Re: The Dallas Cowboys

OUTGAINED, BUT NOT OUTSCORED

ARLINGTON, TX - The Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions battled tooth-and-nail for three quarters this Sunday afternoon, with the Cowboys leading by only three prior to the final period. Following a Felix Jones 1-yard touchdown plunge, however, young Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford seemed to fold to the pressure, throwing three late interceptions to seal the Cowboys' victory, 33 to 17.

What kept the Lions in the game through that much time was the ability of their offense to move the ball up and down the field and, unlike previous Cowboys' opponents, Detroit actually matched their hosts in time of possession. Jahvid Best paced the Lions' offensive production with 159 yards and a score on 33 carries, all game-highs. Though the Cowboys' defense succeeded in taking prolific receiver Calvin Johnson out of the game - he'd finish with only 41 yards on two catches - other skill players were able to pick up the slack; receiver Maurice Stovall grabbed seven balls for 120 yards, and tight end Brandon Pettigrew gave the Cowboys fits over the middle, catching seven passes for 59 yards, with many of those catches resulting in first downs and one resulting in a touchdown.

For the Cowboys, big plays all around separated them from their competition. Tony Romo was quite efficient, posting a quarterback rating of 123.0, throwing only six incompletions, and no interceptions. He also threw two scores including a 48-yard bomb to Miles Austin early in the first quarter. Defensive end Marcus Spears had a career day, collecting two sacks, both on key third downs. Demarcus Ware, showing unusually strong skills in coverage today on his rare dropbacks into zone defense, picked off a pass, and teammate Orlando Scandrick continued his blazing start by picking off two later in the fourth quarter as the Lions tried to force the ball down the field with the clock working against them. Even David Buehler got in on the big play action, connecting on three field goals from 50 yards out or further.

The Dallas Cowboys, now 3-1 on the season, will enjoy a bye week to lick their few injury wounds before continuing down a long backstretch of the season.

Offensive Analysis: Barring one disastrous, turnover-laden game against San Francisco, the Cowboys' offense has arguably been the best in the league. Tony Romo seems to have found his groove, connecting on passes all over the field at a very high clip and, other than the San Francisco game, minimizing turnovers. He's also spreading the ball around amongst the team's established talent and young players in the process, giving many an opportunity to make plays. Of note, the Cowboys appear to have moved away from two tight end sets in favor of multiple receiver sets, based on the production of receivers Kevin Ogletree and Dwayne Harris. As a byproduct, opportunities in the passing game for tight ends Martellus Bennett and John Phillips have fallen off significantly.

The biggest surprise on the offense undoubtedly has been the play of the offensive line. Though not perfect, they've done reasonably well giving Tony Romo time to look downfield to move the football. More notably, they've created all sorts of running room for Felix Jones, who has more than taken advantage of his additional opportunities as the Cowboys' primary running back. The team may look to distribute his workload more in coming weeks to others on the roster - Demarco Murray looks plenty capable even if he hasn't established himself as a home-run threat - as Jones is currently on pace for 416 total touches through the regular season, which would push him beyond seasonal workloads of even the established workhorses such as Michael Turner of the Falcons and Adrian Peterson of the Vikings.

Defensive Analysis: This unit is still very much a work-in-progress. The two biggest surprises easily have been DE Marcus Spears, who has already set a career high in sacks with 5, and CB Orlando Scandrick who bumped teammate Mike Jenkins out of a starting role and has played tremendously, as he currently holds the league-high in interceptions with six. Other younger players have also made solid contributions; Sean Lee, while learning on the job, is beginning to come into his own as the team's primary inside linebacker, and reserve safety Barry Church has been very effective in limited action.

On the downside, the play in coverage of the team's starting safeties - any combination of Abram Elam, Gerald Sensabaugh, and Alan Ball - has been quite poorly, with the worst game obviously being against the 49ers in which they all were abused repeatedly. The linebackers have not provided anything better in coverage across the short middle of the field in this regard, and to that in Dallas current endures having the (statistically-speaking) worst pass defense in the league to this point. The play of Anthony Spencer in particular is a bit concerning; though he's been solid in run support, he has yet to generate any significant pressure on the quarterback this season, his contract year.

Special Teams Analysis: Dallas continues to enjoy a solid-not-spectacular return game; Jason Garrett's resistance to playing playmaker Dez Bryant on kick return arguably contributes to this. The surprise here has been the play of kicker David Buehler, who after barely winning the job in training camp has been on fire. He has yet to miss a kick this season and is quite confident in himself right now after having just nailed three 50-yard bombs in one game. Mat McBriar seems to be in a bit of a funk, as his punting numbers are way down so far this season, but he is among league leaders in punts downed inside the 20-yard line. He has plenty of time to turn his play around.

Overall Impression: Assuming nothing changes, Dallas will be in contention for a playoff spot simply due to their offense, which is posting great numbers. Defensively, however, the team must improve by leaps and bounds, particularly in the passing game, if they want to make it to Indianapolis in February.

Despite a season-ending injury to franchise quarterback Matt Ryan and significant injuries to receiver Julio Jones and Harry Douglas, as well as cornerback Dunta Robinson, the Atlanta Falcons find themselves undefeated through five games and the established leaders of the NFC South. Head coach Mike Smith has been able to maintain stability on the offensive side of the ball using a combination of conventional and bizarre tactics. The conventional wisdom foremost, feature back Michael Turner has seen a hefty 104 carries, but is enjoying a bit of a fountain-of-youth moment as he has already amassed 605 yards and five scores, good for 5.8 yards a carry and 121 yards a game. As for the more bizarre feature of the offense, Smith has inexplicably found success rotating backup quarterbacks Chris Redman and John Parker Wilson; each has seen significant action in the four games that Ryan has missed, with Redman has started each game, and the two have combined for over 900 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and just two interceptions. Helping the offense out significantly is cornerback Brent Grimes, who has posted an league-leading and staggering seven interceptions through the first quarter of the season, helping the Falcons to their current status as having the second-best turnover margin in the league.

After struggling on defense due to an long-term injury to free agent acquisition linebacker Paul Poslusny as well as a season-ending injury to fellow linebacker Daryl Smith, the Jaguars went to the free agent wire once again to shore up an ailing defense. The team agreed to one-year deals with veteran linebackers Kirk Morrison and Gerald Hayes. Hayes last played with the Cardinals in 2010, while Morrison returns to the Jaguars after not being retained following last season. The two moves help to stabilize the defense enough for the team's first win of the season in overtime against Cincinnati. The poor play of veteran quarterback David Garrard has been the biggest disappointment of the team so far, however, with Garrard having already thrown six interceptions on the season. Chatter about playing rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert is picking up quickly, with rumors circulating that head coach Jack Del Rio will make the switch as early as this week.

Another team with a quarterback situation to watch is the Miami Dolphins. Quarterback Chad Henne is having a trying season in offensive coordinator Brian Daboll's new scheme, and though he's only committed two turnovers the fourth-year man out of Michigan has only completed 50% of his passes on the season and has failed to record a touchdown pass in two of his four games. Worse yet, the only win Miami has this season from their week three matchup against Cleveland, in which Henne was knocked out of the game on the first play due to concussion-like symptoms following a particularly hard hit from safety T.J. Ward. Free agent acquisition Matt Moore played excellent in relief, throwing three touchdown passes and compiling nearly 300 yards in the air. Head coach Tony Sparano is holding his cards close to his vest regarding which passer will play this week against the New York Jets, but either way the pressure is squarely on Sparano to win now.

Game Notes
The Patriots have endured some team struggles in the early portions of the season, coping with an injury that sideline quarterback Tom Brady for two games. The offense as a result struggled to find a rhythm early, but the team appears to be back on track after Brady returned and posted a 300-yard, 3-touchdown effort against the New York Jets. New England is certainly hungry for a victory here as well, as they surprisingly trail the Buffalo Bills for the lead in the AFC East by two games.

The Dallas Cowboys once again will be shuffling safeties, but this time they will do so as a result of an injury. Veteran Abram Elam suffered a partially torn shoulder labrum in the third quarter against Detroit, and while he is expected to recover and continue to contribute this season, but he will need some time to recover. Expect both Alan Ball and Barry Church to get opportunities to fill the vacancy, with the more versatile Gerald Sensabaugh changing sides of the defense depending on which of the two is in the game.

One of the more talked-about moves of the offseason, the season has not gone as planned for DT Albert Haynesworth. Coming into the season looking for a career revival, the ten-year veteran has instead barely seen the field in Foxboro. Haynesworth has recorded just one tackle on the season, and currently sits fourth on the depth chart behind sixth-year man Mike Wright and eleven-year veteran Gerard Warren. Barring a sudden change, Haynesworth's days in the NFL could be numbered.

Re: The Dallas Cowboys

SPEARHEADED SLUGFEST

FOXBORO, MA - In a scenario and result that few expected, the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots went toe-to-toe in a heavyweight slugfest, trading blows throughout the game. The team's two excellent quarterbacks went toe-to-toe, both performing reasonably well but not enjoying overwhelming success thanks to strong opposing defense.

At the end of the day, it was the efforts of defensive end Marcus Spears, who put together a stellar four-sack effort, which gave the Cowboys enough breathing room to keep the Patriots at bay, 13 to 9.

Field position was vital throughout the game, and the Cowboys got the better end of that battle. While New England never mustered any significant yardage in special teams thanks in part to the strong legs of David Buehler and Mat McBriar, the Cowboys' own return unit performed well enough, gaining over 100 yards of field position over the course of the game. A more obvious difference between the two teams was the focus on and success of their respective running games, with the Pats struggling to muster anything and the Cowboys finding what is becoming business-as-usual with Felix Jones, who posted another 100-yard effort. Jones got the bulk of the workload for the Cowboys in this game, as Demarco Murray left the game midway through with a stinger.

The one touchdown of the game came in the second quarter on a medium-range corner strike from Tony Romo to Kevin Ogletree, who worked himself open against former Virginia teammate and Patriots rookie cornerback Ras-I Dowling. That turned out to be the one play where there was any room downfield in the passing game for either quarterback. Patriots receiver Chad Ochocinco led all receivers with 13 catches for 109 yards through three quarters, but left early in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return.

Now 4-1, the Dallas Cowboys will return home next week, looking to build off a strong defensive effort as they host the young and hungry St Louis Rams.
