WEEK 4 Top Games
#10 Virginia Tech (1-0) at Ohio State (1-2)
The 10th-ranked Hokies are coming off a scare of East Carolina and will be trying to show a national audience that the game was just first game jitters. The Buckeye's have been obliterated by Georgia Techhave already lost twice this season at home but with new head coach Urban Meyer the Buckeye's are 1-0 and looking to go on a run.

South Carolina (1-1) at #13 Alabama (1-1)
Both teams have humiliating losses to start the year. In so many ways this is a make or break season game. With both SEC division deep with contenders a loss for any of the two in this game could ruin any chance of a conference championship appearance. South Carolina only averaged 13 points a game in their two games ranking them 116th in the nation. Alabama usually has a top 5 defense but are now currently ranked 71st in the country. One of the two will have to step up or risk ending a season before it even started.

#11 TCU (1-1) at #7 Illinois (2-0)
TCU needs a victory to stay in the talks of BCS officials. The Horned Frogs got embarrassed by LSU to open the season at home and now have to travel to Champagne to take on a very good Illinois team. Illinois is trying for a signature victory. Illinois is slowly solidifying themselves as BCS contenders. Averaging 44 points a game TCU's Defense will have their hands full.

#6 Georgia (2-0) at Houston (2-1)
After a opening season blowout loss to Fresno 45-10 Houston made headlines when they went into Tuscaloosa and handle Alabama 38-21. Now the Cougars are 2-1 and have three huge games coming up starting with Georgia at home. Wr's Adam Randle and Adam Frank lead the Big 12 in receiving and will look to try and get open against the nations top overall defense. Georgia's defense ranks #1 overall and against the pass and is #4 against the run. They have a 17-0 shutout over Clemson and a 45-10 blowout of South Carolina on their hands. But they face a hot Houston team playing at home. Should be a good one.

"Just blessed to get this opportunity. You never wish bad upon anyone else but Im gonna take this opportunity and try to run with it, no pun intended lol" Said Gore.

Blazers Continue Preparations For 0-2 Arkansas:
Matchup Preview | September 20, 2014
@
UAB Blazers
(2-0, Away)

Arkansas Razorbacks
(0-2, Home)

The UAB football team continued its preparations Wednesday for this week's road game at Arkansas. The Blazers worked out for close to two hours at Legion Field as they work toward Saturday's contest with the Razorbacks at DW-Reynolds Stadium in Fayetteville. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. CT.
The game can be heard on the Blazer IMG Sports Network with the pregame show starting at 10:30 p.m. CT. David Crane and John Whitcomb will call the action. Locally in the Birmingham area, the contest can be heard on WUHT-FM 107.7.
UAB (2-0) will be looking for its third straight win when they take on winless Arkansas (0-2). The Blazers are coming off bye week after beating Ohio State 40-14
Still, Blazer head coach Travis Rhatigan knows his team needs to be ready to play Saturday afternoon. "We need to stay focused," Rhatigan said. "I think they are a very capable team. Their defensive front is very physical. "
Rhatigan also talked about his respect for Razorback head coach Bobby Petrino. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for him,"Rhatigan said. "Look what he did not only in college football, but in pro ball, and all that stuff. He did a great job at Louisville. His record kind of speaks for itself. "
When these two teams met last season Arlansas was ranked #4 in the country coming off a BCS bowl appearance, a lot has changed since. Blowout road losses to #18 Michigan State and #22 Texas have the Razorbacks glad to be home.
"We went in there last year, so we know how tough it will be." Sophomore quarterback Adam Dyks said, "Its their first home game of the season and we know they will be extra amped and ready to go."
The Blazers will have a light practice Thursday morning before departing for Arkansas Friday afternoon.

THINGS TO WATCH ON UAB:
  • Coming off a bye week will they start slow or on track
  • HB Cody Core will be the main focus on the run game can he continue to help UAB out
  • Adam Dyks has been on fire the first two game's can he handle the crowd as well as he did at Ohio State
  • UAB's defense has been a force through the first two games, with Arkansas struggling will they handle the emotional charge Arkansas will bring for their first home game
THINGS TO WATCH FOR ARKANSAS:
  • HB Bret Clement needs to get more involved with offense, he's avg 5.5 yards a carrie but only has 20 touches through two games
  • Arkansas needs a WR to step up and become the go to guy: Devon Richard and Doug Williams have shown flashes but need to be consistent
  • In two games this Arkansas defense only has one sack, How aggressive will coach Petrino let this unit play in front of the home crowd

DYKS THROWS SIX TOUCHDOWN PASSES AS THE BLAZERS ROLL BY ARKANSAS 49-10

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -
Adam Dyks season just keeps getting better.
A near-perfect passing game with six scoring tosses helped by the Arkansas Razorbacks becoming another victim of UAB's fierce defense saw the Blazers start off conference play with a win.
"I'm having a blast playing football right now," The Sophomore quarterback said after he threw for 363 yards and tied a school record with his touchdown passes to send UAB past Arkansas 49-10 on Saturday.
"If everything goes as planned its gonna be a special year for us," said Dyks, who also threw two interceptions.
UAB (3-0 overall, 1-0 SEC) has won its first 3 games in all four years head coach Travis Rhatigan has been at the helm.
Dyks completed 11 of 20 passes with no sacks. His 72 yard touchdown pass to Matt Ford in the third quarter Tied him with the school record for most touchdown passes in a single game.
"I begged coach to let me throw one more," Dyks said. "But at the same time I knew it would be disrespectful as we were already up big."

"He's finally seeing the field well and he understands what we want out of him" said UAB coach Travis Rhatigan.
"Our team takes great pride in everybody's individual success because they understand that it is a team effort. I think that is why they play so hard."

The Blazers took the early lead on 14-yard pass to Matt Ford to cap a 5-play drive in the first quarter. Then the defense answered with a Harvey Nelson 54 yard interception return putting UAB up 14-0 just minutes into the game.

Another Interception, this time by Adam Love saw Dyks connect with Ford for 65 yards on a beautiful post route. It was Ford's second of three touchdowns on the day. Up 21-0 the defense did not let up, pressuring Quarterback J. Mosby who was just 3-13 in the first half, his in-completions the results of drops as the secondary was all Over the Houston receivers. Touchdown passes to Jackson and Sims from 65 and 77 yards out saw the Blazers take a commanding 35-0 lead into halftime.

(NELSON'S PICK 6 AS WELL AS LOVE'S INTERCEPTION HELPED UAB BUILD A EARLY LED)

After that, Arkansas's only points came on a N. Spencer field goal of 18 yards and a P McFadden 28 yard fumble return in the third quarter.

Over shadowed by Dyks passing numbers UAB's defense was just as good holding Arkansas to just 3 points on offense. "We're not ranked coming off a national championship appearance, you damn right we have something to prove." OutspokenMiddle Linebacker Timi McCollum stated after the game. McCollum had a game high 11 tackles 3 for a loss as he and the Blazers stymied Arkansas run game holding them to just 40 yards. Tom Cox would get UAB's only sack. The defense also held the Razorbacks to just 1 of 11 on third downs forcing three turnovers. Cornerback Adam Love relished the chance to brag about his defense because offense is never a concern.
"We can score with the best of them," Love said after his Blazers scored at least 49 points for the third straight game.
"We held them to 40 yards rushing and 254 yards all night and 3 points offensively. In today's age, that's pretty good defense
."
--
(MCCOLLUM WAS THE HEAD CATALYST IN STOPPING THE RAZORBACKS RUN GAME, THE DEFENSE FED OFF HIS ENERGY)

Love finished second on the team with 7 tackles and a interception, he also forced a fumble and broke up four passes.

In his first start for the Blazers tailback Cody Gore had 18 carries for 158 yards as the Blazers worked him the whole second half.
Up next the 3-0 Blazers welcome the 3-0 Ole Miss Rebels ranked #24 in the country.

WEEK 4 TOP GAMES:
#24 Ole Miss (3-0) at UAB (3-0)
Whats at stake? a spot in the top 25, while Ole Miss is #24 UAB is still on the outside looking in. Arguably the best team in SEC UAB brings in a stout defense ranked #12 overall and #2 in the SEC. Giving up only 254 yards per game and better yet just a mere 27.3 yards per game rushing the Blazers are a tough unit to move the ball on and every possession will count. Ole Miss defense isn't bad either ranking them 24th in the land and 5th in the SEC the key for them however is to get Receiver R. Dunn the ball in space he leads the team averaging over 166 yards of all purpose a game. It's UAB first home game since week one expect Birmingham to be rocking.

#7 TCU (2-1) at #22 Houston (3-1)
Houston is by far one of the hottest teams in the counrty right now having beat Alabama and Georgia while they were top 10 teams. They needs a win to continue its march toward a showdown with #2 Oklahoma next week on this murderous row schedule of theirs. TCU looked to have gotten back on track after beating Illinois last week. Since their opening season lost to LSU TCU has displayed top level defense ranking them #13 overall and #3 behind Txas and OU in the Big 12, they are third in the country with six overall interceptions and hope to get more with Houstons pass happy offense.

Penn State (3-0) at #17 Michigan State (3-0)
After a down year where a year ago Joe Paterno retired, Penn State is playing good football. Running back K. Freeman has been much help for Penn State avg 92 yards rushing a game. The ball control offense is helped out with a stout defense as well ranked #3 in the Big Ten Penn State's bend but dont break defense has allowed them to pull out close wins. As for Michigan State wins over West Virginia and Arkansas have the Spartans confident heading into conference play. Quarterback A. Jacobs has been outstanding throwing 12 touchdowns and only 1 interception. Will he and the Spartan offense be able to punch it in against Penn State.

#5 Oklahoma State (3-0) at #8 Auburn (3-0)
While the fans have spoken, in a recent poll that says the Cowboys havent played against anyone (FCS W, Idaho, and Miami (OH) they finally get a primetime match against a worthy opponent in Auburn. Oklahoma State is averaging 50.3 points a game good for second in the land, quarterback P. Warren has led a fierce passing attack and F. Poe balances them out with the run game. But can they play defense? Auburn comes into the game having won all three of their games on the road, at Baylor, at #14 Mississippi State and at Kansas State. The big one being Mississippi State were they shut down one of the better quarterbacks in Buck Browning. Auburn knows how to get pressure as a team in three games they have 13 sacks. More importantly the Auburn offense has been real good, running back Eddie White has carried the load averaging 115 yards a game Will Auburn look past Okie State to UAB next week or will they come handle business. The game is in SEC country and the nation will be watching.

NOTABLE GAMES:
#4 LSU (3-0) at South Carolina (2-1)
USC (2-1) at #1 Oregon (3-0)
Missouri (2-1) at #20 Texas (3-0)
Texas A&M (2-0) at #13 Georgia (2-1)
#11 Stanford (4-0) at Arizona State (2-0)
Purdue (3-1) at #3 Iowa (3-0)

BLAZER WEEKLY
Wed Sept 24th, 2014

Opportunistic defense leading Blazers:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala - Through three games the Blazers have only given up a total of 34 points good for a little over 11 points a game. Take away two scores for touchdowns on turnovers by the offense and the defense now has only given up just two touchdowns through three games.
"Its something we as a group aren't surprised at." Linebacker Timi McCollum said. The leader of this unit has a team leading 21 tackles."We spoke it during winter conditioning and spring ball, two lost national championships its about time we step up and win one." The Blazers are also led in the defensive backs Adam Love and Carl Holycross. They both have two interceptions a piece and as of late have not been picked on.
"We try to set the tone right out the gates." Defensive end Tom Cox said, Cox is second in the SEC with 5 sacks this year. "Whether its trash talking or just taking a random shot, we try to let the opposing teams know its gonna be a long day."
The Blazers will get tested this weekend when #24 and 3-0 Ole Miss comes to town.
