Troy, AL- A new era of Trojan has begun. A rather unknown name in the collegiate coaching ranks has been tabbed as the new head coach for the Sun Belt's Troy Trojans. Coach Powell was introduced at a press conference earlier today on campus at the football complex.
"It's an honor to be given this chance. The Troy football program has a lot of history and it's time to add to it and take back the Sun Belt."
An alumnus of the University of Alabama, Powell said that he has no plans to pursue an out-of-conference game with the Crimson Tide. The Trojans will however face the Clemson Tigers for their 2011 season opener. The Trojans' conference home opener is against new Sun Belt member, UAB. Along with the Blazers, the Sun Belt also welcomes the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs into the conference. The move to bring on UAB and Louisiana Tech was to supplement the loss of North Texas to the WAC. The rivalry between Troy and the Mean Green will not die though as the two will meet in November at Movie Gallery Stadium.

Players to Watch in 2011
-Corey Robinson(QB): The redshirt sophomore returns for his 2nd season as starting QB for the Trojans. The gunslinger looks to be a huge factor in the Sun Belt player of the year race
-Johnathan Massaquoi(DE): The 4th year junior hopes to follow in the footsteps of Demarcus Ware and have a breakout season that will have him drafted next April. A quick first step, Massaquoi will prove to be a matchup nightmare for opposing left tackles.
2010 Record: 8-5(6-2) 2010 Accolades: Sun Belt Co-Champions; Defeated Ohio 48-21 in New Orleans Bowl
Some facts about Troy Football heading into 2012...
3-3 all-time in bowl games at the FBS level
6-time Sun Belt champions
Division II national titles in 1984 and 1987
NAIA national title in 1968
10 10-win seasons since 1984
Only 9 losing seasons since 1965
Troy is 158-76 since moving up to the FBS level in 1993
1. I'm using Jistic's All-American sliders for PS3 with 8 minute quarters. May move to 9 in 2012.
2. I moved UAB and La Tech to the Sun Belt
3. I moved North Texas to the WAC
4. Recruiting difficulty is on All-American with no assistance from the CPU on anything
5. I'm using PurplePower's rosters which are modified by him using speed edits
6. For the 2012 season, I'm making conference changes. The Mountain West WILL get the Big East's BCS bid. Notre Dame will be joining the Big Ten btw.
Haven't played the first game yet, about to now. I'll have an update and I'm going to do recruiting updates often as well. Any suggestions are welcomed.
Clemson, SC - The Clemson Tigers knew they were in for a tussle with the Trojans after the first series of the game. First year head coach, Alex Powell, had a bold strategy to try and pull off the upset. Right out of the gates it was clear Troy's plan was to keep their offense on the field as long as possible and shrink the game down. Running the play clock down to under 10 seconds on nearly every play took away a lot of plays for the potent Tigers offense and it was almost enough to get the victory for Troy.
The Clemson offense did not take the field but one time in the first quarter. That drive would end in a field goal, the first of two on the day, by Chandler Catanzaro. Clemson would not relinquish the lead at all but the Trojans made things interesting at the end of each half.
Trailing 10-0 late in the 2nd quarter Troy utilized the passing game to drive down inside the Clemson 9-yard line. A few plays later Shawn Southward got into the endzone with 0:39 left in the half. Troy coaches and players had to be thrilled that the game might be just 10-7 at the half. But Clemson wasn't done on offense just yet. Two long passes and a Tajh Boyd scramble put Clemson in position for a field goal with 0:02 left. Catanzaro nailed it putting the Tigers up 13-7 at halftime.
The 3rd quarter belonged to Clemson as their quick strike offense got 2 Andre Ellington touchdown runs, each on 1st down, to go up 27-7 seemingly clinching a victory. The Troy offense struggled in the 3rd quarter as their drives ended abruptly due to holding penalties. On the day, Troy was penalized for holding eight times. As the 4th quarter got underway, the Troy put together a methodical drive ending in a Shawn Southward 22-yard touchdown run on 2nd and 4. The Tigers got the ball back leading 27-14 and immediately made things interesting as Boyd threw an interception on 1st down. A few plays later Corey Robinson connected with Justin Albert as the offense was utilizing the no huddle. As Clemson scrambled to get set, Robinson snapped the ball and fired it quickly to an open Albert in the end zone.
Clemson would salt the game away with another touchdown drive just 40 seconds later. The two point conversion was no good as Ellington was stood up at the 1 yard line. With the win, Clemson improves to 1-0 on the season. Troy falls to 0-1. Next up for the Tigers is a home game versus Wofford.

In this week's edition of Trojan Illustrated: Recruiting, we look at a few of the early targets of Troy and Coach Powell. With zero fullbacks on scholarship coming back, the position looks to be of the utmost importance. Currently, the Trojans are targeting two at the position and as recently as September 1st they both had Troy in their top 3.
Troy is a factor for 2 playmakers at the receiver position as Mike Williams and Lance Campbell named Troy their leader in recent interviews. Both prospects are rated 3-stars by 247Sports. Last week, Campbell received an offer from UAB and the Blazers have since moved up to 2nd for his signature.
On the defensive side of the ball Troy is going after three star defensive end Jeff Goodman. Out of Adamsville High School, Goodman is somewhat undersized at 6'2/228 but the coaches love his potential off the edge. Currently Troy is his leader and only offer at the FBS level. Jacksonville State and North Alabama have also offered.
Another name to keep an eye on is Darren Kendrick from Elba High School. The 237 pound end picked up an offer from Ole Miss last month and is quickly garnering attention from several BCS schools. At the moment, Kendrick claims Troy is his leader. Kendrick is the 75th rated defensive end in the country by 247Sports.
Currently, the Trojans have zero commitments for the 2012 recruiting cycle. With more than 25 scholarship offers out there, that number is sure to change in the coming weeks. For the latest commitments, offers, and official visits stick with Trojan Illustrated.
Troy, AL - After a narrow loss to Clemson, the Troy Trojans needed a confidence building victory. The Jacksonville State Gamecocks provided just that on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Troy scored on their first 4 possessions of the game, jumping out to a 28-7 lead. Shawn Southward scored on runs of 56 and 43 yards in the first quarter and his day was done midway through the second quarter.
The Troy defense rose to the occasion as well after receiving a lot of criticism for giving up 353 rushing yards last week. The Trojans secondary picked off 2 Gamecock passes and broke up another 7 passes. Chris Pickett led the way with an interception and 4 passes defended.
In the 3rd quarter, Trojan punter Will Goggans pinned the Gamecocks deep at their own 1-yard line. Three plays later the Gamecocks were forced to punt from their own endzone. The ensuing punt was blocked and Trojans got their first safety in 5 seasons to make the score 44-14 with 2:00 left in the 3rd quarter.
With the win, Troy improves to 1-1 on the season. The Gamecocks fell to 0-2 with the loss.

Next Up: @ Middle Tenn State(0-3)
Murfreesboro,TN - It was a first half to forget for sophomore quarterback Corey Robinson. The Sun Belt Conference opener at Middle Tennessee State started off as if it were a nightmare for Robinson. Two games into the season, the sophomore had thrown four touchdowns and zero interceptions. Turnover free football is exactly what Coach Powell stressed during the off-season and so far, Robinson had excelled.
The goose egg would not last long in Tennessee however. On the first drive of the game, Robinson attempted an ill-advised pass and Stephen Roberts picked it off. The Raiders drove down the field and put three points on the board. The next drive started out just like the first one, a power running game. Shawn Southward was gashing the Raider defense for four and five yards a pop. The third pass attempt of the game for Robinson came on 3rd and 5. This time Derrick Crumpton stepped in front of the pass and for the second time in three attempts, Robinson was picked off.
The Trojans defense was up to the task again and held the Raiders to a field goal. Two possessions for Troy, two turnovers. But the bright spot was the score was only 6-0 and it was still just the first quarter. The Trojans offense would finally sustain a drive in the second quarter and got on the board with a Michael Taylor field goal to make it 6-3, Raiders.
The no huddle offense proved to be a weakness of Troy in the second quarter as Jeff Murphy dinked and dunked the Trojans up and down the field. Facing a 3rd down at the Trojans 3, Murphy was able to connect with Sancho McDonald for the Raiders first touchdown of the day making it 13-3.
Troy struck back quickly and Robinson seemed to be over his first half slump. The Trojans marched down the field thanks to a hurry up offense of their own. With the ball at the Raiders 25 yard line Robinson dropped and threw a strike to Brett Moncrief but Robinson's bad luck wasn't done just yet.
The pass bounced off Moncrief's finger tips and none other than Stephen Roberts intercepted the pass. With blockers in front Roberts took it 88 yards to the house and the section of Troy fans in the north end zone were stunned. Seventy seconds until half and Troy found themselves trailing, on the road, 20-3.
Miraculously the Trojans responded after the pick six and drove 70 yards capped by an Eric Thomas 15-yard touchdown grab to make it 20-10 at the break. Perhaps a sign of things to come for the Troy offense in the second half.
With momentum seemingly on Troy's sideline after the touchdown right before half, MTSU came out rattled in the 2nd half. First down netted one yard on a quarterback keeper. Second down saw a dropped pass putting the Raiders in a 3rd and 9 hole with Troy's offense foaming at the mouth to get back on the field.
Johnathan Massaquoi put pressure on the Raider quarterback and he got the pass off just in time to an open Sancho McDonald. Getting down to the Troy 18-yard line before being wrestled down it seemed as though this were the Raiders day.
As the crowd went crazy and cameras were locked onto McDonald inside the Troy 20-yard line, trainers rushed out to the MTSU quarterback who had yet to get up. A silence came over the stadium and the next 10 minutes took what felt like an hour. As Murphy was helped off the field, backup Logan Kilgore prepared to step in for the senior.
Adrenaline flowing through his veins, Kilgore came in and connected on a 3 of 4 passes capping the drive off with a 10-yard touchdown pass to his tight end. The point after put MTSU on top of Troy 27-10 with 6:44 left in the 3rd quarter.
Facing an 0-1 start in conference play, the defending Sun Belt champions responded as such. Corey Robinson led his offense down the field hitting Shawn Southward from 3 yards out to make it 27-17. After a three and out, the Trojans got the back and all the momentum in the world. Robinson capitalized yet again with three first down completions on the drive that was ended by a Shawn Southward touchdown run to cut the MTSU down to three.
With Jeff Murphy out for the remainder of the game, backup Logan Kilgore had two tasks in front of him. Don't turn the ball over and make the easy throws. The latter was proving to be a simple task as Troy allowed Kilgore to dink and dunk hoping to limit MTSU to field goals. The former would turn out to be the sophomore's undoing. With the ball in Trojans territory, Kilgore fumbled an option play and Jimmie Anderson scooped up the ball and took it 55 yards to the house. For the first time all day, Troy held the lead at 31-27.
The Trojans would hold off the Raiders suddenly crippled offense and put the exclamation point on this one with a Justin Albert touchdown reception with just under two minutes left in the game. The win improves Troy's record to 2-1 and 1-0 in Sun Belt action. The loss drops the Raiders to 0-3.

Next Up: vs UAB(0-2)
Troy, AL - Typically, rivalry games are full of intensity on both sidelines. On Saturday there was little intensity or passion on the sideline of the green and gold. With their starting quarterback already out for the season, UAB's once promising season is on the brink of disaster.
The Troy University Trojans came out on fire against UAB putting up 27 first half points, the most since 35 first half points in the 1995 contest between the 2 schools. Troy went on to win that ballgame 60-7.
The theme of the night for UAB was turnovers. With Bryan Ellis making his first career start for the Blazers, the consensus was UAB would go with a more conservative approach with the ball. As is often the case with sports, the consensus was wrong.
UAB went with the air attack you would normally see at Legion Field and the price was paid for it. On the day Ellis would throw 4 interceptions and fumble the twice with Troy taking 2 of those to the house. The defensive performance by Troy may have come as a surprise to many after the MTSU debacle, but it came as no surprise to defensive coordinator Marvin Constant.
"After the criticism this defense received for their performance in Murfreesboro, these players wanted to come out and prove they're one of the best in the Sun Belt," said Constant.
The former All-SEC linebacker praised his defensive line for putting pressure on the Blazers rattled quarterback all afternoon. On the day, the Trojans sacked Ellis five times and hurried him another eight times. All-American candidate Johnathan Massquoi brought down Ellis in the 1st quarter to set the tone for the rest of the day.
"Coach challenged us to step up and show our worth. After last week everyone was saying we don't have the defense to win the Sun Belt, so we went out there to prove them wrong," said Massaquoi.
While the defense feasted on the Blazers' offense, the Trojans rushing attack lit up the green and gold from start to finish. All tolled, Troy rushed for 322 yards with 205 of those coming from Shawn Southward. With the performance, Southward is averaging well over 100 yards per game, leading all backs in the Sun Belt.
With the win, Troy takes the lead in the series 5-4. The Trojans are 3-1 in Troy against UAB all-time. On the season, Troy improves to 3-1 and 2-0 in the Sun Belt conference. The Blazers fall to 0-3 and are still looking for that first win of 2011.

Lafayette, LA - When the day began, Shawn Southward had no idea what was about to take place. In fact, he wasn't sure he would even start due to a nagging shoulder injury that caused him to miss snaps in last week's game versus UAB.
The junior tailback ran all over the Cajuns on a rainy day in Louisiana. In a first half where Troy scored 38 points, Southward ran for 169 yards setting a school record for rushing yards in one half. During the halftime break, the press box was abuzz over what could happen in the 2nd half. To break the Troy single game rushing record, Southward needed just 76 yards.
The rushing record and the margin of victory were the only things in doubt during the second half of Saturday's game. The Ragin' Cajuns made things somewhat interesting with a push late in the 3rd quarter. A Chris Masson touchdown pass cut the once 31-point Trojan lead down to 18. UL-Lafayette was a 2-point conversion away from making it a two score game for the first time since it was 14-0 in the first quarter. The Masson pass on target, but dropped by Harry Peoples and with 7 minutes left in the game, it was a three score game still.
The next possession would decide the fate of the single game rushing record. Needing just 12 yards to break it, the consensus among the media was Southward was about to make history. Southward took the handoff on 2nd and 7 carried it from the ULL 40-yard line all the way down to the ULL 19 and the record fell. After 29 years in the record book, 244 yards is now the 2nd best rushing performance in Troy history.
"When I came to the sidelines, the coaches told me I broke the record. I had no idea and had to run back out onto the field to grab the ball so I could keep it," said Southward with a grin on his face.
As the rain came down and the lights grew dim, Troy found their superstar. Someone who could carry the team to new heights never before seen at the FBS level. Behind the efforts of Southward, Troy improved to 4-1 on the season with the lone blemish being at Death Valley versus the Clemson Tigers.
