Re: The Dallas Cowboys

MILLER, TANNER RUN COWBOYS TO VICTORY

ARLINGTON, TX - The Dallas Cowboys opened up the 2011 NFL Preseason in winning fashion on Thursday night, upending the visiting Denver Broncos by the final count of 34 to 21.

The starters for the Cowboys appeared to show little rust, marching right now the field in their one drive of action. Tony Romo completed his only two pass attempts and scored on a touchdown connection with Jason Witten to open scoring in the game before taking a seat to let reserves play. Felix Jones also appeared to perform fairly effectively, picking up 28 yards on six carries.

While the backups were in play for both teams, the game did turn into a rather sloppy one. The teams combined for 18 total sacks, many of those a result of either quarterbacks panicking in the pocket and scrambling haphazardly (Tim Tebow) or taking too long in the pocket to make reads (Tom Brandstater). Two Cowboys reserve running backs - Lonyae Miller and Phillip Tanner - both played effectively in this time, however, each logging nearly fifty yards on limited carries. The Cowboys' pass defense did surrender many passing yards to the Broncos' quarterbacks, but the constant pressure caused many mistakes to the tune of five interceptions thrown by the Broncos.

The Cowboys, now 1-0 in the preseason, will move on to face the San Diego Chargers in more preseason action next week.

Re: The Dallas Cowboys

BUEHLER BOOTS BOLTS

ARLINGTON, TX - Much-maligned Cowboys' kicker David Buehler finally got a taste of coming through in the big moments this week against the San Diego Chargers, booting a successful 40-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Cowboys over the San Diego Chargers by the count of 33 to 31.

Buehler's game-winner was set up by a 66-yard desperation heave from Stephen McGee to receiver Jesse Holley, who somehow managed to come down with the pass after a couple of bobbles in a sea of Chargers' defenders.

"It was a crazy play," Holley said of his catch. "Honestly, Steve [McGee] probably shouldn't have thrown the ball my way, but everyone in the secondary was playing deep, the ball bounced my way, and I was able to make a play." He also laughed "Lady Luck was shining on us on that play!"

Buehler's 3-for-3 kicking performance pulls him back even with rookie Dan Bailey for hold of the Cowboys' lone job at kicker; both are now 3-for-4 on the preseason.

For the day, the most impressive performance amongst those fighting for roster spots was had by receiver Dwayne Harris, who caught six passes for 62 yards, all in the second half, and he showed a knack for breaking tackles and getting downfield as well. Though he has yet to start a game, Harris and teammate Kevin Ogletree are in a dead heat for the job at starting slot receiver.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, running back Demarco Murray seemed to be having trouble getting anything going on this day; he finished with only 15 yards on eight carries, and though he caught four passes he could only add 21 more yards through the air.

Asked about his performance after the game, Cowboys' head coach Jason Garrett remained confident in Murray. "I think he was a bit tentative out there today, sure," he said. "That said, he's still got a bit of time to get a feel for how things are going and to get his confidence up. I think with another good week of practice that he'll be more ready to contribute this upcoming week and certainly in time for the regular season."

Finally, two injuries hit the Cowboys on this day: fifth-round draft choice CB Josh Thomas will miss the season after being placed on Injured Reserve with a broken forearm, and reserve linebacker Victor Butler suffered a herniated disk and will miss seven weeks of games.

The Cowboys travel to Minneapolis next week to take on Donovan McNabb and the Minnesota Vikings in the "dress rehearsal" preseason game.

Re: The Dallas Cowboys

AROUND THE LEAGUE

  • If Madden NFL 12 cover athlete and Cleveland Browns RB Peyton Hillis are to get to the playoffs this season, they will have to do so without contributions of two of the key cogs of their team. All-Pro OL Joe Thomas will miss the entire season on Injured Reserve, as he suffered a broken tibia this week against Detroit. Teammate and fellow OL Eric Steinbach will miss eight to ten weeks with a broken hand as well.
  • Though it's still too early to draw any firm conclusions, the early returns indicate that Dolphins QB Chad Henne will thrive in Brian Daboll's new offense. In limited action across two games, Henne has tossed passes for 451 yards, four touchdowns, and just one interception. Further, his current pass completion percentage (63%) and yards-per-attempt (7.1) are above his career highs. Obviously the regular season grind will prove Henne more than any preseason action will, but the early results look promising.
  • Wade Phillips has the Houston Texans' new 3-4 defense firing on all cylinders already. OLB Marion Williams, Brooks Reed, and Connor Barwin have already racked up a combined 11.5 sacks in limited action. Reed in particular has been the most impressive, collecting 5.5 of the combined total. Though there is still work to be done - the Texans currently rank 15th in total yards allowed and has only forced three turnovers - there are certainly signs of improvement to build upon.

Re: The Dallas Cowboys

DALLAS DEFENSE DOMINATES

MINNEAPOLIS, MN- In what was an overly sloppy first half of offense by both teams' starting units, a combination of turnover margin, field position, and big plays was the key difference in separating the Dallas Cowboys from the Minnesota Vikings early, and the Cowboys' reserved added to the lead in the second half as they demolished their hosts, 41 to 7.

Both quarterbacks struggled to get on track in this dress rehearsal. Tony Romo of the Cowboys had a mediocre outing, completing only 13 of 23 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions. He did, however, toss one touchdown to Jason Witten late in the second quarter to redeem his day a tad. Vikings' passer Donovan McNabb fared much worse, completing only 10 of 23 passes for 97 yards with three picks, one of which Cowboys' CB Mike Jenkins took for a score.

Turnovers would continue to haunt the Vikings through the second half. On top of the three giveaways by McNabb, Vikings' runners lost two fumbles, muffed a punt return, and Joe Webb threw a pick late for good measure. The Cowboys also struggled with turnovers on their end, with runner Lonyae Miller coughing up the ball in the fourth and quarterback Stephen McGee tossing up an interception.

On the bright side for the Cowboys, Felix Jones continued to perform well, running for 74 yards on 11 carries, including a 38 yard touchdown scamper. Reserves Tashard Choice and Phillip Tanner both also added 43 and 48 yards each, respectively, with Tanner adding another score.

The Cowboys, now 3-0 on the preseason, will conclude their slate of exhibition games next week in Miami as they take on the Dolphins.
