Bridgewater scoreson an option keeper, Wright breaks a 65 yard TD

ALL THE WRIGHT MOVES
Wright sets out to prove he can be the main man

Louisville, Kentucky - djp knew that his Louisville squad had many unanswered questions entering his second season. With a number of key players moving on could the new pieces fit in and make the transition smooth? Could Redshirt Freshman Teddy Bridgewater lead the team as the quarterback? Could he even play? Could Jeremy Wright replace even half of what Victor Anderson did? Could a receiver fill the void left by Josh Chichester? Could the defense cover the 3 key spots vacated by graduated starters? What about the offensive line, who also graduated 3 starters.

djp would get to see about some answers early in the season when they hosted Kentucky. Louisville had won 42-30 last year on the road. This year the Wildcats came to Papa John's Stadium. The game started off in Kentucky's favor when they jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. Scores came on a 3 yard run by Allen and field goals of 46 and 29 yards by McIntosh. Perhaps the best news for Louisville came when Kentucky QB Newton was knocked out of the game midway through the second quarter. He was 8 of 11 for 98 yards when he departed. Second stringer Philippi would prove to be less effective, though he would throw a late TD pass.

Louisville would finally get on the board halfway through the second quarter when Freshman kicker Emmanuel Richardson connected from 31 yards out. Jeremy Wright added a 76 yard touchdown run, his first of 3. With under a minute left in the first half the Wildcat's Allen added score, this one from 76 yards, and made the score 20-10 Kentucky.

Louisville would get the offense going in the third with a pair of long scoring drives. The first culminated in a 2 yard touchdown run by Teddy Bridgewater when he elected to keep on an option. Bridgewater was knocked from the game with an unspecified injury on the play. The second was capped by a Jeremy Wright 10 yard run. Louisville added a pair of Richardson field goals, from 36 and 37 yards in the fourth. Between the kicks Wright picked up his third score, a 65 yard run. Kentucky would add a Philippi to Williams TD pass late in the 4th to make the final a more respectable 37-27 Louisville.

Wright would take home the Louisville game ball with 250 yards and 3 scores on 28 carries. Bridgewater struggled while he was in the game, completing just 5 of his 16 pass attempts. The 5 completions did go for 75 yards. "Teddy showed us a lot of grit out there today. He had some trouble completing passes but I think a lot of that was nerves and there some balls guys shoulda caught for him." When asked about the injury djp responded with "He got his bell rung on that TD I guess. It was mostly precautionary. We expect he will play next week." Backup QB Dominique Brown went 2 for 2 for 42 yards in relief.

Louisville will have a week off before travelling to face Southern Mississippi who beat FCS East 41-7 earlier today. Kentucky will host FCS MidWest next week.

Wright scores, Brandon Dunn's late sack seals the game

TEDDY BALLGAME
Teddy Bridgewater throws 3 TDs in win

Hattiesburg, Mississippi - Coming off a game in which halfback Jeremy Wright essentially carried the team djp was hoping for a bit more balance. "We certainly don't want teddy to try to do to much but we need to be more balanced. We had a great couple weeks of practice and I think we will play some good football today."

Richardson would break the ice with a 27 yard field goal with 3:10 left in the first quarter. Less than 2 minutes later McGrif-Culver was plunging in for the 3 yard line to make the score 10-0 Louisville. The margin was short-lived as Southern Miss halfback Hardy would take the first play from scrimmage 90 yards for a score. After a Campbell to Sullivan 20 yard touchdown pass gave the Golden Eagles a 14-10 lead Teddy Bridgewater came surging back. He found Haris for qa 13 yard score and then Smith for an 11 yard score minutes later. At the half Louisville had a 24-14 lead. Bridgewater wasn't done yet.

Early in the second half a Hancock field goal and another Campbell to Sullivan score tied the game at 24. Campbell would put up more points when he kept on an option and went in from 2 yards out to give Southern Miss a 31-24 lead. Bridgewater would answer with his third TD pass of the game to Rogers from 21 yards out to knot it back up.

Southern Miss went back on top early in the fourth quarter when Hancock connected for a 33 yard field goal. A long Cardinal possession capped by a 6 yard Curtley score gave them a 38-34 lead with 3:50 to play. Campbell was hot but a fourth down sack by Brandon Dunn forced them to punt and sealed the game. Jeremy Wright picked up a 6 yard score seconds before the final gun to make the score look a little less close at 45-34.

"I tell you what Teddy really stepped it up out there today. We knew he had it in him. He played a great game against a solid team. Their guy, Campbell, he had a hell of a game out there too. Dunn's sack really saved it for us." djp stated following the game. Campbell was 17 of 30 for 191 yards and 2 scores, he was picked off twice. Bridgewater went 17 of 31 for 238 yards, three scores and no interceptions. Louisville will travel to face FIU next week. The Panthers are 0-3 with losses to Duke, UCF and Georgia.

Bridgewater launches a late bomb to Copeland, Wright scores the game winner

PLAYING DOWN
Louisville needs late score to beat lowly FIU

Miami, Florida - "That's why they play the game." Quite possibly one of the most over-used and annoying phrases in all of sports. It's also one of the most true. So when Louisville rolled into the Magic City as heavy favorites djp cautioned them not to look past the Golden Panthers. Maybe they didn't heed the coaches warnings. Maybe FIU was better then advertised. Maybe the Louisville squad simply over-indulged in the many entertainment options in the city the night before the game. "I realize all of the distractions present in Miami. I suppose I should have imagined what I would have done at their age in a city like this. Maybe next time we fly in the morning of the game." djp explained with a chuckle when asked about the teams "sluggish" play following the narrow win.

Things seemed to be going Louisville's way when they took a 21-10 lead into halfime. FIU had scored on a Griffin field goal and a 98 yard Mallary kick return, both in the first quarter. Louisville's scores came on a short run by Wright in the first, another short run by Wright in the second and a Bridgwater to Smith 12 yard pass seconds before the half.

After a 36 yard Richardson put the Cardinals up 24-10 something seemed to change. The Louisville defense seemd to lose a step. The offense seemed to stop executing. Bridgewater threw a pair of sloppy picks. It led to a Medlock to Times 13 yard TD pass in the waining momentd of the third quarter and suddenly it was a game again.

Medlock would throw another TD pass midway through the fourth to tie it up, this one to Maxey for 12 yards. The Cardinal defense was getting no pressure on the QB. Bridgewater was able to answer that score with a 42 yard bomb to Smith on one of just a few crisp plays since minutes after halftime. The score put djp's squad back on top 31-24. Less than a minute later after a pair of big plays Medlock to Maxey from 5 yards out tied it back up. Louisville took possession with just over a minute and a half to play with the score knotted up. Bridgewater addressed the offense before they took the field and proceeded to march up the field with Wright's help. The key play was a 53 yard pass from Bridgewater to Copeland that could not have been executed any better. Wright would cap the drive with 19 seconds to play with a 5 yard TD run. The Cardinal defense would give up some yardage but stop FIU to hold on for the win.

"We definitely didn't play our best game. Luckily we all stepped up and got it done at the end." Jeremy Wright stated after the game. Louisville will have another week off before begining Big East play in Pittsburgh. Pitt is 3-0 with wins over Purdue, Virginia Tech and Buffalo.

Brown scores on a keeper, Nord gets behind the defense for a touchdown

MULTIPLE LOSSES
Louisville loses game, key players

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Already expected to struggle against a tough Pitt team the last thing djp needed to deal with was a key injury. He didn't have one, he had several. Starting QB Teddy Bridgewater was knocked from the game after just a handful of snaps. Starting HB Jeremy Wright missed nearly half the game. WR Damian Copeland was out the entire second half. Backup QB Dominique Brown even missed a few snaps. The Cardinals were also without starting Center Mario Benavides.

Despite the laundry list of injuries Louisville was in the game until the final buzzer sounded. After Pitt jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter Louisville answered with a 6 yard score on an option keeper by Brown. Following a Pitt field goal Louisville took a 14-13 lead when Wright broke off a 65 yard scoring run. Pitt would return the ensuing kick and score twice more in the quarter, leading 34-14 at the half.

The second half was an onslaught by the Cardinals. Wright limped to a 46 yard TD in the third quarter before leaving the game for good.

The fourth quarter saw Louisville storm back and cut the lead to six when Brown hit TE Nate Nord deep then Nord went the distance for a 52 yard score. A key moment in the game came when Brown was knocked out of the game and emergency QB Calvin Pryor was forced into the game. Pryor, listed as a SS was running the ball on a designed keeper when he fumbled and Pitt recovered. Louisville had been on the edge of Richardson's field goal range. Pitt would punt the ball but the Cardinals had almost certainly left points off the board. Louisville would score to take the lead with just 1:49 left to play when true Freshman HB Brandon Lundy scored on a 2 yard run up the middle. Sunseri to Shanahan proved to be too much as the pair hooked up on a deep pass that set up Harper to make a 29 yard field goal and retake the lead. Brown completed several clutch passes before finally having a 4th down attempt batted down.

Louisville drops to 3-1 and 0-1 in the Big East. They host #14 Auburn next week. Auburn is currently 5-1 with wins over Cal, Clemson, LSU, Fresno State and Arkansas. Their lone loss was at Mississippi State on September 8th.

"I feel like we really had this one." stated a dejected djp after the game. "All the kids really played their hearts out. We should have been more prepared for injuries." djp was criticized for only having 2 quarterbacks on the active roster. Freshman Kyle Ridley had been redshirted and was not available for the game. The team will discuss his status when more is known of Bridgewater's injury.

Game Notes
Auburn is led by QB Barrett Trotter (1265yds 15td 4int). They also have a tough duo of runningbacks in Onterio McCaleb (469yds 6td) and Michael Dyer (362, 2). Trotter's favorite targets are TE Philip Lutzenkirchen (25rec 357yds 3td) and WR Emory Blake (23, 338, 5). Auburn has a stifling defense led by OLB Daren Bates. Louisville will be without starting QB Teddy Bridgewater and Starting WR Damian Copeland due to injuries. Center Mario Benavides is still listed as questionable. Herbie has chosen Auburn to win the game.
