HOSTED BY: ERIK KUSELIAS

What a weekend of Football, contenders are starting to rise above the rest, I'm Erik Kuselias and this is College Football Live. Three top 10 teams fell on a wild weekend, Lets get to the headlines.

WHEN IT COUNTS:
  • TCU stays perfect with a huge road win over Rutgers 42-24
  • In a wild game, Iowa nearly comes back down three scores in the fourth quarter but falls short to Michigan earning their first loss of the year
  • OU wins a hard fought game against A&M winning 17-10
  • Duke bounces back with huge 38-31 win over Canes
  • #1 LSU bounces Tide out of Death Valley 34-24
  • #2 Arkansas continues to surprise with 45-17 win over GameCocks.
Mark May's Thoughts!

The University of Alabama, whoa, wait a minute. I mean the University of Alabama at Birmingham is the hottest team in the country right now. Now some of you may say Mark what about #1 LSU or #2 Arkansas, hell even #6 Nevada looks to be hot right now but UAB is clicking on all cylinders.
Photobucket
(HEAD COACH TRAVIS RHATIGAN AND QUARTERBACK WAYNE SMITH)

They have the hottest coach in College Football right now in Travis Rhatigan, a young fiery coach who seems to get the most out of his players. They have a quarterback in Wayne Smith who is a good decision maker, and lets not forget the nations leader rushing in the back field, add a top 10 defense and you got a 10-0 team. You may wonder why they're ranked so high at #7, They went on the road and beat Auburn and Virginia Tech and UCF all top 25 teams. Keep an eye on the Blazers with more and more media attention the nation will get to see a very good athletic team as the Bowl races heat up.

Thanks Mark, yes UAB seems to be on a roll, one of the hottest non qualifers on the map right now. Here is this weeks, National Players of the week.
Freshmen receiver Matt Ford for UAB hauled in 235 yards and 3 touchdowns in a blowout win against Southern Miss. Maryland defensive end Mario Ridgeway recorded 10 tackles and three sacks in a loss to Virginia.

We had a shake up in the BCS and as the season nears the end the pretenders are coming out and dropping out. Iowa and South Carolina all dropped out the top 10. the top seven teams are all undefeated and Arkansas bunny hopped Oregon for #2. This years BCS controversy goes to the Fresno State Bulldogs who are 8-0 are ranked 16th in the poll. Here are this weeks BCS Standings.
  1. LSU 10-0
  2. ARKANSAS 9-0
  3. OREGON 9-0
  4. UTAH 9-0
  5. TCU 9-0
  6. NEVADA 9-0
  7. UAB 10-0
  8. WISCONSIN 8-1
  9. VIRGINIA TECH 8-1
  10. ALABAMA 7-2
Like I said definitely a wild weekend of football, lets see whats on tap for the upcoming weekend.

#17 Baylor (7-1) at #14 Oklahoma (7-2)
This one is basically for the Big 12 title, OU is 6-0 in the conference and Baylor is 4-1. Baylor is playing big time football right now, but will need to go into a tough environment.

#6 Nevada (9-0) at Michigan State (3-6)
Record wise Michigan State looks to not have a chance, but for Nevada this could be a tough game game late in the season on the road in cold weather environment. Nevada could prove a lot with a win.

#23 Georgia Tech (7-2) at #9 Virginia Tech (8-1)
The yellow jackets turned their season around with a huge win over Duke a few weeks ago, But since a home loss to UAB VTech has been lights out, college gameday with be here as well, should be a good one.

Thats it for this show, we'll see you next week

BLAZER WEEKLY

WE CANT HEAR YOU!!
BLAZERS TRY TO STAY FOCUSED DURING BCS RUN
Photobucket
When Talking to UAB players you'll get the same answer when asking about their BCS chances.
"We're just taking one game at a time."
SR DE Jerry Bowser
Blazers earned their highest ranking in school history this week after jumping up to #7 in the BCS polls. With just two games left before the conference championship UAB is just taking it one game at a time.
"Its important to focus at the task at hand, looking to far ahead can be a big distraction. Now with the media at every practice and in some cases following players to class and wanting a interview every second we have to understand that their here because of what we're doing on the field and we need to keep doing that one week at a time"
HC Travis Rhatigan
Freshmen Receiver Matt Ford matt the "hush" signal after a score in last weekends game that saw coach Travis Rhatigan chew him out on the sideline.
"We definitely want to hush the nay sayers but there is a way you do that and its not by taunting a team that your beating by 30, so I let him know we dont do that here."
HC Travis Rhatigan
Nevertheless the Blazers are quieting their critics as they look like a real contender down the stretch.

RECRUITING NEWS
The Blazers got great news this week grabbing their fourth recruit, this time Three Star Quarterback Adam ****s a 6'4, 201 pound pocket passer from Coral Springs Florida. Adam had this to say after committing " It was a no Brainer for me, if you look at the success of the quarterbacks under Rhatigan (Andre Sharpe, Wayne Smith) and then the fact that I'll get to come in and compete for the job next year for one of the up and coming programs I saw this as a great opportunity."

Coach Rhatigan Spoke to the media about last weeks win and next weeks game vs SMU.

Opening Statement: Another dominating first half for us. We jumped on them and made them feel like they couldn't do much. Did a great job in that environment, the crowd was tough and rowdy but our guys came to play. As a staff we're very excited about the play of Matt Ford, the guy is a gamer, a deep threat to the truest sense and has made big plays for us all year in a quiet manor.
I was upset at our execution in the second half, although we ran the majority of the half to only score three points after putting up 49 in the first half had me a bit nervous. Give them credit for finishing the game strong strong. We need to work on tackling a bit more this week, we had some misses resulting long touchdowns. We cant do that against SMU. They have been very competitive this year. They have won three straight games now and look like a very confident and motivated group. I'm not gonna answer any BCS questions until we're actually in a BCS bowl, right now as Ive been saying since the season started we're taking things one game at a time.

National Offensive Player of the week
Congrats to Freshmen Matt Ford for being named offensive player of the week. Ford hauled in 5 receptions for 235 yards and three touchdowns.

Game Notes
SMU has won three games in row and look to be in favor of an upset with a 5-4 record and a 4-1 conference record, SMU can still make it to the conference championship game, but a injury to starting quarterback Antwan Smith may hurt this team. True Freshmen Ed Henry will get the start against the Nations #9 ranked defense. Henry will have to worry about eluding this fast pressuring defense and still try to avoid throwing into turnovers. This UAB defense is #1 in sacks and interceptions. The team as a whole is +13 in turnover differential. Henry will need help from receivers Claude Brink (644) and Kevin London (510) They possess the speed to try and separate from this man heavy defense they will be the key to helping SMU having a chance at the upset.
SMU's defense also knows how to get pressure as they rank #5 in the country in total sacks. Senior Linebacker Jeremy Brown brinks in 75 tackles and 4.5 sacks he will need to anchor this defense in stopping the nations leading rusher in Matthew Scott (1,500) exerting to much energy there however will open up a fantastic pass attack led by Wayne Smith and four receivers who can all go the distance in a given play. Ian Wilson leads the receiving core (845) but Moses, Ross and Ford can all go.
Prediction-- UAB has to much fire power, add that with a true freshmen at quarterback and it could be a long day for SMU. UAB wins 35-10

DEFENSE COMES THROUGH
KEY FOURTH QUARTER STOPS PROPEL UAB PAST SMU 31-21

"DEFENSIVE BACK BRYAN WYATT SEALS SMU'S FATE WITH THIS FORCED FUMBLE"

______________________
ASSOCIATED PRESS

DALLAS, TEXAS---
With the strip of the ball a big sigh of relief was let out, and No. 7 UAB got through the second half without Heisman front runner Matthew Scott. It wasn't easy. Without the nation's leading rusher, the attack that came in No. 3 nationally in total offense and No. 1 in scoring wheezed and sputtered much of the day, particularly in a 17-7 first half. But backup Roderick Brooks ran in a 41 yard touchdown putting the game out of reach and helping the turnover-plagued Blazers (11-0 overall, 7-0) beat the Mustangs 31-21 on Saturday and stay on course for what could become a banner year.
"Scott is a great player," said Rhatigan. "But we can win without one guy. We said that all along, we can fill that void. The guys did fill that void today. I was happy with the way the rest of the guys stepped up in his absence during that second half."

In case your wondering, the NCAA's leading rusher who up until the middle of the third quarter had 142 yards on 11 carries including a 98 yard touchdown run, on a third and one was tackled from the side hard and dislocated his elbow causing him to miss the rest of the game and perhaps the rest of the season.

"Thats tough to see that."
Free Safety Matt Parrish said, "He was having a great year, and is one of the reason we've been so successful."

Punter A. Miller kept pinning SMU and freshmen quarter Ed Henry deep in their territory and forcing him to drive the length of the field.

Blazers quarterback Wayne Smith was 13 for 29 for 272 yards and the two TD's but threw four interceptions. Roderick Brooks rushed for 78 yards in Scott's absence and receiver Ian Wilson led with five catches for 107 yards.
"Tonight was an opportunity for him (Brooks) to play a lot of snaps and develop some rapport with the offense," head coach Travis Rhatigan said. "And it was good to see him break one."
The Blazers' 11-0 start sets a school record for the first eleven games played.
"We had to have a lot of people step up this game," said cornerback Bryan Wyatt, whose forced fumble set up Brooks touchdown run late in the fourth. "A lot of our players came in and did a great job of making plays."

"BROOKS BREAKS FOR A 41 YARD TOUCHDOWN RUN LATE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER"

SMU (5-5, 4-2) scored on Henry to Grant 69 yard pitch and catch with a little more than 4 minutes left in the fourth to put the Mustangs down 24-21.

Ed Henry was 23 for 45 for SMU, but threw a bad interception in the red zone before the half, they had a chance to knot the score at 14-14. But instead UAB used a great two minute drill to grab a field goal and 17-7 halftime lead.
"We had opportunities to win as an offense and I feel like I let the team down," Henry said. "I didn't play very well today. I let their pressure get to me. The defense played great. They gave up 17 points to one of the best offenses in the nation and I just didn't get it done."
Smith, No. 2 in the nation in yards passing per game, also connected with Matt Ford for a 6-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter as the Blazers rebounded from a 95 yard kick return that saw J. Wheeler of SMU return to open the second half to put them up 24-14.
--
"THIS 95 YARD KIOCKOFF RETURN BY WHEELER (LEFT) WAS ANSWERED WHEN FORD (RIGHT) GRABBED HIS TENTH TOUCHDOWN RECEPTION OF THE YEAR"

About as valuable as anyone for UAB were Linebackers Tom Slaughter and Dan McCray. The duo combined for six sacks a piece harassing SMU's freshmen all afternoon.

"It's always nice to hit someone and affect their play," said Slaughter, who came in No. 2 in the nation in sacks behind teammate Jerry Bowser. "I mean it helps out our defense tremendously. When you have a guy second guessing, now our DB's can play with him and bait him."
As a whole the Blazers notched eight sacks and held SMU to -49 yards rushing. The help was much needed on third downs as well as they held them to just 3 of 13.
"We dont care if our offense turns the ball over because at the end of the day our job is to get it back." Strong Safety Eugene Jackson said. Jackson had UAB's only interception.
--
"MCCRAY AND SLAUGHTER LED THE CHARGE AND HELPED UAB ESCAPE A CLOSE ONE"

"
There were certain segments of the of the game that hurt us, and Their defense did a great job of holding on for them," said SMU's head coach.

The Blazers enjoy a much needed bye week after playing eleven straight week's. More information on Matthew Scott's injury will be known when the team heads back to Birmingham.

Season's a winding down folks, only three weeks left until conference championship week and boy is the BCS finally starting to pan out. I'm Erik Kuselias and this is College Football Live. Here are this past weekends Headlines

KEY VICTORIES, AND HUGE LOSSES
  • #5 UAB AND #3 UTAH STAY UNDEFEATED WITH WIN, BUT LOSE STAR PLAYERS FOR THE SEASON
  • BAYLOR SHOCKS THE SOONERS WITH A 31-26 VICTORY UPS RECORD TO 8-1
  • MICHIGAN STATE ROLLS #6 NEVADA 38-14 GIVING NEVADA SEASON'S FIRST LOSS
  • VOLS SCORE 24 STRAIGHT IN THE FOURTH INCLUDING A J. HARRIS 27 YARD FIELD GOAL WITH 14 SECONDS LEFT TO SHOCK #2 ARKANSAS 31-30
  • GAMECOCKS CONTINUE TO IMPLODE LOSING SECOND STRAIGHT, THIS TIME TO UNRANKED FLORIDA GATORS 23-17
  • BATTLE OF THE TECHS GO TO GEORGIA TECH AS THEY UPSET THE HOKIES 24-21
Mark May's Thoughts!

As I stated a few week's back America should watch out for the Baylor Bears and they certaintly haven't disappoint knocking off the Sooners in Norman this past weekend. Another team with a surprise season, the Fresno State Bulldogs. For a few weeks now I've heard how they dont get much love from the Polls or us analyst. Well the spot light is on them this week as the whole nation will see them take on the #16 Nevada (9-1). At 9-0 Fresno State is led by running back A.J Wiley and a the nations #2 defense. Ive always admired Pat Hill's "Shut up and hit somebody" attitude. He has these guys on the verge of a top ten seeding and playing balanced smart football. Fresno we'll be watching you this week.

Thanks Mark, as he mentioned Fresno is finally getting their due jumping up to #11 with a 9-0 record. Speaking of undefeated teams we had had two lose this weekend while the other five in the top ten kept their hopes for a national championship alive. Here is this weeks BCS top 10.
  1. LSU 10-0
  2. OREGON 10-0
  3. UTAH 10-0
  4. TCU 10-0
  5. UAB 11-0
  6. WISCONSIN 9-1
  7. ALABAMA 8-2
  8. IOWA 9-1
  9. BOISE STATE 7-2
  10. BAYLOR 8-1
Starting this week we'll start giving you the top five players in stats for one of the falling categories (rec, rush, tackles, sacks, int, pass) this week we'll bring you the top 5 players in passing yards
  1. Mike Moore (TROY) 3,347 yards 35 touchdowns
  2. Wayne Smith (UAB) 3,057 yards 34 touchdowns
  3. Nate Bryant (Oregon State) 3,046 yards 30 touchdowns
  4. Jonathon Vaughn (ECU) 2,962 yards 29 touchdowns
  5. Vince Alston (Boise) 2,916 yards 26 touchdowns
This week we have some top notch games on deck, here are the marquee match ups this weekend:

#11 Fresno State (9-0) at #16 Nevada (9-1)
Nevada can clinch the MWC with a win this weekend, but after a humilating loss to Michigan State last weekend the wolfpack could be vulnerable. Fresno comes in with the #2 ranked defense and looks to get a say so as to who will be conference champs.

#3 Utah (10-0) at #24 Oregon State (9-1)
Oregon State finally cracked the top 25 led by quarterback Nate Bryant (3,046 30td) and look to upset the Utes on national television. With a win Utah can Clinch a birth in the conference championship. The Utes bring in the nations third ranked pass defense to try and stop Bryant

#19 Duke (9-1) at #13 Virginia Tech (8-2)
This is a winner take all for the ACC Coastal division. VTech was upset at home a week ago to Georgia Tech in OT and look to bounce back But they'll have to do so possibly without star tailback N. Davis. They also have to find a way to stop Duke Quarterback Nic Copeland (2,817 30td 4int)

#21 Illinois (9-1) at #6 Wisconsin (9-1)
A ugly upset loss in week 1 to western Michigan is the reason the Illini aren't 10-0. After reeling off nine straight wins they'll travel to hostile Camp Randall with a trip to the Big 10 conference championship game on the line. They'll not only have to contend with 80,000 rans but a near perfect quarterback C. Harper (2,533 27td 2int) But the nations #3 ranked rush attack averaging 180 yards per game. College gameday will be on hand for this one.

Probably the biggest weekend yet coming up. A lot of good games to watch, hope you enjoy until next time. So long.

BLAZER WEEKLY
SCOTT OUT!!!
MATTHEW SCOTT OUT 8-10 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY
FOR DISLOCATED ELBOW

NCAA leading rusher Matthew Scott found out he would miss the remainder of the season with a Dislocated elbow. He had surgery this morning to repair damaged ligaments.
"Tough (SMH) Just tough, you hate to see this thing happen to a great talent." said head coach Travis Rhatigan at a special news conference for the announcement. "I talked to him after the surgery, he knows what he has to do and we hope to have him ready for spring ball."
Scott, who is just a sophomore was gaining national attention jumping on everyones Heisman watch list. For the year he had 1,642 yards and 18 touchdowns. He had broken the single season record for yards and touchdowns. The Blazers will now look to return specialist Roderick Brooks to be their main back with Cody Gore backing him up.
"This bye week comes at a great time for us. Brooks can now get some quality reps with the ones and we'll take it from there."

Recruiting News
Blazers grabbed their fifth commit toady from two star Tackle Michael Miller. Miller, from Adamsville, Alabama played this season at Pearl River Community College and will come in the spring with three years eligibility.
"Miller will provide depth for this Oline. We hope he brings in a veteran type leadership role having come from a jc and we expect him to make us better."
Head Coach Travis Rhatigan

Coach Rhatigan speaks to the media about the SMU game, what does the loss of Scott do to the season and the upcoming bye week.

Opening Statement: Definitely an eye opening experience this weekend against SMU. Havent really played in a tough game or environment since we traveled to Virginia Tech back in September. Gotta give credit where its due and they get their credit. They did a good job in slowing down our pass attack. Smith threw four interceptions and they were good reads just better plays by their kids. The young quarterback Henry did a good job standing in the pocket, we got to him a lot but he kept his poise and made some plays. Im not overly excited about how we played, we gave up a kickoff return to open the second half and that was very frustrating because if we stay in our lanes he doesn't score. We'll have to work on that this week. I was pleased with how the defense responded in the fourth quarter. This unit is hungry and I like how we got after it. Still a lot of work tho. With Scott now out for the year we're gonna move Matt Ford to returner for both kick and punt return and we're gonna make Brooks the starting tailback, he showed he can carry the rock and be a every down back for last weekend, so we hope to not miss a beat.
Like I said this bye week comes at a great time, we get to sit down and really break down our film and see what we need to work on this week. We'll let the guys off for the first half of the week and then Wednesday we're back at it.

Week 13 turned out to be a barn burner, the #1 team fell while other teams continued to impress. The BCS picture is starting to shape out and the BCS Busters are in full effect. Here are this week's top headlines.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT:
  • Nevada's Martin throws four touchdown passes as Wolfpack run away from Fresno 45-31
  • #2 Oregon stays unbeaten after winning a thriller against Washington 29-28
  • The loss of star receiver Will Turner a week ago doesn't faze the #3 Utes as they go on the road to beat Oregon State 38-30
  • #4 TCU clinches thier first ever Big East title with 45-10 win over Louisville
  • The arm of Copeland is not enough as the Hokies prevail over Duke 28-21
  • Wisconsin needs four overtimes to be Illini 41-35
  • #1 LSU falls to Ole Miss 31-24, Ole Miss controlled the Tigers holding them to just 2 of 14 on third downs
Mark May's Thoughts!

This is why you have to Love College Football. A #1 team can look like the best team in all of football, and then fall to lesser ranked team and cause all kinds of ruckus in the polls. What I'm saying is LSU loss may look bad from a record standpoint losing to a 5-6 Ole Miss team. But if over look your opponent anything can happen. Last week I gave the Bulldogs of Fresno State a shout out and now I feel I may have Jinxed them. Nevada beat Fresno up and down the field giving the voters a better reason of why they didnt allow Fresno to sky rocket up the polls with their undefeated record. They get another chance to impress as they take on #7 Boise State one of the hottest teams in the country right now.

Thanks Mark, as the weeks wind down teams look to move up. The BCS came out with their new rankings and a new #1. Here are the rankings heading into week 14 of the college football season.
  1. Oregon 11-0
  2. Utah 11-0
  3. TCU 11-0
  4. UAB 11-0
  5. Wisconsin 10-1
  6. Alabama 9-2
  7. Penn State 9-2
  8. Boise State 8-2
  9. Baylor 9-1
  10. Virginia Tech 9-2
Here are your Rushing leaders at this point in the season.
  1. Matthew Scott (UAB) 1,642 yards 18 touchdowns
  2. Joey Peterson (GT) 1,484 yards 14 touchdowns
  3. Karl Smith (UCF) 1,435 yards 21 touchdowns
  4. Cedric Lambert (LSU) 1,404 yards 14 touchdowns
  5. Phil Hill (BC) 1,260 yards 13 touchdowns
With no games affecting the BCS after this week until conference championship week in two weeks, this final week is big for teams making a case. Here are the most meaningful games this week.

Notre Dame (7-4) at #3 TCU (11-0)

After a 7-1 start the Irish have dropped three straight games. The injury plagued Irish hope to play spoiler on TCU's final game of the season. TCU who is sporting the nation #2 ranked offense looks to keep their chances at a BCS title open with a win.

Cal (4-7) at #2 Utah (11-0)

Cal despite their record has played top teams fairly close losing to #1 Oregon 35-42 and #25 Oregon State 28-31. With a chance to improve and head into the off season the Golden Bears have upset on their minds. Across the board Utah is better statistically in every category. With the schools highest every ranking a win could have them very ready for a PAC-12 conference championship match with #1 Oregon.

#15 Fresno State (9-1) at #7 Boise State (8-2)

Fresno is coming off their first loss of the season after losing to Nevada who clinched the division in that game. After losing two straight games Boise has ripped off seven in a row and look like the Boys in Blue of old as they try and get to another BCS bowl game. They'll look to quarterback Vince Alston to lead the way on Senior Day.

#10 LSU (10-1) at #13 Arkansas (10-1)

Just a few weeks ago these two teams were #1 and #2 and were thinking National Championship. Now they're trying just to get to the SEC championship game as the winner will represent the SEC West. This has been one of the better SEC rivalries as of late and these two teams look to add another thrilling chapter.

#1 Oregon (11-0) at #25 Oregon State (9-2)

The Civil War
Oregon has dominated this series as of late and a win sets the Ducks up with another possible chance at going to the BCS championship game. This game will feature two of the conference top quarterbacks in Nate Bryant (OSU) and John Miller (OU) but more importantly Jaques Brown and TJ Miller bring in a double dose pure talent in the backfield for Oregon. Should be a good one as college gameday will be there.

Its all set up, got the story lines and now we got the great games, we'll see you next week.
