Orange crush the Deacons 10 - 33

(Syracuse, New York) - It wasn't a surprise that the touchdown favorite, Syracuse won. It was shocking how brutally the Deacons got beaten up by the Orangemen that has raised concern for the upcoming season. Coach Tyler Starks high speed offense got shut down early, after two consecutive red zone appearances were ended early thanks to Tanner Price interceptions. Whenever Wake Forest started to gain some momentum, the Orange would take control. The first two drives, it seemed that the field was wide open to the Deacon offense, but after those two early turnovers momentum ran dry. By the time Antwan Bailey crossed into the end zone for the first score of the game. Wake Forest fans were already settling into their seats for another upsetting game. The Orange and Deacons were considered somewhat evenly matched but a strong Orange showing has turned heads.

Tanner Price was brutalized and Josh Harris started to get hit in the backfield commonly. The issue was, the sacks commonly turned short plays into passing downs that ended up turning into Syracuse possessions. Than once the run became an option, the Orange were wrecking havoc in the backfield. Pinning them down and showing how dominant they could be.

Rattled and bruised, Tanner Price had his third mistake of the game, when he ran a QB Power off the goal line thanks to a great punt from Syracuse. Attempting to avoid a hit, Price went to slide but ended up taking a punishing hit that rattled the ball lose, Syracuse recovering nearly on the goal line. The only benefit that the defense has, they held Syracuse on a goal line set to only a field goal.

At half time, this was still a game, but the Orange crowd was electric and it was obvious that the Deacons were taking a beating. That beating took to heart in the second half, when the Deacons just fell flat. A 7 point game turned into a 17 point game and by the early fourth quarter, it was a 24 point game all but eliminating any hope of a Syracuse come back. If it was any consolation. The Deacons drove downfield on the staunt Syracuse defense and managed to toss in a late touchdown. Yet it was meaningless as the Orange held onto win, 33-10.

Tanner Price had a decent day, but his touchdown to interception ratio was what stood out, and his poor completion percentage attributed to a lot of hate for the young quarterback who many felt should've been benched, especially after the fumble. Josh Harris got called on for a dozen rushes, Tyler Starks had wished to run the ball twenty to thirty times, but that just didn't happen, down fast and commonly facing big yardage, the passing game came to the forefront and the inefficiencies came true.

Preseason favorite, Chris Givens didn't have the speed to properly separate him from his defender. The receivers muffed a lot of catches that were fairly routine and a few early injuries derailed the Deacon offense before it even got going. Next week will be no easier as they travel back to Winston-Salem for an Atlantic Coastal Conference game against the North Carolina State Wolfpack, if this one was a blowout, the stadium should be empty by halftime next week.

Coaches Comments: "It was embarrassing at times watching them play out there. We are going to have to hit the practice field hard this week in preparation for North Carolina State. They lost Russell Wilson, but they are still strong and we are only one of two teams in the ACC right now that are winless. We need to turn it around, it may only be week two but our problems are very real. Syracuse has talent but not to blow us out. If we play like that all season, we will be pushing around 60 points allowed while only barely touching double digits. For the upcoming game, I plan to establish the run early. It is the only way to get our passing game going and getting pressure off Tanner. We need to get them going out there, if we can get the ball moving on the ground we can make full use of a no huddle fast paced offense. When we become one dimensional is when we start to fall apart. Next week is a huge week for us. If we can at least keep it close, I'll be happy. If not, we are going to see some major changes coming."

Coaches Grades
QB - C - Tanner needs to work on his mechanics better and stop moving too much in the pocket. He began to scramble because he was taking too many hits and that's when he gets bad. Besides the one beautiful pass on the run, he was very inaccurate because he wouldn't plant his feet and throw.
HB - C+ - The running backs started out hot, but they cooled off fast, their momentum died fast and we had to stray away from the run when it wasn't getting us yards. They need to focus on hitting the holes. Harris is a small back, why he is running head on into defenders is beyond me. He needs to focus on running forward and following blocking assignments instead of trying to make plays on his own.
WR - C+ - Some played well, while some namely Chris Givens were non-existant. The receivers contributed to some of the issues for Tanner. When they got jammed they got held at the line for too long instead of actually beating it like they should've. We will need to work on coming off the line.
OL - F - These guys are running sprints. End of story. Not even a hundred rushing yards, five sacks and Tanner Price scrambling for his life is not a way to play football. They have to make their blocks, especially on blitzes. They couldn't pick up and recognize blitzes and it killed us.

Just a yard: Wake Forest falls a yard short of upset

One yard. something that will live on in the memory of these players for the rest of the year and in some cases for a long time after. Three separate occasions for the Deacons to put it away, but by some miracle, North Carolina State pulled it out. First coming late in the fourth, under a minute to go, on 3rd and goal, Tanner Price scrambled trying for the touchdown. As he went for the slide, he would take a hard hit and fumble it allowing North Carolina State to recover.

Heading into the first overtime, Wake Forest scored on the first play on a pitch off right tackle. With all momentum, the Deacons defense quickly pulled three downs away from North Carolina State. Yet they responded, on Imhoff pass to Payton, a 19 yard touchdown conversion, and it was tied yet again.

The second of the overtimes, two consecutive sacks of Imhoff, and an in completion later, fourth and forever and it would be Imhoff who would drop back and fire up a beautiful shot to Howard who would catch the ball on a dive into the end zone, firing up North Carolina State who snatched the lead heading into the second half.

The Deacons had to convert two fourth downs to get inside the red zone, mainly from the clutch play of Tanner Price. On first and goal, a run would be stopped in the backfield. Second and goal, a half back screen that would also be stopped in the backfield. Third and goal, a lazer to Chris Givens would be batted down by a linebacker who shifted into the proper zone at the right time. Fourth and goal, all of his receivers covered, Tanner Price would take off. Running through an opened hole up the middle, he made contact with a linebacer at the three and he fell forward. Two other Wolfpack players connected with Price who would fall on the goal line, the ball not crossing the plane. No touchdown. End of game, Wake Forest falling yet again.

A perfectly coached game by the Wake Forest coaching staff that was 13-13 late in the fourth ended up slipping away in a wave of disappointment and 'could have beens'. A rivalry victory would've been huge for this Deacon program that has been ailing. Tanner Price only completed a third of his throws, a disappointing 14-36 on the day with a mere 137 passing yards with an interception raising his season tally to 1 TD to 3 interceptions. Ted Stachitas who came in when Tanner Price suffered from Back Spasms, completed a huge touchdown pass to Danny Dembry at the end of the first half to tie it up at 10-10.

The Deacons will face Gardner-Webb in Wake Forest next week. Should be the first win for the Deacons who will have to face a brutal three game stretch afterwards. North Carolina State (#23) improves to 2-0 and will face South Alabama in what should become an ugly game in favor of the Wolfpack.

Behind running game, Wake Forest tears apart Gardner-Webb, drops 62

(Winston-Salem) - On their third try, Wake Forest picked up the first win of the season. A feeling that may be far and between in the upcoming weeks. With this game, the Deacons picked up 773 yards in the game, with the majority (486) coming in off the ground. It was an awe inspiring display that wasn't too shocking considering the circumstances. Gardner-Webb (0-3) came into this game with little expectations and took a throttling. Coming close to scoring as much as Virginia Tech (77) for the season high, this game will be something to remember for Tyler Starks who has now seen how effective his team could be. The bad side of things, Tanner Price threw three interceptions (2 TD - 3 INT) while completing only 50% of his passes. Coach Starks has said now that he will be exploring opening up his playbook to include some three wide receiver formations more often and work in more short passing options with short drop backs to get the ball out of Tanner Price's hands sooner.

Josh Harris surpassed 250 yards (254) on the day with a pair of touchdowns, while Brandon Pendergrass added 176 yards with three touchdowns. Tanner Price would also score two touchdowns on the ground, one on a Quarterback option, the other on a goal line QB Power play. Chris Givens had a break out game, catching seven passes for 153 yards and a single touchdown. He had only one catch coming into this game. "It felt good, I felt like I was back and was hitting my rhythm right. It felt natural again." Spoke Givens on the field.
