Peril in Provo Williams is rattled, but Miller bails Stanford out in hostile territory
PROVO, UT - It had all the makings of a trap game going in, and for over two quarters, it played out that way.
Stanford's offensive line couldn't cope with BYU's pass rush, and as a result Shane Williams was on the ground for much of the first half. The last shot he took late in the second quarter ended his day, with doctors diagnosing him with a concussion. From there, backup Ryan Miller turned the ball over early in the third quarter, leading to a BYU touchdown and a perilous 24-9 deficit.
Things settled down though, as Stanford coach Brian Kudron utilized Miller's mobility by morphing to a zone read-oriented offense, creating numerous opportunities for running back Garrett Cason (199 yards) and Miller, who ran for two touchdowns, including the one that gave Stanford a 25-24 win with less than nine minutes remaining.
"Well...heh...obviously things didn't quite go according to plan today," a relieved Kudron said after the game. "Ryan got tossed into a tight situation, and he made the plays we needed him to make. Shane should be okay, we think. Doctors told us it was mild concussion, certainly enough to sideline him today, but preliminary reports say it shouldn't be anything that keeps him out longer than this. Obviously with a concussion, it's always a day-to-day thing, so we'll be watching him like a hawk in practice, but the expectation is that he should be good to go, even though we've got a short week ahead of us."
The short week he's referencing is the fact that Stanford will be in action on Thursday night as they travel north to Seattle to face North Division rival Washington.
