Born to Run Cason and Brown run wild for Stanford against Arizona
PALO ALTO, CA - During his brief time at Michigan, Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez put some of the softest, weakest defenses on the field, especially against power running games.
Stanford turned back the clock on Saturday, as both Garrett Cason and Will Brown went for over 150 yards and 10 yards per carry, helping the Cardinal blow open a close game and win 38-10.
Cason had 193 yards and three touchdowns on only 18 carries, while Brown went for 156 on 14. They carried the load, giving quarterback Shane Williams a light day passing at 13/20 for 132 yards.
"We knew that going in, that our running game could have success," Stanford coach Brian Kudron was blunt in his criticism of Rodriguez's Arizona defense. "They run a scheme that is inherently weak against a straight-ahead running game. So we were really confident we'd be able to do what we wanted on the ground."

Warriors of the West Stanford puts the clamps down on the Warriors' powerful passing game
PALO ALTO, CA - Giving up 363 yards passing is never ideal, but it's also never the stat coaches pay attention to.
The most important stat to Stanford coach Brian Kudron was three - that being the number of points Hawai'i scored on the Cardinal's first string defense, as Stanford's starters smothered the high-flying Warriors and set the pace for the 44-10 win at Stanford Stadium.
On offense, Shane Williams threw for 315 yards and four first half touchdowns, while Garrett Cason saw an unusually high 37 carries on the ground.
"Yeah I guess that was just one of those things," Kudron said of the high number of touches for his starting running back. "Garrett's a workhorse and one of the best backs in the country, so we trust him to carry the load...but yeah, 37 is probably a bit much. But I thought today was a day for our defense. Hawai'i is always a tough matchup because their passing game is so sophisticated, and they always have new ways to get guys open, but we did a great job of shutting them down when they got to the redzone, and ultimately, that's the important part. The most important stat defensively is how many points you give up, so we definitely passed that task today."
