Week 1: FCS Southeast @ Rock State

Rock State senior TE Charles Diggs (#86) breaks free from an FCS defender on one of his 3 TD catches. Diggs and the Blue Storm set a school record by scoring 98 points in their season-opening win.

Blue Storm nearly score 100 in season-opening win
C-USA Football News

On the same afternoon that rival Golden Capital was purposely running up 89 points on an unsuspecting FCS team, the Rock State Blue Storm outscored that total but did it in a much more honorable way. RSU's starters exited the game midway through the 3rd quarter, and their backups boosted them to an eye-popping 98-14 win.

"We were not trying to score that much on them," RSU head coach Dave Phillips said. "Our backups played the majority of the 2nd half and many of them were just running plays the way we've taught them. It just happened to get a little out of hand. I apologized to the opposing coach after the game and he said that he understood and that there were no hurt feelings. What Capital did was shameful - we were trying to stay as respectful as possible."

Still, 98 points is a lot to drop on an obvious less-talented team. The Blue Storm has always prided themselves on a strong offensive foundation, and that base ran wild today. Freshman QB Claude Grimes threw a school-record 6 TDs in his first career start as RSU rolled up over 800 yards of offense.

The mix of run and pass plays confused their FCS opponents, opening up wide running lanes and lots of open targets in the passing game. Grimes ran the offense well, and his playaction fakes fooled even the cameramen. The Alaska native threw for 293 yards on only 13-of-18 passing and saw 6 passes go for scores.

Three of them went to senior TE Charles Diggs, who seemed to slip by every single FCS defender with ease. WRs Ben McClellan and Adam Hollis each caught 2 as well.

Defensively RSU pressured the opposing QB all day, picking off 5 passes and numerous sacks. Senior FS Matt Alfred had 2 picks, OLB John Coley took another to the house and sophomore backup DE Jefferson Roberts had 2 sacks.

Week 1: FCS Southeast @ South Texas

Senior QB Jerome Nealy (#12) celebrates his 2nd TD run with sophomore FB Jason Greco (#46). Nealy accounted for 5 TDs in the Gunfighters' 59-14 win.

South Texas thrashes FCS opponent at home, 59-14
C-USA Football News

Senior QB Jerome Nealy threw for 3 TDs and ran for 2 more to lead the South Texas Gunfighters to a 59-14 season-opening blowout of a visiting FCS squad. Their triple-option offense rolled up almost 400 yards on the ground in a solid showing for their 1st game as an FBS member.

It took one failed drive to get the South Texas train in motion, but the scoring barrage revved up quickly. Nealy capped off a 1st-quarter drive with a TD pass to a diving Maurice Hollins, and after the STU defense forced FCS to punt, sophomore FB Jason Greco took an option handoff and went right up the middle for a 47-yard TD scamper.

Up 14-0, Nealy's feet started to do some work. The senior QB shook defenders and dazzled his way to 2 second-quarter TD runs to extend their lead to 28. Their opponents got 2 rushing TDs to close out the half, but it would be the last time they would threaten the Gunfighters.

Nealy threw 2 more TD passes, junior RB Vernon Powers found the end zone on a 46-yard run and Greco caught a TD pass from backup QB Andy Haas to close out the scoring for South Texas.

Nealy only completed 10-of-15 passes for 83 yards, but he made them count with 3 TD passes. He also led the team with 125 yards rushing on 15 carries. Greco, Powers and senior RB Reggie McKinley each added 80+ yards on the ground for STU. Defensively, DE Marquel Branch tallied 5 tackles for a loss and a sack, while MLB Lawrence Riley took an interception to the house but it was called back due to a penalty.

Week 1: #3 Texas @ Southwestern

Southwestern DE Adam Godfrey (#98) celebrates after sacking Texas QB Garrett Gilbert (#7). Godfrey's 2 sacks helped the Blaze nearly pull off a huge upset, but Texas survived 44-38 in overtime.

#3 Texas overcomes serious upset bid, wins 44-38 in OT
C-USA Football News

A wild back-and-forth game saw the Southwestern Blaze, playing in their 1st-ever FBS game, nearly pull off a huge upset of the visiting #3 Texas Longhorns. But despite holding the lead for most of the game, the Blaze fell short at the end when Texas scored the game-winning TD in overtime to win 44-38.

Southwestern, who was picked by experts to finish last in the new Conference USA's West Division, made a very impressive first impression to many. The Blaze led 17-3 early and 17-10 at the half, and despite Texas' many attempts to take over the lead, they never trailed until the game's final play.

RB Marquise Booth was one of the main reasons for the Blaze's early lead and their overall success. Booth ran for TD runs of 80 and 67 yards in the 1st quarter to give SWU a surprising 17-3 lead. The Texas offense continued to sputter throughout the whole half, but they were able to make a dent into the lead with less than a minute left when QB Garrett Gilbert found WR Marquise Goodwin for a 2-yard pass.

Beginning early in the 3rd quarter, the game started to get crazy. RB Cody Johnson tied the game up only seconds after the 2nd half kickoff, taking a handoff 75 yards to the house. Southwestern refused to give in, and Booth again was the catalyst. Booth scampered from 11 yards out to put the Blaze back up 24-17 midway through the quarter. Later, Texas tied it up again when backup RB Tre Newton found the end zone on a 5-yard run.

Heading into the 4th quarter tied at 24, tensions were running high but the Blaze stayed surprisingly calm. QB William Harper directed a long drive, capping it off with a 2-yard dumpoff TD pass to fullback Meade. Gilbert answered right back with a 64-yard toss up the right sideline to WR James Kirkendoll, tying the game at 31.

The teams traded punts, and once again it was Harper leading the Blaze to another score. With just over a minute left, Harper hit TE Josh Avery on a corner route and the bruiser broke 2 tackles on the 49-yard go-ahead TD catch. The crowd was in a frenzy with the upset looming closer, but Gilbert again quieted the fans. With 45 seconds left, Gilbert fired another TD pass to send the game into overtime tied at 38.

Texas won the toss and elected to play defense first. Southwestern's magic seemed to have run out at that point, and a failed field goal put a damper on their chances. When Texas received possession, Gilbert wasted no time in ending the upset threat. The QB fired a 23-yard TD to Goodwin on the 3rd play of the drive to give Texas the win.

Gilbert threw for 443 yards and 4 TDs to guide the Longhorns past the upset-minded Blaze. Johnson added 137 yards on the ground.

For the disheartened Blaze, Booth led all rushers with 220 yards and 3 TDs. Harper threw for 222 yards and 2 TDs without a pick.

Week 1: UMJC @ South Carolina

Freshman RB Marcus Lattimore (#21) runs to the end zone during the Gamecocks' 47-16 win over UMJC. It was an amazing debut for Lattimore, as he broke school records with 298 yards rushing and 5 TDs.

Cadets can't stop Lattimore in 47-16 road loss
C-USA Football News

True freshman RB Marcus Lattimore had one of the best debuts ever, running for a school-record 298 yards and 5 TDs to help the South Carolina Gamecocks blow out the visiting UMJC Cadets in the season opener for both squads. UMJC, playing in their 1st FBS game, could not slow down the Gamecocks' top 2010 recruit and watched painfully as their pass-heavy offense struggled to move the ball.

The Cadets looked pretty bad on both sides of the ball, failing to score a TD until late in the 3rd quarter and giving up a record-setting performance to a player who just graduated high school. Experts pegged UMJC as a serious threat to Lincoln in the East Division title race, but they looked the complete opposite of a title contender today.

Getting off to a bad start happened early for UMJC following an excellent USC punt. Pinned deep in their own territory, the Cadets tried an QB keeper play to give them space but senior QB Derek McGee got tackled in the end zone for a safety. Luckily, the score remained 2-0 heading in the 2nd frame.

But that's exactly when Lattimore began to run wild. The freshman scored on runs of 8 and 6 yards to give USC a comfortable lead, and the two squads traded field goals down the stretch to go into the half with 19-3 score. Less than a minute after the break, Lattimore again broke free from 63 yards out to put the Gamecocks up for good.

UMJC finally found the end zone as time expired in the 3rd quarter, but by then the score was 33-10. McGee fired another TD pass in the 4th quarter, but Lattimore punched 2 more runs into the end zone to complete the scoring.

Lattimore's performance will go down as one of the best debuts ever for a true freshman, and gets the Gamecocks off to a great start. South Carolina will have to figure out what's going on at QB, since both Stephen Garcia and Connor Shaw saw action.

As for the Cadets, they walk out with their collective tails between their legs. McGee threw for 327 yards and 2 TDs, but 2 INTs cost UMJC a chance at making the score close. Despite their struggles, the Cadet defense did pick off 3 passes.

Week 1: Western Tech @ Texas Tech

Western Tech QB B.J. Humphrey (#12) throws a pass versus Texas Tech. Humphrey's 434 passing yards and 3 TDs helped W-Tech knock off the Red Raiders, 42-28.

Falcons outlast Texas Tech on road
C-USA Football News

On special Sunday-scheduled season opener, the Western Tech Falcons traveled to Lubbock and battled the weather and the host Red Raiders but found a way to leave victorious. Junior QB B.J. Humphrey threw for 434 yards and 3 TDs to give W-Tech their 1st win as an FBS program, beating Texas Tech 42-28.

"We knew they were gonna give us a fight," Humphrey said after the game. "We just kept hitting them with the pass, and it opened up lots of options. We were just able to take advantage of them and come out with a win."

Pass the ball they did, as the teams combined for over 100 pass attempts. Texas Tech lost starting QB Taylor Potts early in the contest but backup Steven Sheffield proved to be more than capable of handling the job. Both Humphrey and Sheffield matched each other throw-for-throw but 2 third-quarter TD passes by Humphrey opened up a lead the Falcons wouldn't relinquish.

W-Tech opened the scoring midway through the 1st quarter when FB Dan Norman snuck in the end zone from 5 yards out. After stopping the Red Raiders on the ensuing possession, Humphrey gave them some cushion with a 41-yard strike to WR John Siegel.

Texas Tech wouldn't go away, finding paydirt on Baron Batch's 5-yard run. Midway through the 2nd quarter, Tech tied it up on Sheffield's 1st TD pass. The Falcon offense couldn't muster another score, but their defense picked up the slack. Senior SS Nate Irons stepped in front of a Sheffield pass and took it 36 yards for a big TD. The Red Raiders would answer back to send the game into halftime tied at 21.

The 3rd quarter belonged to Humphrey. The junior QB threw TD passes of 27 and 43 yards, the second one to Siegel to give W-Tech a 35-21 lead. Texas Tech then scored on Batch's 2nd TD run, but they wouldn't threaten again. Late in the 4th, W-Tech RB Thomas West broke to the outside on a simple off-tackle run and scampered 35 yards for the game's final score.

Humphrey completed 31-of-51 passes for 434 yards and 3 TDs, but he also had 3 INTs. Both WRs Paul Babcock and Siegel had over 100 yards receiving, but Siegel's 2 TDs proved to be the difference. Senior DE Mark Lopez recorded 3 sacks while FS Maurice Carrington and CB T. Leonard joined Irons in the INT category with 1 each.

Sheffield threw for 465 yards and 2 TDs to lead Texas Tech, but his 3 INTs proved costly.
