NCAA 2012: University of Washington Huskies

I'll be acting as Head Coach Steve Sarkisian. I know it's fun to try and bring a smaller school from the ground up, but I have a short attention span at times and don't feel any real obligation to those dynasties, so I'm going to play as my former school and team in my hometown, the Washington Huskies. Not a great team, not a terrible team, but should be a bit of a challenge in the Pac-12.

Settings
Platform: Xbox 360
Rosters: CK11
Sliders: Matt10
Difficulty: Heisman
Rules: Simulation-style, use actual playbook, basically play real football. Only recruit in pipeline/border states and/or players with Washington in their top 10.
Quarters: 10 minutes

Most everyone knows about the previews for 2011 so far, so I'll go through that quickly just to get a layout in then move on to the team/coach previews and the season.

Re: NCAA 2012: University of Washington Huskies

Steve Sarkisian
2009: 5-7 (4-5 Pac-10, 7th place)
2010: 7-6 (5-4 Pac-10, tied 3rd place), beat Nebraska 19-7 in Holiday Bowl
Total: 12-13 (9-9), 1-0 in bowls

Previous experience
  • Played at BYU, 1995-1996.
  • Played for Saskatchewan Roughriders (CFL), 1997-1999.
  • Quarterbacks coach at El Camino Junior College, 2000.
  • Offensive assistant at Southern Cal, 2001.
  • Quarterbacks coach at Southern Cal, 2002-2003.
  • Quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders, 2004.
  • Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Southern Cal, 2005-2008.

Sarkisian, hired to be UW's head coach on December 8, 2008, has led the Huskies to marked improvement in all facets of the game, but most effectively in wins and losses. Washington had gone 0-12 in 2008 (11-37 overall from 2005-2008 under Tyrone Willingham) and 7-16 with coach Keith Gilbertson from 2003-2004. In those six seasons, UW was just 18-53 without a single bowl appearance.

After a five-win improvement to 5-7 in 2009, Sarkisian led the Huskies to their first postseason bowl game since the 2002 Sun Bowl and their first bowl victory since the 2001 Rose Bowl. He prefers to run a pro-style offense and call his own plays with input from current offensive coordinator/QB coach Doug Nussmeier and runs a 4-3 defense and allows Nick Holt to handle most all duties on that unit.

4Derrick Brown 6-3225FrMurrieta, CA 6783 thp, 78 tha, 60 spd, 61 acc
The Skinny: Life after Jake Locker begins with Keith Price, who started one game in place of the injured Locker. Unfortunately, he was thrown into the fire at Autzen Stadium against the #1 Oregon Ducks, where he went 14-28 for 127 yards, a TD, and no interceptions. Touted Nick Montana lost the competition for the starting gig during spring practice, but is waiting in the wings should Price falter.

35Dezden Petty 6-2230FrGardena, CA6774 spd, 66 btk, 71 rbk, 68 pbk
The Skinny: Chris Polk is one of the most unheralded backs in the country, coming off a 1,415-yard season, which concluded with 284 yards against the rival Cougars and 177 yards against Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. He may not have breakaway speed, but churns out the tough yards consistently. Callier and Cooper provide a bit of a change of pace with their speed and cutting ability. Fogerson missed most of 2010 due to injury, but provides good size and receiving ability out of the backfield. Sankey could challenge to help out the Huskies’ return teams. Jonathan Amosa is a former walk-on linebacker moved to provide depth after graduation, injury, and transfer depleted the fullback position. He won’t be expected to touch the ball too often.

82Josh Perkins 6-3200FrCerritos, CA 6687 spd, 78 acc, 71 cth, 76 rte
The Skinny: Kearse and Aguilar will be one of the top starting tandems in the conference. Jermaine Kearse is a big-play threat who had games of four TDs vs. Oregon State and three TDs against Syracuse. Kasen Williams was the first player from the state of Washington to be named MaxPrep.com’s National Athlete of the Year. Kevin Smith showed a lot of quickness in the return game last year as a freshman and will look to translate that into the passing game this year. Cody Bruns can run, throw, and catch as a jack-of-all-trades, while James Johnson looks to bounce back to the form he showed as a true freshman when he caught 39 passes.

81Marlion Barnett6-2215So*Corona, CA 6983 spd, 73 cth, 71 cit, 59 rbk
The Skinny: Hartvigson and Seferian-Jenkins are both big bodied tight ends who are equally adept at getting off the line to catch passes and clearing out defenders to open holes in the running game. After a lack of production from the position in 2010, the Huskies appear to be well-equipped to run a lot of two-tight end sets this season.

The Skinny: Kelemete is a potential all-conference performer and was named one of team captains for 2010, and likely will again in 2011. Ben Riva impressed the coaching staff with his smarts and run blocking and appears to have beaten out Skyler Fancher for the right tackle job. Hatchie shows a lot of promise, and will have an opportunity to improve his understanding of his assignments.

78Mike Criste6-5280Fr*Mission Viejo, CA 7058 awr, 76 pbk, 75 rbk, 82 str
The Skinny: Kohler and Porter were both touted freshmen who got some time in the lineup last year and look primed to start the next three years. Atoe, Tanigawa, and Criste are all redshirt freshman who provide depth in a very young position for the Dawgs.

The Skinny: Schaefer did a solid job in his first year as a starter in 2010 and will look to improve on that. Kanczugowski saw a lot of action as a blocking tight end last season, but has yet to log much time on the offensive line.

93Andrew Hudson6-3231Fr*Redlands, CA6580 acc, 72 str, 74 tkl, 69 bsh
The Skinny: Jamora was a revelation to UW last year, starting the final seven games and totaling 39 tackles and 8 TFL. Everrette Thompson has split time at DE and DT over the past three years but will spend most of his time at RE. Shirley was impressive as a speed rusher off the edge during his redshirt year and in spring practice and may see spot duty on passing downs. Crichton has logged 10 starts over the past two years and provides good depth.

71Danny Shelton 6-3300FrAuburn, WA 7274 acc, 82 str, 73 tkl, 76 bsh
The Skinny: Ta’amu is the boulder in the middle of the Husky defense. If he can continue to improve on his 2010 season, he should be on the All-Pac-12 team. Potoa’e, Tokolahi, and Lagafuaina will all rotate at the other tackle spot, depending on the matchups presented. Shleton is a four-star recruit that will redshirt to improve with the current depth at DT.

10John Timu 6-1205FrLong Beach, CA7074 spd, 70 awr, 80 tkl, 75 bsh
The Skinny: Another extremely young position for Washington, as they lost Mason Foster (the nation’s second leading tackler in 2010) and Victor Aiyewa, who led the Pac-10 in tackles for loss last year, to graduation. Fuimaono and Gilliland each started one game as true freshmen injury replacements last year and have the lead to start full-time in 2011. Wallace, Kearse, and Pelleur are all close behind and could challenge for their own playing time while helping out on special teams.

54Tim Tucker6-1221So*Harbor City, CA6976 spd, 64 awr, 76 tkl, 73 bsh
The Skinny: Cort Dennison will be the undisputed leader of the linebacking corps. He has the size, speed, smarts, and tackling ability to possibly lead the conference in stops. Tutogi is a junior college transfer with three years of eligibility left who could also challenge for playing time at one of the OLB spots.

34Marcus Peters 6-1174FrOakland, CA 6886 spd, 71 mcv, 72 zcv, 60 tkl
The Skinny: Trufant and Richardson improved by leaps and bounds as last season wore on and give the Huskies two experienced corners who can play man-to-man when defensive coordinator Nick Holt decides to blitz. Ducre had a few good moments as a freshman, while Long and Gobern have not provided much outside of special teams coverage. Sims is another junior college transfer that was recruited as an athlete and could also see time at QB or WR eventually.

The Skinny: Nate Fellner notched five interceptions and 79 tackles in 2010, starting all 13 games as a sophomore. Sean Parker was a highly anticipated recruit who acted as the nickel back and will replace three-year starter Nate Williams at strong safety. He’ll see competition from Will Shamburger and Taz Stevenson at that spot. Justin Glenn was a big contributor in 2009 until breaking his leg at Notre Dame and looks to get back to that form after fully recovering.

The Skinny: Folk has made several big kicks in his two years as the UW placekicker, including game winners in each of the last two contests with USC. He’s 31-of-41 on FGs in his career. Rasp replaced the injured Will Mahan admirably with a 43.8-yard average last year.

Re: NCAA 2012: University of Washington Huskies

2011 Raise the Woof! Celebration

Seattle Times Husky Football
Date: August 26, 2011
Seattle, WA

The Huskies kick off the 2011 season in their own special way, inviting players, coaches, and supporters of the program together for an evening of dinner, drinks, questions, answers, and announcements.

Among the announcements were the captains for your 2011 Washington Huskies: junior tailback Chris Polk, senior tackle Senio Kelemete, senior defensive tackle Alameda Ta'amu, and senior middle linebacker Cort Dennison. While the players were not available for interviews, head coach Steve Sarkisian fielded several questions:

On his feelings for what kind of team this will be heading into 2011:
Well, we feel like down the stretch to close last year, we played really sound defensive football and were able to run the ball. If you're capable of doing those two things, you can compete with and beat anybody in the conference or the country. I think you'll see a lot more of that type of football this season from us.

On losing Jake Locker to the NFL:
Jake was a great player, really improved a lot over the last couple years and it was an absolute joy being able to come out here and coach #10 every day at practice the last two seasons. Him coming back and maybe losing some of his draft stock but doing what he felt was the right thing to do meant a lot to me and to most of you fans in Seattle. It'll be difficult without having him there under center every Saturday, but we feel like we have a couple talented players ready to step up and take over that mantle of being the leader of this team.

On the 2011 captains:
It wouldn't have been difficult for me to name five, six, seven guys to be our captains, I feel like we have a strong group, but the players and coaches voted and four names kept coming up on pretty much every ballot. One, Chris Polk. What can you say? The kid has been amazing his first two years here and has a chance to become our all-time leading rusher with another strong season. Senio Kelemete was a captain last year and is the anchor of our offensive line. Alameda Ta'amu showed what kind of player he is and can be in the Holiday Bowl against Nebraska. And Cort Dennison may not be the biggest or fastest, but boy does he get the job done in the middle. A really great honor for all four of those young men.

On getting back to the Rose Bowl:
That's our goal every year. I don't believe in being content with 7-6 or 8-5 or just qualifying for a bowl game or any of that. I think with the new conference alignment, 12 strong teams, and a conference championship game, whoever ends up coming out of this league has a really strong chance to play for the national championship. That's our goal here. Will it be this year? I'm not going to make any promises on that, but I do promise we will work hard towards that goal each and every day.

9/3/11 - Idaho recap

Huskies win opener, 47-28
Seattle Times, September 4, 2011

Seattle, WA -- The Washington Huskies began the season 1-0 for the first time since 2007, as they defeated the Idaho Vandals 47-28 at Husky Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Thanks largely to 156 yards rushing and four touchdowns from junior Chris Polk, the Dawgs were able to pull away for a comfortable win.

After falling behind 27-7 late in the third quarter, Idaho used several big plays to fight their way back into the game. Arizona State transfer Ryan Bass broke three tackles en route to a 47-yard touchdown run and helped the Vandals convert a Keith Price fumble into points by hauling in a 16-yard screen pass for a score to trim the deficit to six.

Sophomore Jesse Callier made the biggest play of his young Husky career on the ensuing kickoff though, finding a seam in the wedge and busting through to the left sideline for a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. It was the Huskies first score on a kick return since 2007, when Louis Rankin took the opening kickoff of the Apple Cup all the way back.

Idaho refused to give up though, marching down the field in just three plays, including a 52-yard pass to Justin Veltung. Quarterback Brian Reader found backup halfback Princeton McCarty wide open down the middle for a 27-yard touchdown on the very next play to make it a 34-28 game.

Chris Polk took over from there, carrying the ball on five straight plays and finishing off the drive with a 33-yard touchdown run behind center Drew Schaefer and right guard Colin Porter. After a defensive stop, he'd add his fourth and final score on a seven-yard run with just over two minutes to play.

Head Coach Steve Sarkisian
On his overall thoughts of the game:
Idaho is a decent football team, they've got a very good quarterback, a talented wide receiver, and a running back who has gone through some Pac-10 wars, so we didn't take them lightly. I'm a little disappointed in our defense, we missed a few assignments and that created some big plays for them. Hopefully we can get those figured out this week.

On Keith Price:
I don't like to use the term 'manage the game' because that has kind of become an insult to quarterbacks, but that's almost what he did. If something wasn't there, he didn't force anything. Probably could have avoided a couple of those sacks by throwing the ball away, but he didn't make any terrible decisions. Made a couple big plays too, that throw on the touchdown to Kearse was fantastic and he was able to spread the ball around.

On Chris Polk's day:
He makes it easy on a head coach or on the guy calling the plays. Always falling forward, always picking the right hole to run through.

On what the defense needs to do to improve:
Just being in the right place at the right time. I talked to [defensive coordinator] Nick [Holt], and thought we made good calls. Once or twice we were in a cover-three and for some reason Quinton [Richardson] was up on the line pressing their receiver and not getting back in his zone. I liked the pressure we got from the defensive line. Our seniors, Alameda Ta'amu and Everrette Thompson were in the backfield a lot and meant we didn't have to blitz.

Junior tailback Chris Polk
On his thoughts:
The offensive line made it pretty easy for me today, man. Seems like most of the time I was able to get through to the linebackers before anyone laid a paw on me. Pretty easy grabbing four, five, six yards a pop when they do that.

On Keith Price:
He did a great job taking what was given, he made a couple nice calls at the line too. One time, they had the line stacked and instead of sending me right up at 'em, he switched out and made a nice play to Jermaine [Kearse].

On Jesse Callier's kickoff return:
They were creeping back in the game. What a big play. Dude's fast. Good vision. What a way to score your first touchdown. My first TD was a little one-yard run and I can hardly forget it. Can't imagine what he's thinking after that big return. Probably thinks he should get some more of my carries now!
