Re: The Gold Standard: A San Francisco 49er Dynasty

49ers make it two in a row with win against Bucs'

Aldon Smith shows off the pass coverage skills some think he's lacking.

San Francisco, CA -
Today the old axium of "home sweet home" rang true as the 49ers easily disposed of the Bucaneers to the tune of 30-12 at the Stick. Both offense and defense played well in fron tof a sold out crowd espeically Frank Gore who would rush for a gaudy 170 yards on 22 carries and 2 Touchdown. Alex Smith was asked after the game what he thought of Gores performance:

"Well, it's not like this was a nobody running the ball for those types of numbers today. It was Frank Gore, we knew he has this kind of games in those legs of his, they pop out from time to time. Its always great when it results in a win."

Frank was aided by a passing attack that was both was quick and efficient, opening the defense up for draw plays and misdirections that would result on a 7.7 yard per carry average by the end of the day for Gore. Alex Smith played another solid game that should surely easy somes mind about the rumors around town that Smith's contract would be extended for next season. He passed for a strong 260 yards and a touchdown on 18/25 passing. His faviorite target, Vernon Davis would have another great game, pulling in 5 catches for 96 yards and a touchdown.

"Vernon has a fire in his eyes when he's near the end zone, he wants the ball and he wants to score, simple as that, and as long as he keeps playing the way he has, he'll keep being a strong force in this offense" - Coach Harbaugh on Vernon Davis.

Vernon Davis flies over the end zone.

A good sign for niners fans. Michael Crabtree showed up this game...kinda. He seemed to be very conscious of his dropped ball issue, as was Harbaugh, who noticeably had crabtree running a plethra of timing route. The plan worked to an extent, crabtree would lead the team in recpections for the game, with 6 and would pull in 56 yards. Hopefully next week, aainst a high octane Detroit offense, Crabtree can step up and help counter the Stafford/Megatron connection.

Crabtree is finally starting to show some hands.

Defensively the 49ers were very impressive for the most part, holding opposing QB Josh Freeman to 8 yards before the half as well as sacking him 3 times. Every key player of the 49er defense was firing on all cyclinders, once again led by the tandem of Patrick Willis and Justin Smith, ho would combine for 4 sacks and 18 tackles for the game. Aldon Smith had what was defiently his best play of the early season running over offensive tackle Jeremy Zuttah to get to QB Josh Freeman.

Goldson makes a acrobatic interception

The defensive was in control the entire game, keeping the buccaneers on the run when dropping back for a pass, and stuck when going for the run. The Tampa Bay running backs were virtually ineffective when it mattered, especially short yardage situations. Issac Sopoaga and Ray McDonald plagued the backfield overwhelming the interior line and making Josh Freeman's job that much harder.

Patrick Willis wraps up Freeman for his 2nd sack

Another win in the books for the niner is a good day for this guy. Like every game, they could have improved on things (2-10 on 3rd down!?!?), but you as a fan, we'll just have to have faith that Coach Harbaugh will address these concerns in the upcoming week. Next week the 49ers travel to Mo-Town to take on a resurgent Detroit team that looks to put the football world on notice. Can the niners play spoiler for Megatron and company? Can't wait to see.

The season so far has progressed about the way that i felt it would in the beginning of the season. The AFC East is currently hyper competitive with every team primed to make a play to become AFC East champions. The Dolphins are currently my sleeper pick due to the better than expected play of Matt Moore. He's currently 7th in the league in passing yards, and tied with 5 other QBs for the 5th place spot for Passing Touchdowns. Another interesting thing to point out is the mediocre play coming out of the NFC South. With each and everyteam coming out of the gates with a losing reord, the division certainly hasn't looked the way many thought it would.

There isn't really anything weird about the league leaders so far into the year. All of the players on the list are capable and have put up the numbers before. Everyone except Malcolm Flyod who is benefiting greatly from playing with great recievers like Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates. He's more of a product of Phillip RIvers successs than anything.

Alex Smith- Alex Smith has played better than expected, minimilizing his turnovers and really improving his vision in the last 3 games. He's not trying to do to much and is making the smart safe throws that keep the sticks moving. He's found a reliable reciever not named Vernon Davis in Braylen Edwards who's lengthy frame makes a big target for Smith
Frank Gore-Frank Gore has been the motor on this team for years and this year isn't any different. Behind an Offensive line that at some times can be more than shakey, Gore has manage to generate yards an confuse the defense. Look for even bigger numbers from Gore in the following games.
Vernon Davis-Vernon Davis has continued his excellent play from previous years this year. starting the season off eith s strong campaign and acting as a primary target for Alex Smith. He's been the one reciever on the team without drop issues and the fact that he's usually more athletic than the people covering him leads to big plays and big gains.
Patrick Willis-Patrick Willis missed game one of the season due to a injury recived during the pre-season. He's come back though loooking strong and has really helped anchor a defense that looked lost in the first few games. The last 3 games the defense has held the opponet to less than 13 points each game, and thats mainly due to the play of the linebackers, lead by Willis.

Top 3 Stories around the League

1. Cardinals offense soars to #1 Offense

If you asked me at the beginning of the season, what team would have the #1 offense come week 6, i'd probably wouldn't have selected the lowly cardinals who seem to have something going with new accusition Kevin Kolb and much s maligned running back Beanie Wells. Kolb hasn't exactly been the QB Arizona fans have been searching for but he's been more than serviceable currently passing for 1301 yards 7 TDS and 6 INTs. Beanine Wells has played very well as well rushing for 85 att for 418 yards and 2 Touchdowns. The biggest suprise for me was the play of Wide Reciever Early Doucet who is tied for team recptions with Larry Fitzgerald and is leading the team in yards (Albiet only 5 more yards than Fitz). This has all culminated to being the 7th and 8th ranked team in the pass and rushing catorgories respectively. If Kolb can increase his dimsly completion precentage (45%), than this team will be a threat going forward in the season.

2.Baltimore Struggling out the gates

The first 5 games haven't been the best for the ravens, who are currently dead last in total offense. Joe Flacco through 4 games has yet to pass for a touchdown, and the only wins they've gotten on the season were aided by strong defensive efforts against Jets (19-0) and the Titans, without Matt Hasselbeck (16-10). The offesne is ranked 29th in first downs, 29th in points per game, and 31st in the pass. The only saving grace has been Ray Rice who has rushed for 500+ yards and 4 Tds. Next week is a bye week for the Ravens, so hopefully Flacco and Co. can get it together and start generating some offense through the air to take the load off of Ray Rice.

3. Chargers stand alone as sole undefeated team.

Earlier in the week i asked if the Packers were the team to beat coming out of the NFC. Well, i know that the Chargers are the team to beat out of the AFC if they keep up playing like they have to start the season. Led by MVP candidate Phillip Rivers, the Chargers hve played themselves into an undefeated record while outscoring their opponents 148-86. All facets of the offense and defense has been working to perfection, Rivers has been a man possessed currently battling it out with Aaron Rodgers over who is playing the best football in the NFL right now. Running back Mike Tolbert has impressed many gaining 412 yards on the ground and 4 TDs as well as a recieving TD. Malcolm Floyd, Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates have all put up great numbers with Floyd leading the team in recieving yards (420), and Gates and Jackson sharing the RecTD lead (4). Next week the Chargers have a bye week, hopefully they can keep up their strong play once they return.

Key Match-up

Alex Smith, 49ers, QB: Alex Smith and the rest of the offense is up against a suprisingly effective pass defense this sunday in Detroit. A key for success in this game is getting Alex Smith comfortable and relaxed in the pocket. With a players like Ndamaken Suh, Cliff Avril, and Kyle Vanden Bosch on the opposite side of the line, Smith is going to have to make quick reads and take what the defense gives him. He won't have tons of time in the pocket this game.
Season Stats:86/163, 1244 Yds, 9tds /4ints

Vs.

Ndamukong Suh, Lions, DT:Suh has filled his role as the big bruising anchor of this Detroit Lions defensive line better than anyone probably dreamed of when he drafted in 2010. Suh comes into the game with 3 sacks already in the season and doesn't look to slow down. He's a matchup nightmare which opens up oppurtunity for other pass rushers. Not only does he cause confusion on the lion, but that confusion leads to errant throws and turnovers. N. Suh impacts games. His job today will be to upset the conservative throwing Alex Smith enough that the passing game because ineffective. Forcing the load onto Frank Gore.
