SHELL-SHOCKED
NASHVILLE, tn -- Following their blowout win over the Fordham Rams at home, with the team clicking on all cylinders, the Connecticut Huskies traveled to Nashville to play SEC-foe Vanderbilt.
The game started off well for the Huskies, as they took the opening kickoff down the field and scored on a 2-yard touchdown run by running back DJ Shoemate. After that, the game turned into a game of field position, as the teams punted back and forth to each other for about a quarter. This stretch was broken up by Vanderbilt, as Jonathan Krause was on the receiving end of a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Larry Smith to tie the game at 7 each.
Towards the end of the first half, the Huskies grabbed a 14-7 lead on a touchdown catch by wide receiver Michael Smith. However, Krause and the Commodores answered right back with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to close out the half with a tie score of 14-14.
In the second half, it was pretty much all Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt's Smith tossed three more touchdowns in the second half, including the second TD catch for Krause. Wide receiver Udom Umoh also caught two touchdowns for the 'Dores.
The Huskies were able to cut the Vanderbilt lead to seven points midway through the 4th quarter, but were unable to stop the Vanderbilt offense from scoring. Vandy added a late field goal to put them up by 10 and put the game out of reach.
The Huskies will look to bounce back from this early-season loss next week at home against Iowa State. ISU is win-less this season, dropping their first game to FCS Midwest and losing this week to rival Iowa in overtime.
