2011 Team Preview

Badgers #11 in Nation
The Wisconsin Badgers have been picked #11 in the Coaches' Poll for the 2011 season. The Badgers return some starters and also have a new star quarterback that could result in at least a Big Ten Championship and a berth to a BCS Bowl Game maybe even so far as a National Title appearance.

Bielema's Staff Sees Changes
Head Coach Bret Bielema has had to make a change at defensive coordinator this season following the departure of Dave Doeren to the head coaching position at Northern Illinois. Chris Ash was promoted from defensive backs coach to co-defensive coordinator as well Charlie Partridge being promoted to assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator as well as continuing to coach the defensive line.Paul Chryst will be returning as offensive coordinator this year though there is some speculation after a successful season this year he might be up for a head coaching gig.
New QB in Town
Former NC State starting quarterback Russell Wilson has transferred to the University of Wisconsin and is expected to be the starter for the Badgers this season. A QB competition could unfold should Jon Budmayr step up.
BIG TEN Undergoes Changes
With the addition of a twelfth team the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the BIG TEN Conference has split the teams into two divisions, the Leaders and Legends. In the Legends Division will be: Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Nebraska. The Leaders Divisions will consist of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, and Wisconsin. The winner of each division will play in the BIG TEN Championship that will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis the winner of the game will receive the Stagg-Paterno Trophy.

The predicted winner of the Legends Division is newcomer Nebraska.

2011 Roster Preview

OFFENSE

Quarterback

Starter-SR(RS) Russell Wilson(92)
"Wilson transferred in for one reason to start and bring at least a Big Ten Championship to Madison. Not your typical Badger quarterback. He's a dual threat QB who can beat you with his arm and his feet."

Backup-SO(RS) Jon Budmayr(83)
"Budmayr came out of spring practice as the Badgers starting QB, he'll sit behind another more experienced quarterback this year. If everything goes to plan he'll be starting next year and should provide solid leadership"

Running Back

Starter-1A SO James White(91)
"White led the Badgers in rushing yards last year with 1,052 and 14 TDs. Don't expect anything different this year with the departure of John Clay, White's carries will increase."

Starter-1B JR Montee Ball(90)
"Ball is the more traditional Badger running back he's big 236lbs and would rather go through than around you. He was four yards shy of 1,000 last year a mark he should easily surpass this season. He also led the Badgers in rushing TDs with 18 there should be more now that Clay is gone."

Back-up-SO(RS) Kyle Zuleger(76)
"Zuleger probably won't see too many carries at most he will get 20 this year and seems to be a career back-up."

Future-FR Melvin Gordon(red-shirting)(73)
"Gordon isn't very big only 185lbs but he has the speed to out-run defenders if Wisconsin can add another power-back in this years recruiting class Gordon will be the perfect compliment."

Full Back

Starter- SR Bradie Ewing(79)
"Ewing isn't a huge bruising blocking back but he does have some decent receiving skills still he is able to get the job done in the run game and will be missed next season."

Back-up-SO Jason Hengel(67)
"Hengel is more of a big half-back than a full-back in order to start next year he needs to work on his blocking."

Wide Receivers

SR(RS)6'3 Nick Toon(90), SO(RS)6'2 Jared Abbrederis(83), SO(RS)6'0 Jeff Duckworth(79), SO 6'5 Chase Hammond(74), FR(RS)6'4 Marquis Mason(72)

"Toon is the obvious star although he is coming back from an injury this year so he has a lot to prove. Abbrederis and Duckworth are both guys who can be solid but most likely won't ever be stars themselves. Hammond and Mason though could be special in a few years with their size if they are able to develop we could see a monster passing game from the Badgers in a few years."

Tight Ends

Starter-SR Jake Byrne(84)
"Byrne is a great blocker and should help the line pave a way for Wisconsin's backs."

Back-ups
SO(RS) Jacob Pedersen(79)
"Pedersen is a typical Badger tight end they produce every few years he can help in the run game but is a true threat in the passing game."

SO(RS) Brian Wozniak(78)
"Wozniak is the other end of Pedersen. He's a blocker and in a year or two these two will be a formidable duo."

Offensive Line

LT JR(RS) Ricky Wagner(86), SO(RS) Casey Dean(84), LG SR Travis Frederick(82), C JR(RS) Peter Konz(89), SO(RS) Ryan Groy(87), RG SR Kevin Zeitler(93), RT SR(RS) Josh Oglesby (92)

"A monster line is always a staple for Wisconsin and that's no different this year. The right side is obviously the stronger side with 2 NFL ready players in Zeitler and Oglesby. This group should pave way for 2 1,000 yard rushers again this year."

DEFENSE

Defensive Ends

LE SR(RS) Louis Nzegwu(85), SO(RS) Tyler Dippel (79), RE JR David Gilbert(82), SO(RS) Pat Muldoon(77)

"Losing J.J. Watt will be tough to replace but not impossible Nzegwu and Gilbert are both solid against the run but need to get more of a rush. Dippel and Muldoon will need to be able to come in and spell them against some of the run heavy teams of the BIG TEN."

Defensive Tackle

SR(RS) Patrick Butrym (89), SO(RS) Jordan Kohout(85), SO(RS) Ethan Hemer (83)

"Butrym could become the star of the D if he is able to build off of last year. Kohout and Hemer should both see time and could be future stars in a few years."

Linebacker

LOLB SR Kevin Claxton(84), Conor O'Neill(80), MLB JR Chris Borland (87), SO(RS) Ethan Armstrong(80), FR(RS) Marcus Trotter(72), ROLB JR(RS) Mike Taylor(86), SO(RS) A.J. Fenton(82)

"The Badgers have a strong line-backing corp Claxton, Borland, and Taylor are definitely the starters but the others should make an impact on special teams also should any of the starters go down they have back-ups that should not be much of a let down."

Cornerback

Starters
SR Antonio Fenelus(89)
"Fenelus is the best cover corner on the team and he plays the best zone. He's also able to be very physical at the line and can deliver the big hit when needed"

SR Devin Smith(84)
"Luckily for Smith, Fenelus is covering the opposition's best man but that's not to say Smith is a bad player he matches up well against any team's second receiver."

Nickel-back
JR(RS) Marcus Cromartie(78)
"Cromartie is a great nickel corner he's able to move pretty quickly and also has size to be able to knock the ball down going over the middle."

Free Safety

Starter-SR(RS) Aaron Henry(86)
"Henry has the speed to be able to play deep center-field and help in the passing game, his coverage skills are good enough that if needed he could man up on opposing receivers and not be a liability."

Back-up-SO Darius Feaster(79)
"Feaster has a lot to learn about defensive schemes but one thing he is great at is that he may actually be better in coverage than Henry is."

Strong Safety

Starter-JR(RS) Shelton Johnson(83)
"Johnson lacks size at 6 foot 180lbs but he makes up for that with tenacity, he's not afraid to step up against a bigger back or tight end and make a stop."

Back-up-SO(RS) Dezmen Southward(77)
"Southward needs to work on his tackling in order to make an impact a few years down the road though he should be a solid special teams player this season."

SPECIAL TEAMS
Kicker-SR(RS) Philip Welch(84)
"Welch is solid, nothing spectacular but he is dependable on kicks that are inside his range."

Punter/Place-kicker-SR Brad Nortman(86)
"Nortman has a pretty strong leg that should be able to be used as a strategic weapon to win many field position battles."
