Life After Death - A Tennessee Volunteers Dynasty (NCAA 07)

One of the elite programs in the history of college football, the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team has racked up some serious accolades over the years. 13 SEC Championships and 16 times overall, the Vols have finished at the top of their league. 6 claimed national titles, in almost every era of the sport.

Yes, Tennessee has certainly racked up it's share of championships. However, that all changed on February 2, 2007. The era of Tennessee winning championships was seemingly demolished in one 15 minute press conference...

"Due to recent developments regarding the egregious violations of the University of Tennessee's football program, the NCAA has made a decision to suspend the university's football program for 3 academic years, starting with the 2007-2008 academic year, and ending with the 2009-2010 academic year. During this time, the university may not use any scholarships, and the football program is considered to be terminated. The football program may resume play in the 2010-2011 academic session with the full 25 scholarships allotted in place.

Thank you, and have a nice day."

Vol fans were in stunned disbelief. Sure they thought violations would come from the illegal benefits scandal that broke in late 2005, but they never imagined a punishment as severe as this. Not having a football team for 3 years could end up permanently damaging the loyal fan support that Tennessee had enjoyed. Either way, the university decided to continue on, and hope that their program did not suffer the same fate as the SMU Mustangs did 20 years earlier.

They had to continue on. For the school. For the fans. For the state.

Since I'm starting in 2010 with a game set in 2006, most of the rosters are computer generated.

Update - Not doing Coach Mode anymore. Drives me crazy to do.

Life During Death - What Happened In 3 Years

2007 - 2007 saw Oklahoma take home their 8th overall national title with a perfect 14-0 record. Georgia took home an SEC title in an upset over South Carolina.

2008 - The 2008 college football season saw Texas win their 2nd national title in 4 years as they beat #1 ranked and undefeated Miami in the national championship game. The national title was not uncontroversial, in that Texas did not even win the Big XII South. In the SEC, South Carolina took home their first ever SEC title and their first conference title since 1969.

2009 - Texas took home their second national championship in a row as they defeated undefeated USC in the championship game. Texas actually won the Big XII this time on their way to a 13-1 record. Auburn took home an SEC championship, upsetting #2 ranked South Carolina. The NCAA also decided to limit Tennessee to just 5 scholarships in 2010 with no possibility of TV games or bowl game (not exactly like Tennessee was going to do that anyways).

Game Notes
Gameday felt...right for a change. The tailgating was back. The Vol Walk was back. The Vol Navy was back. Everything was right for a change.

Except for the actual football team, that is. Tennessee started off well, even scoring a field goal on their opening drive. However, Tennessee State then squashed Tennessee's hopes and dreams in a big, big way. Tennessee State scored 35 unanswered, and by halftime, it was 35-3, TSU. The Tigers went on to roll in Neyland by a count of 63-17, and thus, Tennessee's first game back was one in which they were crushed.

It looks as if this will set the scene for the rest of the season. With only 53 players, and only 5 of them on scholarship, the Vols will be undermanned by a large margin for the rest of the year.

Game Notes
The Vols are hoping for their first win tonight against the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks, however, the task will be difficult. Normally, the Vols would dispatch a team like Tennessee-Martin with ease, but this is no normal Vols team. The Vols are short of players with even FCS caliber ability, but they have proven to be scrappy. This game could be close, but a Vols win could be in the cards if they can finish drives.
