Shuler Fails Physical, Coffman To Practice Squad

Maybe that's why he was cut on Saturday.

Who? Former Dolphins tight end Mickey Shuler, claimed off the waiver wire on Sunday, failed his team physical on Monday and was waived injured. Meanwhile, the player released to make room for Shuler, Chase Coffman, cleared waivers and was signed to the Bengals practice squad, which is where he spent last season after being a cut down day casualty. That still leaves a vacant spot to fill, and head coach Marvin Lewis said he's prepared to go into opening weekend with only two tight end on the roster. With the team keeping its options open, Lewis did not speculate as to how the vacancy would be filled, although a blocking tight end or a corner would make the most sense.

Re: Bungle In The Jungle | M2H's Cincinnati Bengals

Bengals Spoil Shurmur's Debut With 20-7 Win At The Dawg Pound

The Mangina may no longer be in charge of the Cleveland Browns, but they still play like poo-says. In a rain-soaked season opener in Cleveland that marked the debut of new Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, the Pixies manged only 5 first downs, one third down conversion in eleven tries, and a mere 89 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, the tandem of Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott provided Cincinnati with a 1-2 punch that pounded the rock for over 90 yards for each ball-carrier. Opening day also saw the first of what Bengal fans hope will be many touchdown connections for the Dynamic Duo of rookies Andy Dalton and A.J. Green.

One of the newest Bengals, Brandon Tate, who took a kickoff all the way against them on opening day a year ago, started his new gig with a bang, taking the opening kickoff 101 yards for an apparent score. Unfortunately, Tate left some laundry in his wake, and the clipping call erased the touchdown and put the ball at the Cincy 21. After a delay of game penalty, Dalton's first official NFL pass was a 7 yard completion to Andre Caldwell. Dalton's first completion to Green came only following play and was good for 12 yards, and the opening possession went on to yield a 36 yard Mike Nugent field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, rookie linebacker Dontay Moch hauled down Josh Cribbs at the 14. Three incomplete Colt McCoy passes had the Bengals beginning their next series with a short field, but Nugent missed a 48 yard attempt.

As is often the case, when the "Big Moment" finally came, it was less than spectacular. Dalton and Green busted their mutual cherry on a 6 yard slant that put the Bengals up 10-0 with 10:04 remaining in the half. The score was still 10-0 at halftime, thanks in part to strong safety Chris Crocker playing for center field for an end zone interception 1:06 before the break.

Moch tracked down Cribbs inside the 20 again on the second half kickoff, and after another of the many three and outs by the Browns, the Bengals were advantageously perched at the Cleveland 40. The field position went to waste, however, when Joe Haden picked off Dalton at the 31. A 40 yard boot by Nugent extended the Cincinnati lead to 13-zip going into the fourth quarter. It was the Cleveland defense that kept the Browns from being shut out. With 6:45 to go, Benson, perhaps having a flashback to his recent stint in the pokey, coughed up the pigskin inside the 5 as he was getting gang tackled after receiving a screen pass. Rookie outside linebacker Quinton Spears was the first man to the ball and raced 94 yards to get the goose egg off the Cleveland side of the scoreboard. Credit for the force went to D'Qwell Jackson. With a 40 yard completion from Dalton to Jerome Simpson putting the ball in the red zone at the 11, the Bengals put the game away with a 7 yard touchdown burst by Scott with 3:35 to play.

Re: Bungle In The Jungle | M2H's Cincinnati Bengals

Bengals Bust Broncos, 33-10

With Cedric Benson having another solid outing and rookie QB Andy Dalton thriving in the short passing game, completing the underneath routes seemingly at will to achieve a stratospheric completion percentage, the Cincinnati Bengals once again dominated time of possession as they thumped the Denver Broncos, 33-10. The Bengal defense never allowed the Denver running game to get untracked and harassed Kyle Orton into a sub-par day.

After the game began with an exchange of punts, Denver's from its end zone, Cincinnati got on the board in its second series. Bernard Scott scored from 2 yards out a play after Dalton's 11 yard completion to fullback Chris Pressley. Getting tripped up denied Benson a 27 yard TD run, but he gave the Bengals another first and goal at the 2. This time offensive coordinator Jay Gruden went with a play-action pass, and Dalton was sacked at the 11 by D.J. Williams. After hooking up with rookie tight end Colin Cochart for a gain of 7 yards, Dalton was sacked again, this time by Jason Hunter, and the Bengals settled for a 29 yard Mike Nugent field goal. Nugent made it 13-0 by drilling a 52 yard field goal with 6:38 left in the half, but it was a kick he might not have made at sea level. Orton finally got the Broncos moving and connected on a 42 yard strike to Eddie Royal, who had three yards of separation on Nate Clements and went half of the play's distance after the catch. It's surprising it took that long for the absence of Jonathan Joesph to be exposed.

It was a scoreless third quarter until Nugent hit from 44 yards away at the 4:06 mark and Leon Hall delivered a 36 yard pick-six shortly after the ensuing kickoff. A 42 yard field goal by Mike Nugent got the Broncos within a couple of touchdowns with over 11 minutes still to play, but a 1 yard run by Benson and a 32 yard boot by Nugent on the play after the 2 minute warning wrapped up the scoring.

Getting tripped up cost Cedric Benson a 27 yard TD run, and the Bengals
ended up with only a field goal.

Eddie Royal is end zone bound after torching Nate Clements. Yes, corner
will be a priority in the next offseason.
