Out of the Shadows and Into the Spotlight: A St. Louis Rams Franchise

Out of the Shadows and Into the Spotlight:
A St. Louis Rams Franchise
(2011)

August 28, 1999:
"Obviously this is a critical time for us. Trent Green looked good in his first three games, and you can't account sometimes for these freak accidents. Harrison gave Green one of those big hits that sometimes, yes they can be avoided, but I believe stuff like that happens in the game. The Chargers have always been a competitive team, even in the pre-season, so you can't blame them for getting their season mode on against us. Green has a torn ACL that will put him down for the year, and we're going to let Kurt Warner get a try. This team will compete no matter what happens."

-Coach Dick Vermeil on Trent Green's injury following 24-21 win over Chargers

August 29, 1999:
"Warner is going to be the #1 Quarterback on the depth chart, and we'll rally around Kurt Warner and we will play good football. Losing Green is a very big loss for us, but this is football. Face adversity and obstacles and take home big prizes."

-Coach Dick Vermeil on selecting Kurt Warner as the Rams starting QB

Rams won the Super Bowl in 1999 and all was good. That was until...

September 7, 2003:
"Being with the Rams organization for so long, I realize that sometimes your time is up. Kurt didn't look good out there and unfortunately we're going to sit him and help him clear his mind a bit. Anytime you fumble seven times in a game, it starts to affect you the rest of the way, and we don't want Kurt to keep his mind wrapped around this performance. So for now we have Marc Bulger starting and we'll see what happens."

-Coach Mike Martz on sitting Warner in place of Bulger

Rams would go to the playoffs twice with Bulger, but again too many injuries helped derail a promising career....

April 22, 2010:
"With the 1st pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select...Quarterback Sam Bradford from the University of Oklahoma!"

And so here we are...

2010 was a small preview of bigger things to come for the St. Louis Rams. They went 7-9 with Bradford as their every week starter after going 1-15 the previous season. In a very weak NFC West division, the Rams would end up being forced into a final showdown with the Seattle Seahawks for not only the NFC West crown, but a trip to the playoffs. Unfortunately the Rams went on to lose to their rivals, and all that came out of the season was renewed hope, and a Rookie of the Year QB in Sam Bradford. Now the Rams look to pick up where their season hung last year, and finally start getting back to playing playoff caliber football....Out of the Shadows of Warner and Bulger..And Into the Spotlight with Sam Bradford!

St. Louis Rams
2011-12 Preseason Results and Storylines

~WEEK 1~
AT
Saturday, August 13th, 2011
7:00 CDT
Edward Jones Dome
KTVI Channel 2 in St. Louis

Rams (1-0) 34, Colts (0-1) 17 F
It was all about the total yardage for the Rams as they racked up over 500 yards of it. The run defense for St. Louis continues to struggle, and Sam Bradford looked sharp in his first game since losing to the Seahawks a year ago. Peyton Manning of the Colts, who is coming off neck surgery, showed that he is an Iron Man on the field. The Rams were forced to make their first set of cuts, as they said goodbye to HB Kevin Toston, WR Dominique Curry, and MLB Josh Hull.

~WEEK 2~
AT
Saturday, August 20th, 2011
7:00 CDT
Edward Jones Dome
KTVI Channel 2 in St. Louis

Titans (2-0) 20, Rams (1-1) 10 F
Matt Hasselbeck continues to haunt the memories of Rams fans as he faced off against his former rivals. The Rams offense did little, as Sam Bradford didn't put up anything near good numbers, and the Rams had 62 yards total on the ground. Another set of cuts were made, as this time the Rams said goodbye to injured WR Mark Clayton, TE Fendi Onobun, C Drew Miller, and LE Eugene Sims. The Rams then signed C Kris O'Dowd to a 1 year deal worth $310K.

~WEEK 3~
AT
Friday, August 26th, 2011
7:00 CDT
Arrowhead Stadium
KTVI Channel 2 in St. Louis

Chiefs (2-1) 20, Rams (1-2) 10 F

Same score, same story. Sam Bradford threw his first interception of the pre-season, and the Rams were out run by the Chiefs. Jamaal Charles, running back for Kansas City, ran the ball 23 times, racking up over 143 yards and scoring 2 touchdowns. If the Rams can't stop the run, it will be a long season.

  • MLB James Laurinaitis out 3 weeks (Abdominal Tear)
  • LE George Selvie out 9 weeks (Broken Forearm)
  • TE Lance Kendricks Out for the Season (Torn Tricep)
  • CB Jerome Murphy Placed on Injured Reserve (Ankle)
  • Cut P Nathan Strauss, RG Dezrick Grandon, DT Jermelle Cudjo, RE C.J. Ah You, DT Darell Scott, CB Marquis Johnson, FB Chris Massey, and QB A.J. Feeley

~WEEK 4~
AT
Thursday, September 1st, 2011
6:30 CDT
EverBank Field
KTVI Channel 2 in St. Louis

Rams (2-2) 19, Jaguars (2-2) 13 F
The Rams took on rookie QB Blaine Gabbert and picked him off twice in their win. Sam Bradford threw a strike to Donnie Avery, and the Rams stopped Maurice Jones Drew and the Jaguars in the last preseason game. Now things get interesting from here. The Rams will now try and get through an early, grueling first half schedule to start the regular season. Will the Rams be able to take down the "Dream Team" Philadelphia Eagles Week 1? If the defense plays like they did today, it's possible. The Rams made their final cuts of the pre-season to get their roster down before the deadline.

  • Rams cut CB Darrien Willis, QB Thaddeus Lewis, TE Schuylar Oordt, DT Gary Gibson, and CB Na'il Diggs
  • Rams sign QB Nate Davis to 1 year deal worth $460K

FOX SPORTS CHEVY PREGAME SHOW

VS
Philadelphia Eagles (0-0) @ St. Louis Rams (0-0)

Week 1
September 11, 2011
12:00 PM CDT
Edward Jones Dome

PREVIEW
Two different teams, two similar directions. The Eagles, who made Michael Vick their starting quarterback in the 2nd half of Week 1, seemed to have made the right choice, as Vick went on to put up a season out of this world. It all would end where it started, as the Packers, who would go on to become the Super Bowl Champs, beat the Eagles in Philly for the 2nd time on the season.

The Rams were the feel good story of 2010. Everyone thought Sam Bradford would need more time and more weapons to get the job done in St. Louis. As true as that may be, the Rams posted their best season in four years, going 7-9 and competing for a playoff spot in the weak NFC West. All that would come to an end as they would end up losing to their rivals the Seahawks on the last game of the season. Sam Bradford became the Offensive Rookie of the Year for 2010, and the Rams finally had a good outlook on their future.

Today this is where I believe storylines will start getting drawn up. The Eagles had a very productive off-season, while the Rams stocked up through the draft. Many experts are calling the Eagles the team to beat, "The Dream Team." But the Rams know their job is to take care of those talks Week 1.

OTHER STATS
The Eagles lost to the Rams in St. Louis in the 2001 NFC Championship Game.

Last time the Rams played the Eagles, it was in Philly, where McNabb threw for 3 TDs in a 38-3 crushing win over St. Louis.

STANDINGS
-NFC EAST-
Eagles 0-0
Cowboys 0-0
Redskins 0-0
Giants 0-0

-NFC WEST-
Rams 0-0
Seahawks 0-0
Cardinals 0-0
49ers 0-0

Philadelphia Eagles (0-1) @ St. Louis Rams (1-0)

RAMS 21 EAGLES 19

Week 1
September 11, 2011
12:00 PM CDT
Edward Jones Dome

OVERVIEW
This game had the feel of a playoff matchup. The Rams, who last year did very well at home, continued to show that they are looking to silence their critics. At first the Rams had a hard time scoring in the Red Zone, with their first three trips resulting in no scores. The Eagles had the same problem, as the Rams held them to 4 field goals. This should spark the Rams moving forward, and this will give the Eagles something to think about.

FIRST QUARTER
-Eagles take 3-0 lead on Henery's 38 yard field goal
-A 50 yard TD from Sam Bradford to Steven Jackson puts Rams up 7-3

SECOND QUARTER
-Not much scoring in this quarter as the Eagles get two field goals out of Henery to lead at half 9-7

THIRD QUARTER

-Michael Vick finally connects with Jeremy Maclin on a 49 yard strike, putting the Eagles in control 16-7.
-The Eagles would follow and extend their lead with another field goal from Henery, his 4th on the day, to go up 19-7
-The tide of the game shifted dramatically as Danny Amendola returned a kickoff for a touchdown, going 97 yards. The Rams were setting up shop for this comeback win, now only down 19-14.

FOURTH QUARTER
-With 34 seconds left in the game, Sam Bradford found an open Danny Amendola for the game winning touch down. A 9 yard touch down would give the Rams a 21-19 win.

PRESENTED BY VERIZON

VS

St. Louis Rams (1-0) @ New York Giants (0-1)

Week 2
September 19, 2011
7:30 PM CDT
MetLife Stadium

PREVIEW
The Rams are coming off a remarkable comeback win against the Eagles. The Giants are still wondering what happened last week, when Rex Grossman and his Redskins made quick work of them. St. Louis was able to spread the field and stop the Eagles when they needed the stops the most. 4 times the Eagles were in the Red Zone, and they only came up with 4 field goals. The Giants are looking to start fresh at home against a high confidence Rams bunch. Sam Bradford struggled on the road last year, and he looks to make up for it this year and try to put the Rams at 2-0.

OTHER STATS
Sam Bradford threw 3 INTs last week vs. the Eagles. He threw 3 INTs to open the season last year vs. the Cardinals.

Tom Coughlin is closer and closer to getting fired, sources say.
