On the Recruiting Trail

On The Recruiting Trail

Miami Garden, Fl -
For new head coaches, putting together your first recruiting class, often in less than two months, is a mad scramble. For some, like Miami's Al Golden and Michigan's Brady Hoke, the transition also includes almost no crossover recruiting -- targeting players the coaches were already recruiting at their previous job -- so the evaluation and introduction processes can be thorny.

Golden, who came to UM from Temple, was unfamiliar with most of the prospects who were already on the Canes' recruiting board. With Temple being in the Northeast and in the MAC, most recruits considering Miami weren't going to pay the Owls' staff much attention. When Golden was announced as the new Miami head man on Dec. 13, most recruits responded to the news with a collective "Who?!"

On top of that, most of the recruits Randy Shannon's staff had landed bailed in the interim. By the time Golden moved into his new office, he had just two commitments on board, and quite frankly, the two that remained were shaky.

As Golden worked to assemble his new coaching staff -- his first wave of assistants included three of the defensive coaches he brought with him from Temple -- they evaluated the personnel remaining in the program during three practices the Hurricanes went through in preparation for the Sun Bowl. In addition, the new staff built their new recruiting board, while assessing that cornerback, QB, defensive line and linebacker were their biggest priorities. Among the first prospects they connected with were the recruits who were planning to enroll for the second semester, which meant the staff would return to campus from home visits just an hour before they hosted their first official visits.

The big-picture approach was to honor those commitments, but also be honest with those recruits about where the new staff saw them fitting in the program. One of the biggest mistakes a new coach makes is jumping at players his staff just doesn't have much of a feel for.

The Calm Before The Storm

The Calm Before The Storm

Miami Gardens, FL -
Under new University of Miami coach Al Golden, every sprint, squat and football drill performed during the team's off-season conditioning program is recorded.

Based on their performance, players are awarded a jersey in one of four colors. A black jersey is at the top of the ladder followed by green, orange and white.

"A white jersey means you're pretty much horrible and you need to step up your game," said senior linebacker Jordan Futch, who was wearing black.

Coaching changes have consequences. Under Golden - who was unimpressed by UM's conditioning under coach Randy Shannon - that has meant a torturous off-season program with a catchy name: UTough.

A warning from Golden: The workouts are going to get harder before they get easier. More than once since he took over for Shannon in mid-December, Golden has questioned the team's mental and physical toughness.

"We want to put them in difficult situations that cause them to unite and come together and not crack," said Golden, whose players will start spring practice March 5. "You push their threshold in terms of what they can handle."

To up the ante, Golden is basing his spring practice depth chart on the off-season conditioning program. Each Friday, strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey posts rankings for each position group on the locker-room wall.

"Are you beating the workout or are you letting the workout beat you?" Swasey asks his players.

A New Beginning

A New Beginning

CORAL GABLES, Fla.
The spring season officially started for the Miami Hurricanes football team on Saturday morning as the team laced up their cleats and buckled on their helmets for the first time in preparation for the 2011 season. No pads were worn. There was plenty of teaching and learning going on as a new system is being put in place.Intensity and focus were the themes as the program starts a new era under head coach Al Golden.

Saturday marked the first time that Al Golden and his staff got to coach the players on the football field. All assistant coaches, with the exception of Micheal Borrow, are new to Miami from last year.

Plenty of time was devoted throughout the day to giving the position coaches a chance to work their players as a group and as individuals. Spring is critical learning time, as the foundation is set for the upcoming season.

Golden told the media that all spots on the starting unit are up for grabs in the spring. “Players that prepare and practice the best will start the games,” he said.

Al Golden ran a very detailed practice with every drill allotted a certain amount of time. If a drill ran a little bit over, that was made up somewhere else. The coaches were on the players encouraging them to move quickly from drill to drill to stay on time and keep up the intensity. One of Golden’s goals is to have a focused and disciplined team out there every day.

There was very little wasted time as even the players on the sidelines were responsible for something. For example, during team work, there was the live offensive unit and then there was another 20 yards back that was fully lined up in the same formation. That secondary group would snap the ball and move on the cadence of the live group.

One of the biggest themes of the day was “play to the whistle.” The coaches repeatedly yelled that out to instill the message to the players.
