No Bowl for the Golden Dome Cardinal buckles down, pulls away from the pesky Irish
PALO ALTO, CA - After a quarter, it seemed like business as usual, with Stanford well on its way to an easy win against Notre Dame.
But the Irish fought back with surprising success, knocking the Cardinal defense back on its heels with their up tempo no huddle passing game. Even more of a surprise was the fact that Notre Dame's offensive line kept quarterback Tommy Rees upright all day, keeping Stanford's feared pass rush at bay.
But ultimately, Stanford's talent and ruthless efficiency won out, as the Cardinal pulled away in the second half for a 42-19 victory, setting the stage for the Pac-12 Championship Game in two weeks, where Stanford will have a chance to win their 13th conference title and book a trip to the BCS National Championship Game.
"Our guys never lost their focus," coach Brian Kudron said. "We started fast, but we sputtered in the second quarter, and they caught us with a right hook and took momentum for a while. But I know the resolve of this team, and I knew we would circle the wagons and get things straight. Now we've got a bye week, extra time to heal up and prepare for the next one."

Rumor: Pac-12 looking to expand again? College football's conference shakeup continues
WALNUT CREEK, CA - A year after the Pac-12 added Colorado and Utah, and the Big 10 added Nebraska, the waves of conference realignment continue to vibrate through the college football world.
Texas A&M and Missouri are leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. TCU and West Virginia will replace them in the Big 12. Pitt and Syracuse will defect from the dying Big East to the ACC.
And now, while the Big East scrambles for survival by inquiring about several smaller schools across the country, the Pac-12 has mostly stayed on the sidelines, seemingly content at staying at twelve after the additions of Colorado and Utah - until now.
While nothing is official, a source close to the top of the Pac-12 food chain confirmed that the conference has reached out to several schools, including San Diego State, BYU, Boise State, and Hawaii, about possible membership. It's unknown what the pecking order is for the schools, and if these talks will even get off the ground, but things are expected to move quickly one way or the other after this season concludes.
The names are the same as they were a month ago for the Trojans, who put a dent in Stanford's defense before the Cardinal ripped off 41 straight points in a 58-20 slaughter at the Coliseum. Now the stakes are infinitely higher, as Stanford's national title hopes ride on the rematch on The Farm.
Talent wise, the Trojans are as dangerous as ever, with Matt Barkley (2972 yards, 24 TDs, 7 INTs), Marc Tyler (1001 yards, 10 TDs), and Robert Woods (65 receptions, 1103 yards, 9 TDs) leading the firepower on offense, and 43 sacks coming from the defense, second in the Pac-12 to Stanford's 47.
Loving seeing my Pitt Panthers taking care of business in the Big East, awesome job for them. For Stanford, hopefully you can just get a repeat performance of the last time you played USC and it will be smooth sialing into the BCS national championship game.
