After playing Auburn, Im loving my tailback, Im hoping he doesnt get hurt, My defense gave up two big runs but for the most part theyre solid... Im uneasy about my pass game Smith is athletic and can escape pressure but his accuracy is suspect

Yea the MWC is gonna be tough, Boise may have a loss or two, stat wise it looked like their tailback carried them in the MSU game

Photobucket
Jesse what does this loss mean for Auburn who was considered to be able to give LSU, and Bama a run for the west title this season.
JP---- It means a lot I would think, you lose your home opener to a new up and coming in state rival. You have #6 LSU coming to town in a few weeks and you travel to #19 UNC where they seem to have figured it out. Auburn will need to dissect this film and see what went wrong. They had no answer for UAB's rushing attack and they need to figure out their offensive line issue. Jones is a great back but if all they have is him it could very well be a long season for Gene Chizic'x Auburn Tigers.
Thanks Jesse for your insight.

This week's National Players of the week go to Penn State's freshmen Alex Barnes. Barnes grabbed a school record 15 receptions and 241 yards with 4 touchdown catches in their 42-14 win over Navy, the top athlete coming out a year ago has started a very promising college career. Defensively the award goes to Maryland OLB Keith Pope, the senior recorded 14 tackles forced a fumble recovered a fumble and notched a sack in their upset win over West Virginia.

Here is the top 25, some new faces enter while tough losses rearrange the poll.

Head Coach Travis Rhatigan met with the media Tuesday to discuss his win over Auburn and the upcoming home opener against Troy.

Opening statement: It was an exciting game like a in state Rivalry should be. You go back and look at big games in college football each week and now with College GameDay and all of the hype, a lot of times the hype's better than the game. This game lived up to all the expectations. It was a great football game between two really good, I thought well-coached football teams, but good football teams and talented football teams. Both teams played so hard and probably the most impressive thing is that when one team would go ahead, the other would answer and it would come right back and answer again and again and again. That's what made the game one of the best I've been involved with. It was also fun that it was the largest crowd my kids played in front of since going to Florida a season ago and something that these kids can remember from both teams for a long time. I thought the crowd was louder because of the extra seats and the setting was what everybody wanted it to be, and it was fun to have all of our NFL guys back. There were so many of them that were back, some of them currently playing that were open and some guys that are between teams or not playing any longer. We had a pretty good looking bunch on that sideline. Once again, I thought the game lived up to the hype, both teams played really hard, played well, it was a physical game and one that people will remember for a long time.

Offensively, the two players that were most productive- Matthew Scott and Ralph Rawls. Those guys played well, Rawls caught the ball, Scott made play with the run and we're really, really proud of their performance. Best Contributor was Wayne Smith. Under pressure in the 4th quarter and he delivered. James Moses had the best play of the game, the catch setting up Scott's second score was tremendous. Offensively, the good things were we kept answering and that's something a good team has to do. This game, because of the split crowd we think, has more momentum shifts than any we coach in. It's just been amazing and the players feel the same way. To win this ballgame you're going to have to take momentum and turn it back because it'll be against you some. They finished. The offensive kids finished plays, they finished drives and they finished the game because when you're down there with two minutes left and you're sitting in a position where you've got to make a couple of first downs and get the ball on the other end of the field, they did it.

Defensively, we were able to force pressure and grab sacks, the goaline tackle by Slaughter and our true freshmen McCollum was huge. The good thing is that we felt like to win a game like this and go back and see so many things we can correct on both sides of the ball will really help us get prepared for this week. Secondly, probably three of the five big plays are plays that we had some mistakes and that we can correct.
Players of the game, defensively was Mark Parrish and it was obvious he played at such a high level, and the other two were Tom Slaughter and Jerry Bowser.

Now its on to Troy, Troy looks good on film and just got passed BC. The Green kid at receiver looks like good athlete and they try to feed him the ball. Its our home opener and with a good crowd that should take care of half the battle, the other half should be us feeling like this team shouldn't belong on the field with us. It's safe for us to say that but we have to back it up.

On handling being ranked this early in the season: I really think our guys aren't impressed by it right now. A couple of them when I put it up said `Oh, that's pretty cool.' It was not a scream and a shout, five years ago it might have been for us. I think all these seniors know from being on bad teams that hard work pays off. All we did Saturday was give ourselves a chance to control our own destiny for the rest of the season, that's all we did. Other than that, we've got to go back to work

Game Notes
If last year has anything to do with it, then Troy will be amped for this one. UAB blasted Troy 45-7 in Troy last year. UAB did it in a nonchalant cocky fashion.
Matthew Scott rushed for 70 yards and a score, Ian Wilson scorched the secondary for a 68 yard score. UAB grabbed three interceptions. There is a lot of motivation for this Troy team, oh and they can knock UAB from the top 25 rankings.
Troy comes in having squeaked by BC 25-20. Junior quarterback Mike Moore, who played in last years contest completed 22 passes last week, 19 went to Jarvis Green who hauled in 223 yards and two touchdowns. He'll need a big day for Troy to have a chance.
UAB comes in off a huge emotionally charge win over Auburn, now it their home opener and and they seem ready to go. Earlier in the week linebacker Tom Slaughter compared Troy to the little brother of the in state schools and feels they should have no problem getting past them. Led by Slaughter and complany the Blazers should have a field day piling on the pressure. Offensively Wayne Smith will try and use this game to get in better rhythm with his pass catchers, if that fails expect Matthew Scott to have a huge day.

Prediction: UAB rolls in this one 45-10

BLAZER WEEKLY

RECRUITING SPECIAL
BLAZERS GET TWO 3 STAR COMMITMENTS THIS WEEK
Photobucket--Photobucket

UAB got news of two in state recruits sending verbal commitments to the school. Corner Back Darron Franklin and Guard Craig McFadden, both three stars were ecstatic to commit. Franklin, who ranks as the states fifth best corner and 33 player overall chose UAB over Tennessee and North Carolina.
"I just love how coach Rhatigan coaches, he makes you better and I want to be apart of that, plus its close to home." Stated Franklin who is from Hokes Bluff, Alabama.
McFadden who hails from Pelham, Alabama is ranked as the states fourth best offensive linemen. He is in Alabama super top 25 and chose UAB over Clemson and Vanderbilt.
"I love their style offensively, after watching the game last week against Auburn, you saw they really let their O-line get after it. Im excited about the possibility of playing there."
Coach Rhatigan invited the two commits to a press box viewing of this weekends game against Troy. He had this to say about his new Blazers.
"Franklin and McFadden will definitely help us out whether they can come in and start or add depth. Individually we been following Franklin since his Junior year and he came to our summer camp and ran a 4.42 40. He also had great ball skills and we quickly offered him. McFadden is a big athletic guy who will be able to come in at guard or center for us. We're excited about how recruiting this year and expect a few more in state kids to jump aboard."

BLAZERS HANG ON
LATE GAME PUSH HELPS UAB PROPEL
PAST TROY 50-31

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA--UAB made rare mistakes. The Blazer defense got pushed around and the Blazers watched their big lead and momentum gradually disappear. Suddenly, the No. 21 team in the country looked vulnerable.
Yet here they are, still unbeaten, and with still more tough games to play.
Smith passed for 372 yards and three touchdowns Saturday but the Blazer defense needed to come up with two huge stands in the fourth quarter before UAB pulled away for the 50-31 win over Troy (1-1).

"We're not going to beat everybody by 50 or 60," UAB Freshmen cornerback Adam Love said. "We showed we can dig down and fight."
UAB led 27-17 when Smith got sacked then fumbled on what seemed to be a throwing motion - and the Trojans seemed to have stolen all the momentum with the ball near midfield.
Troy quarterback Mike Moore who for the most part was flawless all afternoon then drove Troy down the field on a four play 52 yard drive that ended in a 11 yard touchdown pass to Charles and just like that in the third quarter Troy was down 3 points and making a run.
--
(UAB HAD NO ANSWER FOR ONE OF THE NATIONS BEST RECEIVERS IN GREEN #85... ALL OF TROY RECEIVERS HAD SUCCESS AGAINST THIS SECONDARY.)

The stunned crowd of 54,445 then saw return man Roderick Brooks miss play the kickoff and Troy recovered at the 22 yard line, two plays later Troy grabbed the lead with a 7 yard touchdown pass from Moore to Pierce and just like that Troy was up 31-27 late in the third.

"No one plays this game perfect," said wide receiver Ralph Rawls, Brook's roommate. A three and out drew boo's from a crowd who just a quarter ago was rocking when defensive tackle Brandon Richardson return a fumble 37 yards giving UAB a 27-14 lead just before the half. A Booming punt by Miller saw UAB down it at the two yard line and thats where the magic started heading into the fourth quarter. Trying to by some room Troy , who had passed 90% of the time tried a simple option that back fired when All American defensive end Jerry Bowser with no hesitation blew up Moore for a safety.

"It was time to make a play, I saw a opportunity and took it, I usually have pitch man so it was a no brainer," UAB defensive end Jerry Bowser said.

Down two 31-29 and getting the ball back, tailback Matthew Scott took a hand off and cut back against the flow to nothing but daylight and raced 72 yards making the crowd erupt as the Blazers took back the lead for good going up 36-31 early in the fourth quarter. Scott would finish with 148 yards and two touchdowns.

(THIS SAFETY SWUNG MOMENTUM BACK TO UAB... MATTHEW SCOTT'S 72 YARD SCORE GAVE UAB THE LEAD FOR GOOD)

"I said, 'Boys we got us a fight. You better hang on,'"

Travis Rhatigan

Saturday's slugfest with Troy sets up yet another big game next Saturday night when Georgia comes to town.

"Our reward is Georgia team who loss to the #2 team in country in overtime (South Carolina)," Blazers coach Travis Rhatigan said. "We've still got some work to do."
Under Rhatigan UAB has now won two straight over in state rival. It was added in his contract that he gets bonuses for beating rivals.
"We kind of let them off the hook," said Troy quarterback Mike Moore, his hands still shaking after the game. "We had them where we wanted them all game, and we were just a few plays short." Moore the games overall MVP threw for 446 yards and 4 touchdowns. But down 36-31 he threw a crucial interception to corner Adam Love. The Turnover resulted in Wayne Smith finding James Moses for his third touchdown pass of the game.
"The place erupted, jumping up by the fans and just seeing the sheer excitement in their face was awesome, they never got quiet after that." UAB receiver James Moses. The defense closed the game out when middle linebacker knocked Moore out the rest of the fourth quarter with a huge sack and Scott would add the finishing touches with a 12 yard touchdown run making the score 50-21.
The Troy's playmakers came to play tho. Receiver Jarvis Green who had 223 yards a week ago receiving hauled in 147 yards including a early 67 yard touchdown grab.
"He's definitely a player, we'll watch this film correct our mistakes and get ready for Georgia." Travis Rhatigan
