Backups Rock as the Gophers Roll
Eskridge and Gray combine for 600 yards of offense as Minnesota wins 49-14
Eskridge ran for nearly 300 yards Saturday
(AP) Minneapolis-St. Paul- "I think they [Gray and Esridge] really surprised everyone today," Garner said in the post-game press conference this afternoon. "They weren't second string by much, and the fact that the huge numbers they put up showed the Big 10 who to watch out for."
Minnesota entered the North Dakota game without starting runningback Duane Bennett, who was out with a pectoral injury for three weeks. The Gophers looked to rely on quarterback Adam Weber to attack through the air, but on a late hit from a North Dakota defensive lineman in the first quarter, Weber had to be helped off the field. So, Coach Garner and his staff had to improvise, sending out sophomore back up QB Marqueis Gray, telling him to run hard, and pass infrequently.
Gray threw for 311 yards and 2 TDs in the rout.
Then they saw Gray throw. The Gophers immediately switched back to their original plan, and let the offense loose on this FCS defense. Gray went 15-20, 311 yards and 2 touchdowns, but the real shining moment was for Eskridge, who put up a Gopher record 296 rushing yards and met the end zone 3 times.
"We just ran our plays real good," Eskridge quoted after the game. "Our offensive line blocked like perfection, and I was able to find the holes they made. Marqueis [Gray] also threw well to the recievers and tight ends, who stayed open almost all game."
Other Gophers shined as well, including tight end Eric Lair, who caught 4 passes for 111 yards, and a 51 yard touchdown, the longest of the game. On the defensive side, sophomore end DL Wilhite had 2.5 sacks, and safety Kim Royston had a pick. Along with Weber's injury, WR Brandon Green is also out for nine weeks with a broken tailbone.
"Our guys are smacking everyone around like its nobody's business. I have a feeling a certain Pac-10 team is shaking in their boots." Garner joked.
The Gophers do face a real test next weekend at home against the 13th ranked USC Trojans

Game Notes
Both teams head into this game looking for momentum heading into conference play. USC is coming off a bye week, while Minnesota a 49-14 win against North Dakota. Both teams are offensive powerhouses with mediocre defenses. Many wondered if Minnesota's injuries would hamper them, but it appears that they won't. However, USC is coming in the better team by a decent margin, and they will score much more often on this weak Minnesota passing defense.
