BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA--- Sophomore running back Matthew Scott is producing one of the best rushing performances this season in UAB football history as the No. 11 Blazers sprinted past Marshall University, 59-15 at Legion Field Saturday afternoon.
. Playing in front of 51,015 fans for Senior Day and an ESPN 2 national audience, Scott became the first Blazer to rush for four touchdowns in a game. In fact, the sophomore from Fairhope, Al., just needs 28 yards to grab the school record for yards in a season he currently has 1,399 yards on the year.
Scott finished the night with 185 yards on 21 carries (8.8 yards per carry).
"The kid is a beast right now, and he is carrying this team on his back" Senior Quarterback Wayne Smith said.
Smith also had a stellar game throwing four touchdown passes. He was just 13 of 30 but combined to throw for 375 yards and no interception.
The Thunderin Herd , who fell to 1-8 overall, could not match UAB's offensive intensity, as the Blazers improved to 9-0 by winning its home finale.
" It was good to go out with a dominating victory to close out our careers here at home." An emotionally James Moses said, he grabbed two touchdown reception on the afternoon..
.The dominance of the young running back set up his fellow Blazers for big plays as the game progressed. Before Scott even touched the ball Smith hit Michael Ross down the sideline for a 43 yard score erupting the crowd as his teammates stormed to the end zone after him in jubilee. On UAB's next play from scrimmage Smith handed off to Scott who then exploded for a 51-yard touchdown run, chants of Heisman could be heard echoing throughout the stadium as the replay of his run came across the jumbotron. Smith then led a two minute drive that took just three plays culminating with a 73 yard catch and run to Freshmen Matt Ford putting the Blazers up 21-7 at the half.
"Thats what we needed, this could have easily been one of those trap games but the leaders on this team didnt let it happen and they executed the gameplan in the first half well." Said a fired up head coach Travis Rhatigan. "I'm proud of the intensity they brought, with this team the sky is the limit."
Marshall tried to hang with the Blazers in the third quarter but UAB's defensive line provided a lot of pressure getting to Marshall's Holt three times in that quarter, a Tom Slaughter who grabbed 8 tackles and half a sack came screaming on a blitz and hit Holt causing him to over throw his intended receiver and cornerback B. Wyatt picked the ball off setting up Scott's second scoring run to end the third quarter. .
The Blazers weren't done to start the fourth quarter as Scott chewed up this Marshall defense, a third and one play fake to Scott froze the Marshall secondary and Wayne Smith connected with fellow senior James Moses who split coverage making the fantastic leaping catch in the end zone..

If the long runs giving Scott two more scores or quick passes didn't deliver the knockout blows to the Herd hopes, the long pass play to Moses on the next series did as he Hauled in a 71 yard beauty putting the Blazers up 59-15 a excited Wayne Smith embraced the crowd jumping up as if he won the championship.
"Im grateful to be in this situtation right now, I had to come in and replace Andre Sharpe which was no easy task."Mentioned UAB quarterback Wayne Smith."I stayed focused and just had fun with my teammates, glad to go out on top in our final home game."
UAB rolled to 572 yards of total offense. With so much offense the Blazers performance on defense was somewhat over looked. Led by 11 tackle performances by safeties Eugene Jackson and Mark Parrish both seniors, this unit quietly suffocated the Marshall offensive attack. The Blazers #1 rush defense was back at it again holding the herd rush attack to 49 yards on 27 attempts. Defensive tackle Brandon Richardson grabbed two sacks, Jerry Bowser and Kareem Kirby notched sacks as well.

" The Blazers grabbed five sacks on the afternoon including crunching blows from Kirby and Richardson"
"We couldn't muster anything up, they brought tremendous pressure all afternoon." a worn out Marshall quarterback stated after the game. Free safety Mark Parrish capped the game off in the fourth quarter grabbing UAB's fourth takeaway with his 7th interception of the season. The Blazers forced two fumbles both by Linebacker Tom Slaughter and two interceptions. All four turnovers resulted in scores for the Blazers.
"Im speechless on our defensive effort, these guys understand what we want and played out there mind today, getting four more take aways for us." Head coach Travis Rhatigan said.
--
" The opportunistic Blazers once again led in the turnover battle forcing fumbles and interceptions"
Next for the Blazers is the first of a three game season ending road trip starting with Southern Miss next week.
