To say that the game between AFC South foes Jacksonville and Tennessee was strange would be a bit of an understatement. It was FG galore for most of the game as Josh Scobee and Rob Bironas combined to kick 6 FGs. But what was really strange was the way the wild way the game ended.
Both teams struggled to find the endzone especially in the first half. For the Titans the struggles stemmed from turnovers. Twice Tennessee moved into Jaguar territory only to be picked off. First the opening drive by the Titans ended when Kirk Morrison jumped the slant route for the INT. Then in the 2nd corer, Young would attempt an out route to Justin Gave however Derek Cox cut underneath and hauled in the interception. The good news for the Titans was the fact their defense was playing just as good as Jacksonville's. The Jaguars like always tried to establish Maurice Jones-Drew early. The Titans were having none of that. The star RB that missed the first meeting had trouble mustering 50 yds on the day as Tennessee was looking for him every play. The result of the tough defenses was a 6-6 halftime score.
Jacksonville's offense was the one to get going in the 2nd half as they put together an impressive 6 minute drive that relied heavily on Garrard picking apart the Titan secondary. To finish it off, MJD ran through two Titans to power in for the 2 yd TD run 13-6. After that it appeared it was going to be all Jags. The Titans offense stalled most every drive while Jacksonville moved the ball. However the Jaguars could only get two more FGs to lead 19-6 with just under 2 minutes remaining in the game. In most situations that is a perfectly healthy lead but not when turnovers happen. Jacksonville faced a 3rd and goal from the Tennessee 9 yd line. Instead of just running the ball and then kicking the FG, OC Dirk Koetter called for the pass. That proved to be a poor decision as Garrard would be hit just as he released the ball. Standing there would be Titan DT Jovan Haye. The big man not only intercepted the pass but somehow rumbled 91 yds back for the score! 19-13. That should have been it as the Titans had only one timeout left and there was only 1:31 left in the game. But then the unthinkable happened, MJD fumbled for the first time all year. RE Jacob Ford hit MJD from behind and popped the ball free. David Thornton pounced on it and the Titans had a shot at the improbable comeback. But Jacksonville would have nothing of it. The Jags defense forced a 4 and out thanks in part by a 3rd down sack by Kirk Morrison. Finally they would simply run the clock out and leave with their 10th victory of the season.

The #1 goal for this offseason for the Jacksonville Jaguars was to lock up budding star TE Marcedes Lewis. They were able to accomplish that this week as the former UCLA star agreed to a 7 year $15.20 million dollar deal. "I am thrilled that we got the deal done," said Lewis, "I have really enjoyed my time here and I wanna stay as long as they will have me." Although Marcedes hasn't had as big of a year numbers wise as he was hoping he still has 33 rec for 427 yds providing a great security blanket for Garrard. Now the Jaguar front office will turn to contract talks with Mike Sims-Walker. The sometimes vocal WR is also in a contract year and has put together an impressive season so far catching a team high 9 TDs and 660 yds on 35 receptions. Sims-Walker though has expressed interest about pursuing FA although the Jacksonville front office has made it clear they want Mike to be around for awhile
*Each week I will be giving a preview of the top 5 players at each position in the upcoming class
1.) Jermale Hines 6'1" 216 lbs (Ohio State) - The 2010 Thorpe award winner heads a solid FS draft class in 2011. Hines put together an outstanding 2010 campaign that shot him up the draft boards. He is well built for the safety position and has the speed needed to play with NFL WRs. Look for Hines to be a top 10 pick
2.) Eddie Whitley 6'1" 195 lbs (Virginia Tech)
- There isn't much separation between Whitley and Hines. Either one could go first for FS and both could end up being top 10 picks. Whitley brings a little more physicality than Hines although Eddie is not as agile as Hines. Whitley has a solid frame and should be a great addition to whomever needs an upgrade at safety
3) Deunta Williams 6'2" 215 lbs (North Carolina) - There is a bit of dropoff in talent after Hines and Whitley but Williams is no slouch. He brings some of the most impressive raw athleticism in this draft. However he does need some coaching to be the cerebral player needed for FS in the NFL. Look for Williams to be a 2nd round draft pick.
4.) Jaiqwuan Jarrett 6'2" 202 lbs (Temple)
- Some scouts think when it is all said and done Jarrett might be the best of the FS's in 2011. Jarrett was far and away the best player on Temple's defense in 2010 earning 2nd team All-American honors. He is a ball hawker that can lay the wood when needed. There are some concerns about his open field tackling ability along with his quickness. Watch for Jarrett to be a 3rd round draft pick.
5.) Ricky Thenarse 6'0" 210 lbs (Nebraska)
- Thenarse is another outstanding player from the suffocating Bo Pelini defense. Thenarse will most likely be a 4th round selection because of his weak hands and slow 40 time. However Thenarse is a very physical defender that does a good job of playing the ball in the air. Given a few seasons he could become a viable option at FS in this league
This week the Jaguars play host to to AFC West leading Oakland Raiders. The Raiders are on a 5 game winning streak thanks the remergance of QB Jason Campbell. The Jaguars are looking to pick up there 11th win of the season and with an Indy loss guarantee themselves a playoff berth. It should be an interesting matchup between a red hot Oakland team and a 2 loss Jaguar team.
Sorry been real busy of late and have had no time for updates. I will hopefully get one in soon. I promise this isn't dead just gotta get through a few really busy weeks
