Kansas Jayhawks Play Football?! (NCAA 2012)

New Face Around Lawrence
Lionel Hopkins Welcomed as New Head Coach

Lawrence, Kan. -- Kansas fans have been put through some rather miserable football the past couple years, being their last bowl game appearance was the 2009 Insight Bowl and the last BCS bowl was the 2008 Orange Bowl. However something is shaking up the campus at Lawrence and its not Allen Fieldhouse, home of the KU Basketball team. Its Lionel Hopkins, the recently named Head Coach of the Kansas Jayhawks.
"Well I'll start of by saying what an honor it is to be here at this amazing university and given the opportunity to coach and help develop the young men on this campus." Hopkins stated at his first press conference. This also being his first head coaching job. "I can say that I'm fully dedicated to not to coaching these men the right way. There will be no room for sellouts, copouts or quiters. I want winners on this team and more importantly I want to establish a winning attitude and tradition at this campus."
"Now I can sit here and tell you all the things you'd like to hear and all the things every coach wants. But I'm going to tell you I'm whats GOING to happen from the very first day of spring camp. Our QB whoever that might be has to be our leader, has to control the team and be smart. Indepence and trust is what I want in him. I'm hoping to have a strong running back duo delivering with speed and power. Ours we want a mix of speed, and also sharp route runners and tough guys that LOVE contact. Our line is going to be nasty and physical and we are going to put some damn points on the board."
"Defensively I want a deceptively fast but overpowering line, our backers are going to be physical, hard hitting and smart. I need to guys out their to make plays merely off their athleticism and their football IQ. The DB's first, and primary goal is to NEVER get beat deep. I don't care what your excuse is, you get beat deep I'm going to find it very hard to trust you on that field."
Coach Hopkins seems to have a pretty full proof and promising plan however with a lackluster talent roster, he might find it tough in the early going to find some success, though he has the mentality he is in it for the long haul and is ready to get after it.
On offense there will be a closely contested battle for signal caller of the Jayhawks as sophmore QB Jordan Webb and Senior Quinn Mecham battle it out. A very talented sophmore runningback James Sims will provided a nice spark to the offense as he is the ideal mix of speed and power. Freshamn Darrian Miller might see some spell time as he can be a big playmaker for the Jayhawks when Sims is tired. The recieving corp is bolstered by senior wideout Daymond Patterson, though undersized at just about 5'9" he is a competitor non the less and gives it everything hes got every down. Sophmores Christian Matthews and Chris Omigie look to make some big catches as teams start spying Patterson. The Oline led by Senior Center Jeremiah Hatch, will have to be physical and mean against the foes in the Big 12.
On defense, the Dline is led by Junior defensive end Toben Opurum and Senior defensive tackle Patrick Dorsey, physical play is must from these hogs and with a fairly deep depth chart constant fresh bodies should keep a high motor going against opposing teams. The backers are lead by Senior Steven Johnson, playing the sam backer he is looking to disrupt any playside action and big play is required as the other 2 backers are average at best. In the secondary senior Corner Isiah Barfield has the daunting task of matching up against the opposing teams top wideout. Redshirt Freshman Keeston Terry will be flying around making plays for Coach Hopkins for years to come.

First Win For Hopkins, KU Dominates Opener
Kansas Opens The 2011 Campaign with a 77-24 Blowout
Lawrence, KS -- The season and home opener couldn't have been any better for new Head Coach Hopkins as the Kansas Jayhawks route the visiting McNeese State Cowboys 77-24. The score would leave early viewers puzzled as the first half was actually somewhat of a football game with a 35-17 halftime lead. In fact the game started off shaky for the Jayhawks as a Cowboys defender had made an amazzing play on the ball, picking of KU QB Jordan Webb and taking it to the house for a early 7-0 lead. Coach Hopkins said " I really think a part of it is, It was our first game, everyone including myself had jitters. But I got to credit that young man for McNeese State, he made a great play on the ball and theres not much you can do about an athlete being an athlete."
The Offense for the Jayhawks started off a little shaky, however after QB Jordan Webb found his groove, there was no stopping this Jawhawk offense. Big play after big play and before you know it KU was up 5 scores. QB Jordan Webb completed 10 passes out of 17 for 285 yards and an outstanding 5 TDs. More than half his completions were for touchdowns, 3 of his touchdowns were to Sophmore reciever Chris Omigie, who 3 receptions all for TDs and 89 yards were very efficient. It was a solid day for Sophmore Runningback Mike Sims as he reeled of big play after big play having 3 rushes for 20+ yards including a 66 yd receiving TD, 78 yd TD run, and 31 yard TD run. "The line did a great job securing initial blocks and getting to the second level, cutbacks were there all day. When your line gets after it like they did today, they make my job that much easier. All I got to do is run haha" Sims stated in the locker room after the game.
It was a great defensive effort for the Jawhawks as they hounding the opposing team all night allowing only 72 total rushing yards. Though the Cowboys did exploit them through the air for a brief moment in the game, overall it was a strong defensive performance. They sacked the McNeese State QB 6 times and pressured him most of the day. Safety Keeston Terry said " It was alot of fun getting to run up and down the field and knock around some guys that aren't on your team. Defensively I thought we were playing hard, with intensity and it showed" The Jayhawks forced 4 consecutive 3-and-outs to start the second half. And rode the momentum until the final horn.
The most exciting plays of the night came from Freshman return man Marquis Jackson who had a historical night in which he will probably cherish forever. The exciting young man out of Fort Worth, Texas had 3 return touchdowns on the day. 2 via punt and 1 on a kickoff. "You know its not too often you get even 1 return touchdown and for one guy to have 3 within the same game is just unheard of... I really don't know why they kept kicking him the ball but you know when things are going you way, big plays happen. He had returned a couple in practice and throughout training camp, he practically begged us to put him back there, and I'm glad I did. Man the kid just has an instinct to make plays, he knows when to juke and when to just run. He will be a dangerous player in the future, mark my words." Coach Hopkins said in the post game interview
