Week 5: North Texas Mean Green (2-1) @ Florida International Panthers (3-1)
Saturday September 29th, 2012 - 12:30 P.M. - No Broadcast
FIU Stadium
Florida International is sitting right where they want to be. On top of the division and ready for promotion. FIU was relegated into the Cellar League last year after an abysmal 3-9 season. They are out for blood this year and looking to get back up into Challenger League 3. North Texas on the other hand has been an underachieving team. Last year they had a lot of talent and beat the team that ended up getting promoted but just couldn’t close out games that they should have won. These two teams are the top ones in their league and will be looking to get a victory to vault themselves ahead in the standings.

Recap
The weather would be warm for this game at a packed FIU Stadium as it would be the normal for both teams as they are used to playing in that kind of weather. North Texas would lose the coin toss and FIU would defer so North Texas would start the game off with the ball.
North Texas would get the ball to start off the game and would hand the ball off to Patrick Smith 4 times for 20 yards then Jon Hughes would find Willie Gibson in the back of the end zone wide open for a 13 yard touchdown pass to put North Texas up on their first drive of the game 7-0. Carl Coleman would lead the drives for FIU and would complete a 15 yard pass for his first play of the game, however they couldn’t must any more positive yards after that and FIU would be forced to punt after 3 more plays. North Texas would get the ball back and would march down the field behind the arm of Hughes and the legs of Smith until finally Josh Barrett would punch it in the end zone for a 9 yard touchdown to put North Texas with a comfortable lead 14-0. FIU would get the ball and start handing it off and they would just munch up yards on the ground to get deep in North Texas territory until the end of the quarter and then both teams would swap end zones.
Willie Gibson hauls in a touchdown pass
On the first play of the second quarter, FIU would finish their drive with yard touchdown pass from Coleman to Antonio Robinson for 13 yards to close the gap, 14-7. On the ensuing drive North Texas would mix it up with a combination of passing and running, however their efforts would end up being all for naught as they would be forced to punt. Coleman would complete a big pass on the first play of the drive for FIU, however they wouldn’t be able to get another first down after that and they would be forced to punt. North Texas would get one first down after a pass from Jon Hughes to Joel Coleman and a rush by Patrick Smith, but then wouldn’t be able to gain any more yards and would be forced to punt again. FIU would then muster up the strength to get another drive going down the field, however it would be stopped short of a touchdown by a sack on third and long. Donald McCoy would line up for the 40 yard field goal and would end up missing it to give the ball back to North Texas. On the ensuing play Jon Hughes would feel some pressure and end up scrambling all over the place and would finally find himself in the end zone on the ground for a 27 yards sack and a safety to bring the score to 14-9. Hughes and coach jct32 would been seen shortly after in a very heated discussion on the sideline. Coleman would throw the ball down the field after the safety and setup a 43 yard field goal by Donald McCoy to close the gap 14-12. On the ensuing drive North Texas would place Eric Rogers in for Hughes at Quarterback and he would complete some passes before the whistle was blown and the teams headed back to the locker room for halftime.
Hughes gets taken down for a safety
FIU would get the ball to start off the second half and North Texas’ defense would show up by forcing them to a 3 and out on the first drive. However, FIU would stiffen up their defense and return the favor on the next North Texas drive. Coleman would get the ball back and once again start finding receivers and running the no huddle. He would throw the go-ahead touchdown pass to Brian Harris for 32 yards to take the lead 18-14. FIU would go for the two point conversion and it would fail. North Texas would not be one to die and after a couple of rushes by Smith, Rogers would find Jared Dawson for 38 yards on a long pass play. The offense would be stopped after that however, and Jesse Carter would kick the 50 yard field goal to bring the game even closer 18-17. Coleman once again lead FIU down the field and it looked like he was starting to hit his stride. However, after leading them down to the North Texas 30 yard line, he would throw an interception to give North Texas the ball back. North Texas would not be able to capitalize on the turnover and would go 3 and out on the ensuing drive. FIU would complete some passes and get some rushes but would not be able to punch it all the way and would settle for a 53 yard field goal try by McCoy which would be missed to end the third quarter
Brian Harris breaks a tackle to take the screen pass in for a touchdown
North Texas would get the ball next and Rogers would find Willie Gibson for 10 yards on the first play, Smith would add 13 yards on the next two plays, and then Rogers would hit Jared Dawson on a curl route and he would break two tackles to score a 41 yard touchdown. However North Texas would fail to get the two point conversion, 23-18. FIU would once again be stopped by North Texas and would be forced to go 3 and out. North Texas would also run into the same problem on their next drive and would be forced to punt in what might seem to be the making of a defensive battle again. FIU would decide to break that routine on their next drive and after some good rushes by B. Watkins, McCoy would hit a 48 yard field goal to bring the score to 23-21. North Texas would start to run the clock out, but on their second play on running the clock, Patrick Smith would find a hole and rush 68 yards for a touchdown to make it a two score game 30-21. FIU would try to mount a drive and Coleman would hit some passes but they would not be able to move very far down the field a McCoy would miss a 51 yard attempt. North Texas would kneel the ball on the next play to end a big win over a league opponent.
