WEEK 1

@#11

Game Preview

Last season the Wisconsin Badgers had to play in 97 degree heat when they visited the UNLV Rebels whom they wore down with 278 rushing yards in route to a 41-21 victory.

In that win John Clay rushed for a team high 123 yards, now departed early to the NFL, Montee Ball and James White will have to make-up for his absence. No slouches themselves they rushed for 79 and 59 yards respectively in last year's contest. Also, Russell Wilson will make his Badger debut which has fans dreaming of a Big Ten Title if not the school's first National Championship.

Game Recap

Wisconsin drew first blood in the game when Russell Wilson found Jake Byrne for a 24 yard score. (7-0) UNLV followed up with a score of their own though it was only a 29 yard field goal. (7-3) Russell Wilson faked a hand-off on a play-action pass after running the two previous plays and connected with Jared Abbrederis for a 17 yard gain, after the catch Abbrederis took a huge hit from behind, forcing him to leave the game with a broken collarbone. Later in the drive Philip Welch connected on a 35 yard field goal to extend the Badger lead. (10-3) On the Badgers next possession Russell Wilson attempted to force a pass over the middle which was picked off, his only turnover of the day. The Rebels were not able to take advantage of the pick and went into the half trailing by 7.

The second half opened with a boom for the Badgers after forcing a three-and-out, Wilson found star wide receiver Nick Toon for a 40 yard gain down the side-line, which Wisconsin later capitalized on with a 9 yard option run to Montee Ball for a score. (17-3) On the first play after receiving the kickoff Rebels running back T. Cornett busted through an all-out blitz and scampered all the way to pay-dirt with a 74 yard touchdown. (17-10) Wisconsin's new quarterback Russell Wilson refused to allow his new team to be upset finding Byrne for a big 31 yard gain and later finding Nick Toon for 25 yard touchdown. (24-10) After forcing yet another three and out, Wilson made UNLV pay again by finding Nick Toon in the end-zone for a leaping catch. (31-10)

Going into the fourth quarter with a 21 point lead the Badgers asserted themselves as the dominant team with a long drive ending in a James White 6 yard TD. (38-10) UNLV's QB C. Herring used a play-action pass to take advantage of the un-expecting Badger D and lit them up for a 73 yard wide open bomb to M. Sullivan. (38-17) After recovering the onside kick, Wisconsin running back Montee Ball took a pitch for 30 yards that was followed by a 4 yard punch-in by James White for his second TD of the game. (45-17) UNLV closed out the scoring with a T. Cornett 7 yard run closing the game out with a score of 45-24.

Badgers 45 Rebels 24

Game-Changers

QB Russell Wilson 8/14 234 yards 3TD 1INT
HB James White 26 rush 107 yards 2TD
HB Montee Ball 15 rush 124 yards 1TD
WR Nick Toon 3 catches 109 yards 2 TD

T. Cornett 16 rush 112 yards 2TD

Post-Game Thoughts from Coach Bielema

"I thought that for the most part we played really good football on the offensive side of the ball anytime you put up 45 points you have to be doing something right. A lot of that credit goes to Coach Chryst and the players just executing the game plan. White and Ball both going for 100 yards is great and I'm encouraged by Russel's debut with 3 TDs.

Defensively, we have to be better letting up 201 rushing yards is unacceptable, no offense to UNLV but they aren't exactly a rushing machine so we need to sure up those mis-plays on that side of the ball."
