Re: Virginia Tech Hokies: Reach For Excellence (2012)

haha, literally. I replayed that hit over and over. In real-time, it looked viscous! My defense played like that the whole game, but that was the best example I had.

Playing the Arkansas State game tonight.

Sources: MWC / C-USA Granted BCS-AQ Status
____________________________________________
____________________________________________

Blacksburg, VA (AP) - The ground continues to shake after the earth-shattering news from earlier this year that the structure of the NCAA as we know it was about to under take a major change. Just as the news was released about how each conference will be playing an actual game for their championship and how each conference would be seeded to the bowl games, sources have filed to ESPN today that the BCS Bowl Landscape will be further changing and expanding. Not only will the current AQ conferences be altered, but the news came out that there will be 2 new conferences added to the BCS AQ status.

The NCAA has agreed to extend AQ status to both Conference-USA and Mountain West Conferences after both conferences lobbied to seek the automatic qualifying bid with the expansion of the conferences, and with the introduction of the championship games. This was a move that no one saw coming, but will be a welcomed change to the NCAA. While many schools may be upset and not agree with the move, the move should help increase the level of competition, and give more schools a chance at becoming a prominent program. This will bring exposure to more institutions, and from an academics stand-point, how could one not agree with this move? With the two schools being added, obviously there were questions as to which bowl game the two conferences would seed to. For the first time in BCS history, each BCS Bowl Game will have two separate conferences with an automatic seeding, which has reduced the possibilities of at-large bids. These will still come into play with conferences that have representatives in the National Championship game, though. The sources confirmed that the new BCS structure will go as follows:

_____________________________

Orange Bowl
  • ACC Conference Winner
  • Big East Conference Winner
Sugar Bowl
  • SEC Conference Winner
  • Big 12 Conference Winner
Fiesta Bowl
  • Conference-USA Winner
  • Mountain West Conference Winner
Rose Bowl
  • Pac-12 Conference Winner
  • Big Ten Conference Winner
_____________________________

With this structure, things will certainly become more interesting. While the ACC raided and recruited several Big East teams, they will have the opportunity to compete against their former rivals and conference foes in the Orange Bowl by winning the conference championship. This has the potential to create some incredible bowl games with storied and emotional rivalries. The only other notable changes are the fact that Big 12 will seed to the Sugar Bowl, and the newly announced AQ C-USA and MWC will enter the Fiesta Bowl. This will be interesting because schools from both of these conferences have been trying to prove themselves for years that they belong in the BCS hunt. One has to think that Boise State for one will not be happy that about this, because they had the route to the BCS National Championship, but could never get "love" in the polls due to their Non-AQ status. With that changing, and Boise State defecting to the Pac-12, they will have a much tougher road to the title chase. It will almost be a given that they come out with a chip on their shoulder in 2012, and will attempt to knock off the Hokies in the season kick-off to prove they are for real to the country.

Just when we thought things couldn't get any better, the introduction of two conferences to the BCS AQ status and the change of the landscape of the BCS Bowl seeding, college football is reaching a whole new level. With all the changes as of late, it begs the question - have we seen the end of the changes, or is this just the tip of the iceberg? Grab some popcorn folks, because we feel like things are only getting started!

Re: Virginia Tech Hokies: Reach For Excellence (2012)

feedback &/or suggestions on how my new dynasty is so far? I changed it up a little bit from my last one, but mostly just provided better media coverage. I am trying to have more storylines and build it up more so it's not just game, re-cap, game, re-cap, offseason.

About to post the Arkansas State game.

Hokies & Red Wolves Collide:
Shocker In Blacksburg

- The Hokies Were Caught Off Guard By The Red Wolves On Saturday -
____________________________________________
____________________________________________

Blacksburg, VA (AP) -- On Saturday, the Arkansas State Red Wolves entered a loud and rowdy Lane Stadium in Blacksburg to take on the #15 Virginia Tech Hokies in the 3rd game of this young 2011 season. Lane Stadium was a packed house, with 66,000+ decked out in white gear for the annual "White-Out." Just before kick-off, the Hokies dressed in their all-white uniforms slapped the Hokie Stone and stormed out of the tunnel as Enter Sandman blasted through the PA system, and thousands jumped up and down to one of the best home field advantages and college traditions in all of college football - certainly an intimidating spectacle for any road team. With thousands screaming, and the army of white storming onto the field, the momentum looked to be in the Hokies' hands as they prepared for a beat down of their Sun-Belt Conference foe. There was only one problem - the Red Wolves wasn't shaken by the intimidation factor. Matter of fact, it was the Red Wolves that brought all the momentum to the table and caught the Hokies off guard.

_________________

The Hokies would attempt to steal all the momentum early by winning the coin toss, and electing to receive. Clearly they felt like they should be able to handle the Red Wolves with ease, and that their would not be a problem with the defense taking the field in the second half. Folks, this is why there are no-such thing as "paper champions," and exactly why we play the game. On their opening series of the game, the Red Wolves defense completely shut down Logan Thomas and David Wilson, forcing a quick three and out, including a sack on the Sophomore Quarterback. A booming punt by Scott Demler, and excellent coverage pinned the Wolves deep on their own 5 yard line with their backs up against the wall, and thousands of screaming fans attempting to impede the snap-count.

Ryan Aplin came out to lead the Wolves down the field and get out of the shadow of their own goal. The Quarterback didn't take long to silence the 66,000 strong at Lane, as he called his own number on the read-option keeper, dissected the Hokies' defense, and jetted 95-yards down the field for a shocking touchdown to give Arkansas State the lead at 7-0.

-Aplin calls his own number on the keeper and races 95-yards for a touchdown-

1 play, 95 yards later and the Hokies found themselves picking their jaws off the turf and on the opposite side of a 7-0 advantage. By now, though, everyone knows after 25 years of Beamer-Ball, that the Hokies are usually shaken but never stirred by opposing teams, big or small, losing or winning. The offense led by Logan Thomas bounced right back on the ensuing possession and worked the offense down the field and on the cusp of scoring range. However, 2 sacks led to a 4th down from the 40 yard line. Beamer sent out the offense to attempt the 4th-down conversion since it was too far for a field goal, but too close for a punt. It proved to be the right decision as Logan Thomas stood in the fact of pressure, took advantage of the mis-match, and fired a rocket to Marcus Davis who shakes the defenders and slips into the end-zone for a 40-yard touchdown to knot the game up at 7 a piece.

-Davis hauls in the 4th-down pass from Thomas, and darts for a touchdown to tie the game up at 7-

With this drive, the Hokies stole back some of the momentum from the Red Wolves and tied the game up. On the kick-off, a huge fumble forced by the kick-coverage of the Hokies seemingly stole the momentum back momentarily, but the Wolves were able to pounce on the loose ball at the 12 yard-line, and re-gain possession. The star from the previous series, Aplin, returned to the field looking to repeat his performance from the last drive. However, on first down, the defense for the Hokies broke through the flood gates and sacked the quarterback on the 5-yard line to force a second and long. A 2nd down rush was stopped at the line of scrimmage, and on 3rd down, Aplin faced a similar situation from the first drive. 5-yard line, 95 yards to go, and thousands behind him making it almost impossible to hear himself think. The quarterback showed incredible poise as he dropped back into the endzone as the pressure closed in, and fired a rocket as 2 Hokie linebackers crushed him as he let go of the pass. The ball was headed towards the sideline, but as Jayron Hosley aggressively chose to go for the interception, the ball somehow went right over the Senior's finger tips, and landed right in the mitts of tight end Kedric Murry, and the behemoth rumbled down the field 95 yards for a touchdown without a soul in sight, and sucked the air out of Lane Stadium as the Red Wolves increased the lead to 14-7. For the first time in history, Aplin conquered a feat no other player has ever done - ran for 95 yard touchdown and thrown for a 95 yard touchdown in the same game, much less in back-to-back series.

With the touchdown the Hokies were sent reeling, as the defense were in a state of shock, and all home field advantage negated by the unlikely Red Wolves. The first quarter ended with the announcers labeling this game an upset alert, and in shock that the Hokies were losing like this. Unfortunately for the Hokies, the scoring did not end there for the Red Wolves as Aplin pieced together a methodical drive capped off by another touchdown to his running back, and extended their lead to 21-7.

Bud Foster was put under stress and heart-rate monitoring after the score, as he was seen screaming at the defense, and even kicked over the watercooler in frustration. Thankfully for the thousands in attendance (and for Bud Foster's cardiac health), the Hokies were able to bounce back on a drive led by Thomas, and was capped off with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Senior Danny Coale to cut into Arkansas State's lead, 21-14.

This 7-point deficit was short-lived, as Aplin again led his offense into scoring position, but thankfully the defense stepped up, holding them to a field goal, and only allowing them to increase their lead to 10 points, 24-14.

Just before the half, Logan Thomas took the Red Wolves by surprise by going for points with only :36 left in the game. Armed with all 3 time outs, Thomas was able to pick apart the defense, and worked his offense down to the 12 yard line. A sack on 2nd down with :11 left forced the Hokies to burn their final time-out, and Cody Journell knocked the ball through the up-rights to bring the Hokies with 7 points at the break, 24-17.

______________

In the second half, the defense came out of the locker rooms focused, and ready to get their team back into the game. They would do just that, as Bruce Taylor would pick off an Aplin pass intended for Murry on the very first play, and gave the Hokies the ball deep in Red Wolves territory. It only took 3 plays before Josh Oglesby punched in the ball from 2 yards out, and brought the score to 24-23. Beamer send out his offense to attempt the 2-point conversion to steal the momentum, but an ill-advised pass by Thomas was knocked to the ground, and the conversion failed. Still, the Hokies had climbed back into this game, and were down only 1 point.

The defense's vow to shut down the Wolves didn't hold weight for long, though, as Aplin made up from his interception, and worked the offense down the field, and into field goal position where they would eventually tack on a field goal onto their lead, 27-23.

The score remained unchanged until late in the 3rd quarter, with only 3 minutes left. The Hokies fresh off a big defensive stand, attempted to put more focus on the running game, and well, it paid off. Thomas handed the ball off to the Heisman Dark-Horse David wilson, who busts through the defense, hits the jets, and sprints 74-yards for a touchdown, giving the Hokies' their first lead of the game. The touchdown brought 66,000 to their feet, and finally the Hokies were back in it leading 30-27.

-David Wilson took the counter 74-yards for a touchdown to give the Hokies the lead-

The 4th quarter began with everyone holding 4 fingers high in the air to signal the most important quarter of the ball-game. No matter how strong a team starts, it's all about how you finish. Holding onto a narrow lead entering the quarter, the Hokies looked focused and determined to put the Red Wolves away. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. Out of the gates, Aplin fired passes into the secondary of Virginia Tech, daring them to take the focus off the rushing attack. The Hokies did just that, and shortly after, Aplin attempted a qb-keeper to catch the defense sleeping. Unfortunately for Aplin, he instead found himself seeing stars after James Gayle gobbled him up, as Aplin's head drove into the turf, knocking the QB out for several series with a sprained neck.

The Hokies would end up holding the Red Wolves, and would capitalize on the big stop by driving down the field before being stopped by the Arkansas State defense, and forced to tack on another field goal to extend their lead to 33-27.

With the 6-point advantage, and only 6 minutes left in the game, Aplin forced his way back into the game in an attempt to lead the Red Wolves to a touchdown to steal back the lead form the grips of the Hokies. The success in the passing game continued where it left off, and the Red Wolves eventually found themselves knocking on the door inside the redzone for the Hokies. On a critical 3rd down play, J.R. Collins snuffed out the screen play, as he leaped through the air to swat the ball to the ground, and then picked up the loose ball and returned it to mid-field. A challenge confirmed that it was indeed a back-wards pass, and was a live fumble. The fumble gave the Hokies the ball with under 4 minutes left, a 6 point lead, and close to scoring range. Had not for the fumble, the Red Wolves could have taken the lead, but instead found themselves with their backs against the wall. David Wilson ultimately pushed them over the wall, after the Junior broke a run outside 22-yards for a touchdown, to extend the Hokies' lead to 40-27 and ultimately ending all hopes at the upset bid for the Red Wolves.

-Wilson takes the ball, and sprints 22-yards for the touchdown late in the 4th quarter-

Down 13 points, Arkansas State led by their fiery Quarterback would not lye down gently, as they utilized an incredible kick return followed by 3 big passes to get deep into the Hokies' territory. However, the defense would come up strong on 4 downs, forcing the turn over on downs and regaining possession from the 39 yard line, but the Red Wolves still had all 3 time-outs in hand with only 1:34 left in the game. 1st and 2nd down runs from Wilson was stuffed, and with armed with 1 time-out, the Red Wolves still had a small glimmer of hope of stopping the Hokies and regaining possession. That small glimmer of hope was completely shadowed on 3rd down, as Logan Thomas dropped back in the pocket, suckered in the pass rush before unloading it to David Wilson, who breaks through arm tackles, jets down the field, breaks more tackles, and is drug down at the 1-inch line for a 61-yard gain. This play summed up just how electrifying and game-changing David Wilson can be, and helped garner Player of the Game recognition. The screen allowed the Hokies to get the first down, and finally end the upset bid from the Wolves.

-Wilson hauls in the screen pass on 3rd down, and jets 61-yards before being brought down at the 1 yard line-

In a display of sportsmanship, Beamer sent in the victory formation, and with 2 kneel downs, the Hokies held on to secure the 40-27 victory over Arkansas State. The Red Wolves gave it a valiant effort, and if it wasn't for the turnovers late in the game, there might have been a different out-come. This will certainly be a learning experience for both programs, especially for the Hokies as they now know they can take no one lightly from here on out.

Offensively for the Hokies, Logan Thomas had an solid game going 15-31 for 324 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Behind him, David Wilson earned the best performance of his career by carrying the ball 19 times for 164 yards with 2 touchdowns, and 3 receptions for 67 yards. Danny Coale hauled in 5 receptions for 89 yards with 1 touchdown, and earned himself as Logan's favorite target of the night.

Bruce Taylor paved the way for the defense again, racking up 12 tackles with 4 tackles for loss and a critical interception in the 3rd quarter. Outside of Taylor, the defense was torched for over 500 yards of offense (both teams combined for 1,008 yards of offense) and had their worse outing of the season. Ryan Aplin had his way with the Hokie defense, going 17-33 for 252 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, and had 18 carries for 144 yards with an additional touchdown. Kedric Murry was another pivotal part of the explosive offense, hauling in 2 receptions for 110 yards and 1 touchdown.

The Hokies are on the road next week as they travel to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd in their last non-conference game of the year before opening up conference play at home against the Clemson Tigers.
