Game Notes
The Bruins hit the road again this week as the travel to Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ to take on the struggling Sun Devils. Arizona State has opened with a brutal schedule losing to Missouri at home, beating FCS W at home then three straight road losses at Illinois, #19 Washington, and #16 USC. The injury bug has also hit the Sun Devils as maybe up to 3 Sun Devils will be unavailable Saturday including QB Steven Threet who has a strained quadricep. UCLA would look to continue to stay undefeated and will play their first game as a ranked team this Saturday. With Arizona State without their starting QB look for them to pound the ball with junior tailback Cameron Marshall. Meanwhile, the Bruins will continue to pound the rock with their triple option attack

Coso's Pick: UCLA
Kirk's Pick: UCLA

Prediction(2-2): Look for Johnathan Franklin to post his 3rd 100 yd rushing game and the Bruins to win big. 31-13 UCLA

I'm following! Good stuff. I'm tempted to head to UCLA after the next two seasons at Wazzu.

Good luck the rest of the way, I'll be checking in.

WDE!

I am following. I am a silent watcher, but I enjoy this presentation style. I honestly was bored and browsed, not a huge UCLA fan or fan of the option, but I read it all and am impressed so far.

I am definitely enjoying this. I'm a big NCAA dynasty fan and am impressed with your presentation, attention to detail, and your knowledge of the game. I enjoy your style, not alot of people run the option and the 4-2-5. I'm looking forward to more posts and I'm going to start a dynasty blog myself.

Thanks for following! I picked UCLA because I wanted to play in the PAC-10 and also wanted a school with some talent but not at the top. They have a ton of positives in recruiting and turns out it's kind of easy to get guys to come here which was kind of surprising to me. War Eagle!

Thanks man! I've really enjoyed your Mizzou dynasty. I am bad about posting on other or letting them know I follow but I have definitely kept up with yours!

Thanks for the kind words! I like the 4-2-5 in NCAA because if you have lots of speed on your D it's hard to score on. Teams have moved the ball on me but struggled finding the endzone. The triple option is fun if you know what you are doing but even then it can be frustrating. But it's awesome when you get the defense on their heels and can just plow the ball down the field

So I like how this dynasty is going so far. I am kind of surprised I'm undefeated at this point but they've all for the most part been close contests. I still have much of my toughest opponents up soon so things should get interesting. I should have the ASU update up soon and play a few games today. I would also encourage anyone to follow my New Mexico dynasty as well as I have got that one going again. It was just too much fun to let die. Again thanks to all whose following!

Sun Devils Challenge UCLA In The Desert

Kevin Prince carried the UCLA offense on the ground

Tempe, AZ --
The Bruins entered Saturday's contest undefeated and looking to stay that way against a struggling 1-4 Sun Devil team that had started the year with a brutal schedule. Without their starting QB, it appeared Arizona State would get run over in this game. However it was a completely different story as the Sun Devils played some inspired football Saturday

1st Quarter
Coach Woodson decided again to get the ball first but UCLA would do nothing with it going 3 and out. ASU would go to the air to start the game as backup Brock Osweiler got the nod Saturday for the injured Steven Threet. After getting two first downs though the drive would hit a major snag. On 3rd down, senior SD Tony Dye came on the blitz getting to Osweiler right as he released the ball. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the ball flew straight into the big paws of Datone Jones and UCLA had the pick and great field position. UCLA would get one first down on a strong Derek Coleman run but the ASU defense came ready to play early forcing a 36 yd FG. 3-0 UCLA. The two teams would then exchange punts as the defenses had the edge early on. Then the Sun Devils struck big. On the very first play of the drive, nickel corner Stan McKay would get beat off the line by JJ Holliday, who put together a tremendous day. Osweiler would find the wide open wide out and after 55 yds later, the Sun Devils had the 7-3 lead and the momentum. The quarter would end with UCLA facing a 3rd and 13 after picking one first down on a nice Kevin Prince run.

2nd Quarter
The opening quarter 3rd down pass by Prince went incomplete and the Bruins punted. Dick Bumpas's D came ready to play the next possession forcing a quick 3 and out. The turnover bug struck on the next two possessions. First Taylor Embree would muff the punt but UCLA would recover. Then Kevin Prince would pick up another first down on the ground. But on the following 3rd down, Prince completed his first pass of the game to Josh Smith who then got decked and fumbled the football. The result was ASU possession in UCLA territory. But sudden changes have been the Bruins D specialty. On the ensuing 3rd down for ASU, junior UCLA CB Sheldon Price would haul in the clutch INT. He would return it to the ASU 43 yd line. UCLA would finally make a play on offense and shockingly it came through the air. On 3rd and 9, Prince would hit usually poor handed Johnathan Franklin on the seam route. The WB found himself wide open and was able to haul in the pass and go 42 yds for the score giving the Bruins the lead again at 10-7. That would be it for offensive action in the half as the next four possessions would result in either 3 and outs or turnover on downs for the two offenses.

Franklin hauls in his first TD rec of the year to give UCLA the lead

3rd Quarter
UCLA's offense would dominate the 3rd quarter. First after getting one first down, the Sun Devil's would be forced to punt. Then the Bruins offense went to work. Three different times the Bruins offense faced 3rd down. First time Kevin Prince converted on the option keeper. Second time Taylor Embree made a nice catch on the curl route for the conversion. Finally Nelson Rosario would get the conversion and more as he would score the 38 yd TD on the post route. 17-7 UCLA. Another 3 and out for the ASU offense and the Bruins would go right back to work. The rest of the period would be Prince running the ball down the Sun Devils throats as the ASU defense decided today to not let Coleman or either wingbacks beat them. Instead Prince would keep the ball and grind out yardage for the UCLA offense. The quarter would end with UCLA having just converted 3rd down on a pass to Embree.

4th Quarter
UCLA drove all the way to the goaline only to tackled one yard short of paydirt. The Bruins would decide to go for it on 4th down and Malcolm Jones would be hit and dropped just one yard shy of the endzone. With the ball in the shadow of their own goalpost, it appeared ASU would settle with just giving their punter room to punt. However on 3rd down, Osweiler would connect again with Holliday this time for a first down and some good yardage. But on the ensuing 3rd and 14, backup DT and inside pass rushing specialist, Reggie Turner would burst through and haul down the Sun Devil QB. UCLA would get only one first down on the ensuing possession before having to punt. From there things got wild.

UCLA downed the Locke punt at the 6 yd line, but the Sun Devils were ready to go the distance. Osweiler would go to the air and shred the UCLA secondary. Then on a very controversial play, Holliday would catch a pass on the UCLA sideline for a big third down conversion and the ball deep in Bruin territory. Coach Woodson challenged the catch but apparently there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the call even though it appeared Holliday's left foot was on the line. Very next play, JJ Holliday ran a simple corner route and found himself wide open again for a 18 yd TD cutting the Bruin lead to 17-13. ASU's young kicker would miss the extra point and force the Sun Devils now to have to score a TD to win. Clipping on the kick return by Stan McKay put the UCLA offense at their own 14 yd line with only 2:40 to play. On the very first play FB Derek Coleman would try and fight for some extra yards but the ASU defense stripped the senior and recovered. The Sun Devils were now a few yards away from taking the lead. With the ball on the 13 yd line, the Sun Devils would go to the air on first down and Akeem Ayers would almost come up with the pick. Then on 2nd down Cameron Marshall's run was stopped 2 yds in the backfield. On 3rd down, UCLA DE Datone Jones came screaming from the outside to haul Osweiler down for the sack. Facing 4th and 17 the Sun Devils through a prayer to Holliday in the endzone but Price and Raheem Morris were there to break it up and force the turnover on downs! With 40 seconds left, Prince would hit Embree for the third down conversion and seal the UCLA win!

Holliday brings ASU within one score with this 18 yd TD rec

Week 6 Rewind

Arizona State Win Quotes

Coach Jay Woodson on the W: "That Arizona State team came ready to play. They challenged us the whole way and I was real proud of the way our guys responded"

QB Kevin Prince on his performance: "They basically decided that if we were gonna win I was gonna have to beat them. Well I'll take that every game!"

DE Datone Jones on his INT: "Ya us big hosses don't usually get a chance to showcase our hands. I've been telling coach all year that I got the best hands on the team. He couldn't help but smile when I got that pick and neither could I!"

Recruiting Update
UCLA picked up two more recruits after W last weekend. First tackle Michael Smith announced he was choosing UCLA over Fresno State. This 6'5" 272 lb 3 star tackle should provide nice depth for UCLA next year and could be a starter down the road. Finally long time soft commit Armond Awoye announced he would be a Bruin next season. This 3 star rated JUCO player should compete immediately for playing time. This week against Washington State UCLA will host 7 recruits including 4 star ATH Corey Barbour and 3 star QB Javon Kelly. Also Trey Kaplan has announced that UCLA is his leader and many think the 4 star tailback will commit to UCLA soon. But it will be tough for the Bruins to hold off Stanford. This will be a battle till the end

Game Notes
It has not been a fun past two weeks for Washington State as the Cougars have gone on the road and been beaten soundly by #3 Stanford 38-0 and then lost a heart breaker to San Diego State 24-27. Now their 3 game roadtrip concludes with a visit to the red hot UCLA Bruins who have opened the year undefeated. Both teams boast top 40 rush defenses but have struggled at times stopping the pass. UCLA has played a bunch of close games and found ways to win them all. Look for the Cougars to ride the pair of QB Jeff Tuel and WR Jared Karstetter to try and get the ball moving. UCLA will look to continue to grind the football and play stout defense.

Lee's Pick: UCLA
Kirk's Pick: UCLA

Prediction(3-2): UCLA is feeling it right now while Wazzu is struggling. 28-14 UCLA
