Re: Don't Mess With Tradition - krulmichael's Michigan Wolverines (NCAA12)
Week 2 - Game Report #10 Michigan Wolverines (0-0) (0-0) at #1 Alabama Crimson Tide (0-0) (0-0) Breaking Their Tuscaloosa Heart It's a Game of Inches on the Field...and in the Air Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - After being finalized almost 2 years ago, the date has finally arrived. September 1st, 2012, which means two of the winningest teams in college football clash against each other, the #10 Michigan Wolverines face off against the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide in what could already play a role in the National Championship game at the end of the season. On a beautiful afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (since neutral sites aren't in yet...otherwise it'd be Dallas Stadium, just saying), two teams with high hopes clash with what already has a bowl game feel to it. The game didn't start off well for the Wolverines as they punted the ball to Bama after a quick 3 and out that led to two big 3rd and long gaffs that led to a 65 yard touchdown drive by the Crimson Tide for the early 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Crimson Tide ended up having a defense lapse of their own at the start of the 2nd quarter as on 3rd and 8 from their own 40, they somehow seemed to forget who was lining up at quarterback for the Wolverines as Denard Robinson came out in a 5 wide shotgun set, saw that there was no one in the middle after the 4-man rush and audibled down to a QB draw and ran straight up the gut untouched for the 40 yard touchdown to tie the game right back up, 7-7. Both teams were pretty much deadlocked for the remained for the first half before Bama tacked on 3 points and a hail mary attempt to the endzone by the Wolverines was swatted down for a 10-7 Alabama lead at halftime. The 3rd quarter would lead to some exciting defense as both teams turned the ball over before redshirt Junior QB A.J. McCarron threw his second pick of the day as redshirt Sophomore CB Terrence Talbot jumped in front of the receiver to pick it off with nothing but 70 yards of daylight ahead of him giving Michigan their first lead of the day, 14-10. It didn't take too long for the Tide to get up by a touchdown again though as the next drive they settled for 3 points before stopping the Wolverines on a 3 and out which led to another big drive, only this time capped off by a touchdown pass followed by a 2 point conversion. 21-14 Alabama at the end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter started off with a bang as McCarron threw his 3rd interception of the game, this time to redshirt Senior CB J.T. Floyd giving Michigan's offense the ball at their own 42 yard line. On the first play of the new drive, Denard faked the handoff to Senior HB Vincent Smith and rolled out right under pressure, heaved a bomb all the way to the endzone to his good buddy Senior WR Roy Roundtree for the 57 yard tying touchdown! That's exactly what the duo came back to do this season as it's a ballgame again with 7 minutes remaining, 21-21. Later in the 4th both quarterbacks traded back to back interceptions (Denard's 1st, McCarron's 4th) with Michigan's offense finally driving down field late attempting a 40 yard kick with Sophomore K Matt Wile, who struggled last season from distance. The snap & hold were good as Wile kicked a line drive past the uprights for the 3 points, Wolverines leading 24-21 now with 2 minutes remaining in the game. Bama's offense trotted onto the field as McCarron threw 3 straight incomplete passes leading to a do or die 4th down. From the shotgun set, McCaron took the snapp, bounced around in the pocket a bit and just before getting drilled heaved up a 43 yard pass that ended up being a jump ball one on one on the sidelines....CAUGHT by true Freshman and Michigan native WR Derek Butler, oh my! Now another incompletion and a loss of 1 on a run, McCarron drilled his receiver for 10 yards, but faced a 4th and 1 with 44 seconds remaining. Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban decided to bring out the field goal unit before Coach Kleinbauer called a timeout perhaps to ice the kicker and prepare his defense for any fakes. Both teams trotted back onto the field before Junior K Cade Foster took the kick as it went up, sailing for what seemed like an eternity...further to the right, further...it hits off the post and bounces into the endzone! NO GOOD! Foster missed a 30 yard field goal as a camera of both head coaches pops up with Saban showing a face of disappointment and disbelief as Kleinbauer has a huge grin giving a fist pump. What a game and what a huge victory for Coach Kleinbauer and his Michigan Wolverines. Arguably the hardest test of the season came early and they survived, but can they keep winning and make it to the National Title? That remains to be seen, but one helluva way to jumpstart the journey! #10 Michigan takes down #1 Alabama 24-21.
