Game Notes
UC Santa Cruz returns east to play Ole Miss this week, a team perfectly positioned to exploit their major weakness -- the Rebels showcase the #9 rushing attack in college football, going up against a Banana Slugs' defense that has had notorious difficulty against the run. If there's a bright side, it's that the Slugs feature a pretty potent passing attack against a middle-of-the-road pass defense. The other bright side will be the return of QB Johnny Broussard, who returns to action after an abdominal strain.

Re: SLUG-FEST! A UC-Santa Cruz C-a-S Dynasty (NCAA 12)

REBELS RUN OVER SLUGS, 49-35
Bolden sets school rushing mark with 323 yards

UNIVERSITY, MS -- For the first quarter of Saturday's game between Ole Miss and Santa Cruz, the emerging story was looking to be a rusty Johnny Broussard, who put his team in a two-touchdown hole with interceptions on his first two possessions.

Sixty minutes later, Broussard's struggles were both erased by a fine performance, but reduced to a footnote by Ole Miss halfback Brandon Bolden, who set a school record with 323 rushing yards and five touchdowns -- scoring on runs of 36, 82, 51, 53, and 31 yards.

"There's not much to say when you get beat like that," said Santa Cruz's Ian Baxter. "The kid had a heck of a performance, but we have to own our part of that. For the most part, we didn't shed blocks, we didn't finish tackles, we just didn't execute."

The Rebels got out to a strong start, converting two Broussard picks into 14 points, but then the Banana Slugs settled down and looked like they might make a game of it. First, they rolled off a 14-play, 86-yard drive, capped off by a Terry McCabe touchdown plunge. Unfortunately, the Rebels would get it right back on the first play from scrimmage -- an end-around to Melvin Harris would turn into an untouched 80-yard touchdown scamper. But then the Slugs put another long drive together as the half wound down. However, the drive stalled in the red zone and to make matters worse, Nathan Britt shanked a fairly makeable 30-yard field goal. Ole Miss took over and was content to take a 21-7 lead to the break.

After the break, Ole Miss extended their lead with a pair of long touchdown runs by Bolden, but then Santa Cruz's Trey Lambert decided to join in the fun, springing a run up the gut into a 78-yard score. As the third quarter ticked down, Santa Cruz was on life support, 35-14.

And then, Ole Miss briefly opened a door to let the Slugs back in the game. Even though the run had been working all game, Ole Miss went to the air on their next drive, and Randall Mackey was promptly picked off around midfield. Santa Cruz made the most of the opportunity, driving down for McCabe's second short TD of the day as the 4th quarter started, 35-21.

But the door closed just as quickly, as Bolden broke free again (touchdown #4). UCSC responded with a hurry-up drive that ended in another touchdown with 3:05 left to make it 42-28, but after a failed onside kick, Bolden added his 5th touchdown of the day to make it 49-28. Santa Cruz put one more drive together in the final minute-plus, but at that point, with no timeouts left, Ole Miss was able to take the knee for the two-score win.

"It's tough," said Baxter. "I like that we kept coming back. I like that our two-minute offense was able to have some success. I like that Johnny was able to bounce back from a really rough start and throw with confidence as the game went on. But we have to get stops from our defense. We have to put ourselves in a position where the good stuff counts for something more than a consolation prize."

FINAL: OLE MISS 49, SANTA CRUZ 35

WEEK 6 - Around the NCAA

#1 Oklahoma State and #2 Florida State both sit this week, letting the other teams jockey for position. Several head-to-head battles in the Top 25 this week, but in single action, the favorites mostly do what they're supposed to. Florida is a team on the move after back-to-back overtime wins, including knocking off former #1 Alabama. Running QBs return to the Heisman conversation -- Mississippi State's Chris Relf and Nebraska's Taylor Martinez shore up lesser passing stats with big ground contributions.

Game Notes
Santa Cruz gets ripped for 400+ on the ground, and as a follow-up, they get to play the #6 team in the nation, with a Heisman-candidate quarterback in Chris Relf. They're Top 10 in rushing offense and passing defense... so pretty much, the Slugs' one strength area on offense, and their Achilles Heel on defense. This should be interesting.

On one hand, let's be honest. The probable forecast for Saturday's game is "severe ugliness". On the other hand, much like winning the Powerball, it's fun to think about the "what if"s of knocking off the #6 team in the nation. If there's any path to victory for the B-Slugs, it's that Relf is not an especially accurate passer -- only about 50% completion percentage. So stack the line, make him throw, and hope to force some mistakes.

Easy, right?

Re: SLUG-FEST! A UC-Santa Cruz C-a-S Dynasty (NCAA 12)

TWO HALVES AND TO HOLD
Slugs squander solid first half in 38-0 loss

STARKVILLE, MS -- It wasn't apparent from the final score, but the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs gave the #6 Mississippi State Bulldogs half of a good game. As the first half wound down, the Slugs were only trailing 10-0, having just completed a 14-play drive that came apart on a goal-line interception.

But the final minute of the first half and the second half saw the re-emergence of the same old problems, as halfback Vick Ballard became the second runner in as many weeks to set a school mark for rushing yards. Ballard ended his day with 266 yards and three scores as the Bulldogs cruised to a 38-0 win.

With a little more than two minutes left in the half, the Slugs were at the one foot line, but three runs had proved unsuccessful in punching it in. On 4th and goal, Johnny Broussard decided to try the air, and had Shannon Blanks open for just a moment. But the window closed as corner Corey Broomfield stepped in front of Broussard's pass. It looked for a moment like the game might go to the half scoreless, as a Bulldog holding penalty was followed by a zero-yard option by Chris Relf, but then Ballard shrugged a tackle in the backfield and found a seam off the left tackle for a 90-yard touchdown.

Santa Cruz rallied toward the break, but in a harbinger of things to come, Nathan Britt's attempt to at least get the Slugs on the board with a 41-yard field goal hit the bottom crossbar. Instead of a manageable 10-0 deficit, or even a 17-3 two-possession game, the Slugs went to the locker room trailing 17-0, with the Bulldogs also due to get the ball back.

After the break, in what is becoming a weekly tradition, the Slugs got burned almost immediately after the break. Ballard took a delay handoff and basically ran over linebacker Chad Fowler and was off to the races for a 74-yard touchdown. 24-0 and the rout was on.

Only this time, a new enemy stung the Slugs this week... the holding penalty. Santa Cruz's next three straight drives were dead on arrival thanks to holding calls, and when the line wasn't holding, they were serving as a turnstile, allowing eight sacks on the day.

So while Mississippi State actually stalled out on offense for most of the third quarter, Santa Cruz did nothing to take advantage of it. However, time forced the Slugs to get too aggressive and it ended up backfiring. With about 4:30 left, Santa Cruz got desperate and went for it on their own side of the 50, and Broussard got sacked, setting the Bulldogs up around the Santa Cruz 20. Relf, who otherwise had an un-Heisman-like day, called his own number and slipped two tackles to reach the end zone. The Bulldogs would tack on one more touchdown in garbage time, and this round went to Goliath.

"Right this minute, I'll be content if I never come back to Mississippi in my life," said Coach Baxter. "But we have to pick ourselves up, use the week off, and get ready. Conference play starts next, and we'll have a clean slate there."

WEEK 7 - Around the NCAA

South Carolina leapfrogs two teams that also won to move into the #1 ranking, but a lot of red ink elsewhere in the Top 25. Underdogs won all three head-to-head matchups, and it was a bad day for non-AQs, as Boise and TCU both lost. Heisman-wise, Garcia is back on the radar and STILL hasn't been picked yet. Will Wesley's support evaporate once TCU is out of the title picture?

Re: SLUG-FEST! A UC-Santa Cruz C-a-S Dynasty (NCAA 12)

SLUG TALES PREVIEWS THE WAC!

With Santa Cruz using the off week to regroup for conference play, we thought we'd use the downtime to look at how the WAC is shaping up.

Nevada (4-1, 1-0) is the WAC's lone ranked team at #21. Their signature win was defeating Oregon, which was a Top 10 team at the time. They're the highest-scoring team in the WAC (169 points) and tied for the stingiest defense (116, tied with Hawai'i).
Passing: Tyler Lantrip -- 69-148, 919 yards, 7 TDs, 3 INTs
Rushing: Lampford Mark -- 72-417, 6 TDs
Receiving: Rishard Matthews -- 15-223, 3 TDs

Fresno State (4-2, 1-0) just made a big splash this past week by knocking Boise State (#4 at that point) from the ranks of the undefeated. A step below Nevada on offense and defense. Conference win was against Idaho.
Passing: Greg Watson -- 96-183, 1425 yards, 14 TDs, 7 INTs
Rushing: A.J. Ellis -- 143-750, 6 TDs
Receiving: Kulitapa Taumoepeau -- 28-445, 3 TDs

San Jose State (1-5, 1-1) is struggling overall, but does have a conference win against New Mexico State to their credit. Overall, they have the statistically weakest offense (70 points) and defense (182 points).
Passing: Matt Faulkner -- 75-199, 844 yards, 2 TDs, 9 INTs
Rushing: David Freeman -- 44-222, 1 TD
Receiving: Noel Grigsby -- 40-531, 2 TDs

Utah State (3-2, 0-0) is a respectable 3-2 overall, but has not played a conference game yet. Their wins came against FCS-West, BYU (in overtime) and Wyoming.
Passing: Adam Kennedy -- 62-143, 824 yards, 3 TDs, 8 INTs
Rushing: Robert Turbin -- 91-486, 5 TDs
Receiving: Dontel Watkins -- 23-337, 2 TDs

Hawai'i (1-3, 0-0) has a win against UNLV, and losses against Colorado, Washington, and Ole Miss. They seem to have had more byes than some of the other teams so far.
Passing: Bryant Moniz -- 74-149, 914 yards, 4 TDs, 6 INTs
Rushing: Jordan Monico -- 28-121, 1 TD
Receiving: Royce Pollard -- 32-422, 1 TD

New Mexico State (1-4, 0-1) had their only win come against an FCS school; losses were against Minnesota, UTEP, San Jose State, and New Mexico.
Passing: Matt Christian - 61-130, 840 yards, 4 TDs, 9 INTs
Rushing: Kenny Turner -- 105-422, 5 TDs
Receiving: Stephen McIntyre -- 14-239, 1 TD

Idaho (1-4, 0-1) is in the same boat with New Mexico State and Santa Cruz -- only win against an FCS school. They have a conference loss to Fresno State.
Passing: Brian Reader -- 62-136, 868 yards, 6 TDs, 6 INTs
Rushing: Princeton McCarty -- 67-314, 1 TD
Receiving: Justin Veltung -- 24-304, 3 TDs

Re: SLUG-FEST! A UC-Santa Cruz C-a-S Dynasty (NCAA 12)

WEEK 8 - Around the NCAA

Our first BCS poll, and we have a new #1. Mississippi State got to feast on South Carolina's backup quarterback with Steven Garcia out injured, and came up with a 42-7 win. #3 Florida State laid the big egg of the week -- despite being the only Top 5 team not in the head-to-head derby, they lost to an unranked Duke team. Oops.

In the Heisman race, Ed Wesley stayed put on an off week, but Chris Relf is back yet again.
