott's coming out party.
It didnt take long for Scott to get the 70+ thousand on hand to silence out when he ripped off a 46 yard touchdown run on the games third play.
"That kid is gonna be special for us, Smith struggled a bit on the pass game so it was good to see Scott have this type of day."

(THIS 46 YARD TOUCHDOWN RUN SET THE TONE EARLY FOR UAB)
UAB would go up 14-3 with a 12 yard touchdown run from Scott giving him his second of the game, then it seemed as if Auburn's offense would settle down. Playing it safe on 3rd and 13 after UAB linebacker Tom Slaughter crushed Auburn quarterback S. Mitchell, the tigers ran a draw but sensational running back Travis Jones side stepped one defender and bolted for a 63 yard score erupting the crowd and putting the Tigers closer at 14-10. For the most part Blazer quarterback Wayne Smith struggled going 12-28 and throwing two interceptions but he would drive the Blazers down the field with a mixture of passes and runs from Scott that would lead to his 5 yard touchdown pass to Ralph Rawls and UAB went into the half up 21-13.

"Heading into the half down a score, and getting the ball coming out I felt we still had control of the game." Auburn Coach Gene Chizic stated.
But Auburn had no answer as to how to punch the ball in. They would settle for 3 points after a controversial third down stop at the one yard line that saw linebackers Tom Slaughter and Timi McCollum stop Auburn fullback in his tracks but replays showed forward progress in the end zone that refs didnt acknowledge forcing Auburn to kick the field goal.

(THIS PIVATOL PLAY BY SLAUGHTER AND MCCOLLUM FORCED AUBURN TO ANOTHER RED ZONE FIELD GOAL)
The score was 21-16 when a huge momentum shift occured as Smith threw his first of two interceptions on the day in their own territory, but UAB's pressured proved to be two much when (RS) freshmen defensive tackle Leak sacked Mitchell forcing another field goal.
Up 21-19 UAB had a chance to put the game away driving all the way into the red zone Smith made another mistake throwing a floater to the sideline Linebacker Rian Atkins picked the pass off and looked to return it before getting pushed out of bounds . Travis Jones would do magic and give Auburn their first lead of the game, with three minutes left facing a 4th and 3, a missed tackled saw Jones go straight up the middle scoring from 54 yards out, a two point conversion put Auburn up for the first time 27-21.

(A GUTSY 4TH AND 3 CALL FOR AUBURN TURNED INTO A 54 YARD TOUCHDOWN GIVING THE TIGERS THEIR FIRST LEAD OF THE AFTERNOON BY JONES.

Just under three minutes remained, but UAB had no thought of abandoning the run game. Auburn gearing for the pass got big doses of Scott and getting into Auburn territory. Thats when Smith dialed up 39 yard touchdown pass to Rawls (his second) and giving UAB a 28-27 lead.
"It was a great call by our staff, they gave me two plays and told me to check to the best one, I checked and Rawls saw what I saw and we got the score." words from quarterback Wayne Smith.

(RAWLS SNAGGED HIS 2ND TOUCHDOWN RECEPTION OF THE AFTERNOON, THIS BEING THE BIGGEST GIVING UAB A ONE POINT LEAD.)

Auburn still had time and a very good field goal kicker in John Duncan who was 4-4 and nailed a 51 yarder earlier in the game.
"I decided to not sit in zone and give him a chance to take his time, so we came after him." Mentioned Blazer head coach Travis Rhatigan.
It paid off, Mitchell only threw the football twelve times to that point a first down sack by Jerry Bowser pursued a second down sack by Kareem Kirby and on third down free safety Mark Parrish made the play of the game with his one handed interception. Scott and UAB would grabbed two first downs to run the clock out and grab the huge win.
" Our defense put pressure on him all day, and when he threw that last pass up I knew it was mine." said Parrish.
UAB's defense was spectacular holding Auburn to 2-12 on third downs, Auburn only grabbed 8 first downs the whole game. Key stats for this Blazer defense would the fact that they held Auburn to three field goals in the red zone.
