KEY INJURIES ROCK BLAZER NATION AS SEASON APPROACHES:

(ALL AMERICAN FREE SAFETY CARL HOLYCROSS)

Birmingham, Ala - In a competitive fall camp for the UAB Blazers, Starting Free Safety Carl Holycross who was the BCS National Championship defensive player of the game left practice after awkwardly twisting his knee going up for a interception. Further test showed he tore his ACL and will be out for the rest of the season.
"(sigh) Thats tough, he was a big time leader on the field for us. It's time for someone to step up." A dejected Travis Rhatigan said.
Also in this mornings practice, starting Middle linebacker Timi McCollum got a severe high ankle sprain and is told he may miss the season opener vs Florida State and possibly the home opener vs Tennessee.
"Its apart of the game, we have to learn how to adapt, we have the depth now its time to see if we have the athletes." Said Rhatigan.

2015 BLAZER TEAM PREVIEW
DEFENDING CHAMPS READY FOR JOURNEY:

HEISMAN HOPEFUL ADAM DYKS BRINGS THE DESIRED LEADERSHIP TO THE BLAZERS:

OFFENSE OVERVIEW -
The offense returns six starters from last years national championship team. With a lot of speed and better yet more experience new offensive coordinator Rashad Stevenson has to be licking his chops. His new spread scheme fits perfectly with quarterback Adam Dyks as he likes to send four and five receivers sets to the field.
"Its exciting." Stevenson said at UAB's Media day. "There is a lot of talent here, and a whole lot of speed. The players understand the scheme and we're ready to go."
Here's a break down of each offensive position.
Quarterbacks: With all the preseason magazines out its no secret Junior quarterback Adam Dyks is a Heisman hopeful to start the season. The calm and poised quarterback comes into this year hoping to have an even better year than last year after throwing for 3,871 and tying the school record with 49 touchdown passes. If he can stay healthy expects the Blazers to be contenders to repeat. He just needs 2,400 yards to become the schools All Time leading passer.

Running Backs - The back position will see a new starter this year. After a great battle during the spring between red shirt Freshmen Lawrence Long and Ellis Fox as well as red shirt sophomore Luke Sullivan head coach Travis Rhatigan left it open for fall camp. Long was awarded the starting spot a week into camp and looks primed for a big year. The fastest of the three (93) Long also brings size and has looked good running in between the tackles. Luke Sullivan will back up Long. Sullivan saw time in games last season rushing for four scores and averaged 4.6 yards per carry. At Fullback Travis Johnson returns for his Senior year. Johnson was also named offensive captain. He along with RS- Freshmen Josh Burley will look to be the lead blockers in short yardage, Burley beat out Sophomore Brad Frye who started last year.

Wide Receivers - Probably the most talented bunch of receivers in the nation as a whole. Everybody returns back from last years national championship team. The Blazers also welcome back Senior receiver Matt Ford who missed the majority of last season with a back injury. His injury allowed for fellow receivers like Travis Jackson and Bill Cooley to shine. Jackson won the Biletnikof award last year and Cooley was a freshmen All American. This unit is rather deep as well. Dan Sims who caught 8 touchdown receptions a year ago will see some time and Bill Callahan. The staff has also talked about red shirt freshmen Travis Barnes getting into the mix, Barns is the fastest on the team and will be returning kicks as well.

Offensive Line - If there was a question mark on this offense it would be at offensive line. The Blazers bring back only two players with experience. Junior John Culver will see his first action as a Blazer this year and his job is huge. He will have to protect Adam Dyks blindside, he's had some issues at practice but has gotten better daily. More new faces include RS- Sophomore Craig McFadden. McFadden was once a big time signee for UAB and now he finally gets to show his worth also on Dyks blind side at Guard. True Freshmen Lonnie Cantrell will get the start at right tackle, he'll play alongside guard Ryan Billings a four year starter for UAB.

DEFENSIVE STAND!
NEW COORDINATOR FRANK HICKMAN HOPES TO CONTINUE UAB'S DOMINANCE ON DEFENSE!

(COACHES HOPE #57 TERRY JACKSON CAN STEP IN AND MAKE A IMPACT)

Defensive Overview - UAB is coming off perhaps one of the more finest defensive seasons in recent memory. But gone are All Americans Cortez Means, Tom Cox and Vince Jones but the Blazers do return 8 starters. New defensive coordinator Frank Hickman is excited about the athletes that they do have coming back.
"You never try to rebuild, you always want to reload." an excited Hickman said. "We have some great hard hitting athletes on this side of the ball, now its a matter of them understanding their role and making plays."
The defense will be without another All American Carl Holycross who was lost for the season with a knee injury a week ago and defensive captain Timi McCollum may miss the first game of the season against Florida State with a ankle sprain.

Defensive Line - The loss of Tom Cox would be huge to most schools but to UAB it gives another great athlete the opportunity to do what he did. Phillip Mason returns for his Senior season and hopes to build off last season where he recorded 3.0 sacks. William Joseph was slated to take over the vacancy left by Cox but true Freshmen Scott Gaither has overly impressed during fall camp and won the starting job for the right end. At defensive tackle All American Marcus Leak returns for his senior season. Leak was instrumental in UAB having the number one run stopping defense, sack wise he had only 3.0 far less than his 9.5 All American season but is a force in the trenches. Junior College transfer John Patrick will start alongside him to round out the defensive line.

Linebackers - Very solid unit for UAB, once thought to not have depth the blazers went out recruited some of the nations top backers. Timi McCollum returns for his Senior season. The two time All American has had a great off season and looks to lead this defense back to the title, he needs 11 sacks to break to the school record for sacks in a career, quite the feat but the last two seasons he's recorded 13.5 and 10.5. He will miss the first game of the season however with a sprained ankle. No Worries. The coaches are raven about Sophomore Terry Jackson, Jackson has had a great spring and an even better fall with big hits and always around the ball. He'll start at the vacant position that All American Cortez Means left due to graduation. Freshmen Dan Clayton has impressed enough to get the other backer position. He along with four other freshmen are expected to see time this year.

Defensive Backs - This like the receivers is the most experienced group on the team, returning four of five starters from their nickle style of play. Big question is who will step up now that free safety Carl Holycross is out for the year with a medical red shirt. Jacob Brown a junior has the experience but RS- Freshmen Korey Rodgers seems more athletic and rangy. Right now Rhatigan has Brown as the starter. " In this situation I like Brown at the moment, he's backed up Holycross for two years now and he understands what Hickman wants from his safeties." Said Rhatigan. He did also state that if Brown cant handle the defense he'll quickley put Rodgers in there. Dominique Rhodes returns as the strong safety. The Blazers go 10 deep at corner, a very competitive group Adam Love comes back for his senior season. With 13 career interceptions Love needs just four to become the schools career leader for interceptions, not to far behind with 10 career interceptions Junior Harvey Nelson hopes to repeat as he led the team last year with 8 interceptions. Matt Gatewood may be the best cover corner on the team he along with Carl harvey and Tim Rhodes will see significant time and possible starts.

TOP GAMES FOR WEEK 1

#24 UAB at #22 Florida State
The Blazers open up the defense of their national championship on the road in one of the historically toughest venues in the country. Quarterback Adam Dyks will need to be flawless as the Blazers will be missing two key defensive players in this one. For Florida State they look to build off their 10-win season a year ago. Offensively they have new faces in key positions and will need to be smart against a experienced Blazer defense. But dont look over the Seminoles defensively who return six all conference players including Austin Barnes (LB) and Andy Clark (DT). Not your usual early season match-up.

#14 Alabama at Boise State
Both these programs are coming off not so hot seasons. Alabama turned theirs around and ended on a high note with 8-5 record and Bowl win. Boise finished 7-6 and grabbed the New Mexico bowl. Its a new season and this game will very well make or break a team. Bama comes in with heisman hopeful running back Gavin Childress. A big back at 6'2 231 with 4.3 speed (94) Childress is a man amongst boys out there. Boise counters him with one of the better passers in the country. Peter Hairston will need his receivers to step up though. A huge game that Boise thrives in could get them back on the map.

Other Games of Note:
BYU at #4 Cal
Pittsburgh at Kentucky
Notre Dame at Miami (OH)

This game will be a battle of top defenses as Florida State mirrors UAB's style. “We have to make sure we’re ready to play,” Offensive coordinator Rashad Stevenson said. “Its the first game of the season, they have their crowd going, we have to come out and execuute offensively."“I know our guys are excited to play. UAB HEADS TO SEMINOLE NATION FOR SEMESTER'S FIRST TEST:
UAB starts its defense in a tough environment and without two key assets to their defense. Middle Linebacker Timi McCollum will miss the game with a high ankle sprain, and free safety Carl Holycross is out for the season. Linebacker Bryan Ramsey will get his first start as well as Jacob Brown who replaces Holycross. As good of offense as UAB has, Florida State's defense is just as good. Returning key players back on the defense that finished 7th in country a year ago the Seminoles are primed for another run. Preseason All American linebacker Austin Barnes returns with all ACC defensive tackle Andy Clark and Free Safety Ronnie Clark a true ball hawk who snagged 7 interceptions last. The opportunities will be there for him as he and the Seminoles face one of the best passing quarterback in the nation Adam Dyks. He has a plethora of receivers including Biletnikof award winner Travis Jackson. Florida State returns running back Mark Gibson who is proven but quarterback Ryan Goddard a senior is making his first start against an experienced defense. Also returning is receiver Scott Jacobs but after Jacobs the next four receivers on Florida State's depth chart have a combined 15 career catches. Someone will have to step up.

HARD FOUGHT!
IN THE END DYKS WAS TOO MUCH FOR SEMINOLES AS UAB PREVAILS 52-40
Photobucket
(FLORIDA STATE DEFENSIVE TACKLE ANDY CLARK LOOKS ON AS ADAM DYKS CELEBRATES A TOUCHDOWN PASS DURING SATURDAY'S GAME)

Birmingham, Ala - We know what Adam Dyks can do, Florida State knows what he can do, even all of America knows what Adam Dyks can do. But no one knew how that UAB defense would fair missing two All American players. It took four quarters Saturday for UAB's defense to finally understand how good they are. Up 45-40 in a wild back and forth game UAB's pressure finally started paying off, back to back sacks by defensive tackle Marcus Leak and linebacker Terry Jackson saw Florida State's Goddard throw a ill-advised interception to Adam Love and two plays later Adam Dyks would break the school's single game record for touchdowns hitting Travis Jackson on the 49-yard pass play putting UAB up for good overcoming two second half interceptions to win 52-40.
"Thats what it's all about, going to battle with your men." Head coach Travis Rhatigan said. "We stuck with the gameplan and new if we could grab one more turnover we would win this game."

Dyks finished 19-26 for 394 yards and 7 touchdowns after starting the game of 3-8 with 2 interceptions. The magnificent three, as they call themselves hauled in the majority of Dyks passes. Travis Jackson led the way with 7 receptions for 141 yards and two scores, Bill Cooley grabbed 5 receptions for 135 yards and two scores and back from injury Matt Ford hauled in 4 catches for 96 yards three of them for scores.
"It's a cool record but most importantly we got out of here with a win." Said Dyks.
RS- Freshmen Ellis Fox spelled Lawrence Long who suffered a mild concussion and grinded out 77 yards on 16 carries.

For Florida State, they showed that can play with anyone. Down 14-3 in the second quarter they decided to attack the young backers of UAB, running back Mark Gibson finished with 190 yards and two scores. Quarterback Ryan Goddard stood up to the challenge helping Florida State stay in the game throwing 17-25 for 290 yards and two scoring tosses but three second half turnovers would ultimately doom him and the Seminoles. He had two interceptions and a lost fumble. Receivers Scott Jacobs (4-137-1td), James Little (3-61-1td) and Jeff Doyle (6-61) All were successful finding the wholes in the defense but experience showed late in the game.

Florida State forced the games first turnover on the games first play freshmen tight end Charrod Randle caught a quick slant and turned it up field only to get welcomed to division one football by Florida State's Austin Barnes. The Seminoles would only get a field goal off the turnover however. The Blazers would then get a 38-yard touchdown pass from Dyks to Ford, then at the start of the second both would connect again, Ford showed no rust as his concentration helped him tip toe for the score. Up 14-3 the Blazers looked to be off to the route.
"We had to try and slow the game down, UAB is a team that wants to keep going and stay in rhythm." Said Jimbo Fisher.
Florida State would use a 9 play drive ending in a 34-yard rushing touchdown by Johnson. On the drive Florida State ran right at the Blazer defense, the scoring run was on a draw on third and 7. The teams would exchange second quarter field goals and Matt Ford would catch his third touchdown of the game but with :43 seconds left in the half Mark Gibson would run in his first touchdown jetting passed UAB's defense for 76-yards. The teams would go into the half with UAB up 24-21.

The second half started where Gibson left off, he would cruise in for another 72-yard score putting the Seminoles up 27-24. Dyks would then fire his first of two interceptions, what seemed to be a touchdown reception for Travis Jackson free safety C. Phillips just took it out of hands for the turnover. four plays later Goddard would hit Jacobs on a short crosser, a devastating block on corner Matt Gatewood saw Jacobs hit the sideline for a 65 yard score. In a blink of an eye the Seminoles were up 34-24.
Photobucket--Photobucket
(FLORIDA STATE TOOK A 10-POINT THIRD QUARTER LEAD THANKS TO TIMELY PLAYS BY PHILLIPS AND GIBSON)

Dyks and the Blazers didnt waste anytime to make up for the turnover, he would hit Cooley streaking for a 55-yard touchdown, A crushing blow from freshmen Scott Gaither on Ryan Goddard forced a fumble that UAB would recover and Dyks hit Travis Jackson from 8-yards out to put the Blazers back up 38-34 heading into the fourth quarter. The Blazers seemed to be taking over freshmen corner Matt Gatewood would grab his first career interception and Dyks would then toss his 6th touchdown pass of the game hit Bill Cooley for his second score, this time from 33-yards out. The Blazers were up 45-34 and in control.
Photobucket--Photobucket
(BLAZERS ANSWERED BACK WITH TURNOVERS AND TWO BILL COOLEY TOUCHDOWNS)

The Seminoles would tack on another score but a failed two-point conversion saw Florida State down 40-45. Still in control and running the clock UAB faced a 3rd and three midway through the fourth quarter. Adam Dyks would then make his second mistake when he and receiver Bill Cooley were on different pages, Cooley broke a route in and Dyks through it out, cornerback T. Marshall would grab the pick. Thats UAB defense answered the call, the ladder part of the second half UAB's defense was gaining momentum knocking Goddard down grabbing turnovers, but no drive was as big for this defense as the current, two sacks and a interception gave the ball right back to the Blazers. The Blazers would add one last score to hold on for the win.
Photobucket
(CHIEF DRAGON BREATH: BLAZER DEFENSIVE PLAYERS IMMOLATE CHIEF OSCEOLA'S PRE GAME RITUAL AFTER A HUGE FOURTH QUARTER SACK)

Josh Brown would lead the Blazers with 8 tackles, Bryan Ramsey, who replaced Timi McCollum for the game recorded two fourth quarter sacks, Terry Jackson also grabbed a sack for the defense.
"Its not how you start or wht you do in the middle, its how you finish, and out guys stepped up when it mattered and finished strong." defensive tackle Marcus Leak stated. He recorded 1.5 sacks and 4 tackles.
Next up is the home opener against Tennessee.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

#4 Cal (1-0) at #2 Texas (0-0)
  • In what some thought should've been last year's national championship Cal travels to Austin in a huge early season matchup. The Longhorns will bring in a heady rush attack but gone is Heisman winner Ryan Russ and kicked off is Sam Pace. New faces for Texas will see if they can handle the pressure. Cal was already challenged to the tune of OT win over BYU. Cal got big plays from receiver Justin Thomas and brings back key components defensively from last years national championship team. Experience will be key in this game.
