MAC News

The MAC wins no out of conference games against FBS talent, with Miami University and Central Michigan disposing of FCS squads, the MAC starts to take a nose dive off a cliff. Massachusetts opened MAC action in the week slaughtering the winless and bottom ranked Roadrunners of UTSA. Massachusetts came into this one a two touchdown favorite ended winning by nearly seven touchdowns.

The Ball State Cardinals became Rich Ellerson's latest victims with their 37-14 blowout loss to the option/flex attack that the Black Knights bring to the table. The Cardinals surrendered 273 yards on the ground to the Knights. Buffalo continues to lose, dropping their second game in a row, this time to the Baylor Bears in a 41-16 fashion. The Bears dominated this one from the first snap and it was never close.

Washington held on to their ranking just barely as Kent State continues to raise fits for opposing teams, their 0-2 record isn't an indicator of how well this team has played early on, losing by only a touchdown on a late Washington score.

The Nittany Lions pick up their first victory since their explusion from the Big Ten, scoring twice in the final three minutes to end a deadlock with the Eagles and pull out 35-21 late in the game. The Toledo Rockets following their huge performance against the Kentucky Wildcats seemed to forget to show up for their game against Mizzou and lose 31-7.

Finally, the Wildcats continue to fall, their losing streak extended as they drop a 31-24 game to the Northern Illinois Huskies. The seat must be getting really hot in Lexington, and the Wildcats seem to have no hopes in sight for a quick turn around and a return to a BCS conference.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)

Kearney pulls down a deep pass late in the fourth

Massachusetts stuns rival Connecticut

(Amherst, MA) - Jeremiah Kearney got a real taste of college football today, Connecticut went out of their way to rattle the freshman. They attacked him and hard. They would jam him at the line, cut his legs on running plays and on attempted receptions they used all means possible to take him down including two that appeared to have a face masking call being oddly not called, twisting the freshman to the ground. Yet it was Kearney who boosted the Minutemen past the deadlock and to a 3-0 start, extending their winning streak to six.

"They are hot, they have a linebacker that outruns halfbacks, their offense and defense are built around speed. They make up for their youth with having so many bodies flying around so quickly" Spoke Paul Pasqualoni, who had Connecticut off to one of their best starts until the loss.

McCombs once again caused nightmares for the Minutemen, his 19 carry, 146 yard performance with a single touchdown ensured a repeat performance as the Connecticut Huskies just couldn't do enough. McCombs shoulders none of the blame, his performance practically pristine.

Whitmer struggled with his decision making despite a 13-18 passing day that ended with 200 yards and 1 TD to 1 INT, but his choice to scramble and continually get tangled up with his lineman ultimately cost the Huskies the game. "It's disappointing, he has started strong but he just fell apart" Spoke Pasqualoni following the game.

AJ Doyle continues his streak of no interception games, it also helps that his attempts are down to nearly half of where they used to be as the offense seeks to reinvent itself as a spread running attack and Koch has stated an interest towards moving to a Pro Style offense through the end of the season.

Butler had 121 yards on 23 attempts, but none bigger than a 72 yard rush in the second quarter to bring the Minutemen back into a game that the Huskies looked to be in control of. Butler turned in his first one hundred yard performance, but the team would finish below one hundred yards with Doyle and Bedell finishing in negative yards. "Butler was definitely the MVP of the game for us, he had one of the biggest runs in school history and swung momentum back in our favor" Said Koch.

Michel led the team with five receptions and finishing with 124 yards, he himself would also grab a long touchdown reception, his coming on a slant route that he would break free and outrun a slow Connecticut secondary. Danska, Beck and Houston each added a single reception.

Paul Holt has two consecutive games with an interception the recruiting class from a year ago truly stepping up in a huge way for this season. The Minutemen extend their winning streak to six, quietly moving up in the conference as they open up MAC play with a date against Buffalo, last season the Minutemen pulled away their only blowout of the year when they defeated the Bulls, they will be seeking revenge.

Things are getting wild here in Amherst, on the heels of a six game winning streak dating back to last year, fans are starting to get excited. We eased our way through out of conference play if you could call it that. We won two games by a combined five points, although picking up the W against Connecticut will do a lot for our fanbase and the program.

The UTSA game shocked me, it was the product of playing one of the lowest ranked teams in the country. We've been helped with a fairly easy strength of schedule, our best win coming against the Huskies and with us opening MAC play, an 8-4 finish is definitely a goal. A three game improvement on last year would be huge.

Phillip Henderson may be the biggest pull from the 2012 recruiting class, he fit into every position on defense and was a starter at every position besides free safety, he wouldn't of fit in well on the D-line but he is making the linebacker spot his home. He has the speed of a corner and strong enough to be compared to a few FBS starters. His quick speed and ability to change directions wreck havoc..

AJ Doyle is on a two game no interception streak and the longer we can continue that the better. Our running game isn't statistically great, but it is doing enough to keep us ontop, we are 3-0 after all. We have several recruits interested and I can honestly say we are much better off now than we were when I came in.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)

Michel drags in a pass on his way to the endzone

Two streaks extended

(Amherst, MA) - In front of a loud crowd, several recruits in attendance, the Minutemen have done what they have been doing for the past seven games. They just win. The Bulls couldn't keep up and surrendered 31 first half points that ultimately would be enough to just stem over a late rally and keep the Minutemen undefeated on the season.

The game was odd, turnovers were huge against the Bulls who suffered seven all on interceptions. "It was crazy, we had guys pulling in balls that weren't even in position to make plays, their quarterback.. he just didn't play well at all" Spoke Koch. It says something when you pass for 476 yards and the opposition says your bad.

Doyle ended his streak at eleven quarters with a lone interception in the third quarter of this one, Doyle would post a solid day with 15/23 for 205 yards with a pair of touchdowns and a 65% completion percentage, his totals at this point much improved over last year. Pagel in limited late duty would complete his only pass for thirty-six yards to Jeremiah Kearney.

Justin Butler very nearly broke the century mark, a late run getting broken up in the backfield slipped him just shy of the mark. AJ Doyle and Stacey Bedell finished in negative yardage with Doyle taking a sack in this one that knocked his rushing totals lower.

Blake Houston led the receiving attack which only saw four receivers make a catch, Jeremiah Kearney making another terrific performance out of the slot with five receptions for ninety-eight yards and a touchdown, while Michel added four more for fourty four yards. Justin Butler caught a single pass but would get tackled in the backfield for negative yardage.

For the first time this season, Phillip Henderson didn't lead the Minutemen in tackles and was actually sixth on the team, he didn't break up any tackles in the backfield and caused no sacks or turnovers. Despite this, seven different Minutemen across the first and second unit pulled in a single interception each, in what became a game that was cringe inducing.

Onto Buffalo, Michael went 21-54 completing a mere 38% on a day where his team relied on him as the Minutemen once again surged early. Despite the fact he threw seven interceptions, the Bulls kept him in the game and he ended up rebounding to throw for 476 yards and four touchdowns.Star halfback Oliver had his own struggles, rushing 12 times, his blocking was poor and he managed only 40 yards (3.3) where as his backup (Murie) put up an 8 YPC but only had rushed the ball twice.

Gordon led the Bulls in receptions but it was Neutz who of his four receptions two would be scored for touchdowns, establishing himself as a deep threat and breaking the century mark with 141 receiving yards on the game. Lee finished with 120 and Hughes was just shy of the century mark at 94 yards, this unit would also combine for eight drops, further showing the futility of the squad.

The Buffalo Bulls watch their losing skid extend while the Minutemen extend their winning streak, their records an exact opposite of eachother, the Minutemen 4-0 travel to Happy Valley to face the remnants of the Nittany Lions program, while the 0-4 Buffalo Bulls will bring Northern Illinois home in hopes of that elusive first victory.

Kentucky continues their historic fall, Massachusetts keeps on winning and the Sunbelt picks up a big victory over the Mid-American Conference. The roar of college action dies down as the stadium lights dim in wait of another week of college football action.

Massachusetts started out blowing away the Bulls of Buffalo but ended up nearly allowing a comeback. The Bulls seven interceptions is a school record for most thrown in a game, a dismal record for a dismal performance. It's tough to see the Minutemen holding on though if there was another five minutes, the Bulls came on very strong at the end.

The remains of Penn State barely held on to knock off the winless Golden Flash of Kent State. Silas Redd who ultimately decided to remain a Nittany Lion would put up a solid game, putting 145 yards for a 7.2 average, he however would be shut out of the endzone in this close matchup.

Kansas State suffered fits from the Chippewas and it would take 21 unanswered points in the fourth to inevitably blow out the Chippewas who hung tough for three quarters, an inspiring performance for a team seeking rejuvenation.

Toledo ended their one with skid with a 34-31 victory over Patriot League affiliate, the Air Force Falcons. The Falcons couldn't hold off a Rocket rally and their option attack would be shut down in overtime, Toledo knocking in a game winning field goal to beat the service academy.

The Ragin Cajuns traveled to Akron to take on the Zips, the Sun Belt's notoriously bad out of conference record came into play in this one, but the Cajuns would actually bolster their record after falling behind 28-21 after leading the entire game. The Zips would be stunned at home, allowing two touchdowns in the final five minutes to stop their bid for retaining a winning record, falling below .500.

Despite the fact that the Wildcats have gone through half of their conference schedule winless, the Wildcats put up a fight against Will Muschamp and the Florida Gators, the Wildcats roared back late and nearly embarrassed the Gators in Lexington.

The Broncos winless streak has extended, their quiet bid for the Big Ten that was ultimately denied looked to work very well for the conference, with the Broncos coming out extremely lackluster in their showings, 47-14 in favor of the Hawkeyes.

In a battle for an early jump in conference play, the Eagles brought in Northern Illinois and very nearly surrendered a late loss to the Huskies program who is looking to three-peat as the MAC champions. A bitter feeling but it doesn't disqualify them from a shot at the title.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)

Are the Minutemen for real?
Associated Press

Are the Minutemen real? The hot button question as the nation looks for that new Boise State to root for, now that Boise State is one of the bad guys (joined a BCS conference). An interesting option comes up when the Minutemen are named. They are undefeated, leading their conference and have beaten two Big East squads already, but now is not the time to be crowning them.

The Minutemen benefit from one of the easiest schedules in the country. Their opponents have a combined record of 12-32 (27%) which means this team from a year ago (5-7) has a very high chance of running the table. Of their four games, two teams are winless (San Diego State and Buffalo). UTSA has beaten a Marshall squad that has been helpless and an FIU program that is no where near the level they were at a year ago. Connecticut hasn't beaten a team that to date has won a game. Their losses coming to 4-0 Massachusetts and 3-1 SMU, their victories? Buffalo (0-4) and Western Kentucky (0-4).

The Minutemen will probably cause some noise this year, but are they a great team? No. AJ Doyle has shown his inexperience numerous times and after the Penn State game in which the Minutemen are favored to win but only by a spread of three points, They will only have three other games where the opponents aren't helpless. Miami, Northern Illinois and Bowling Green (whom received three votes in the latest coaches poll). It's not a good thing when 'the tough stretch' of the schedule includes a team at 1-3, and the grouping is 5-4 as a whole.

Massachusetts can thank the oddly stout defense, Which despite an abysmal ranking in passing, has the toughest running defense in the nation and the highest turnover differential. Neither of those stats will hold, the Minutemen aren't good enough, simple and honest. They may play for the MAC championship, they may cause some issues come Bowl selection time, but they simply aren't good enough.

The defense has the most sacks in the nation by a wide margin, which will not hold up, tied for the most fumbles and is running away with the lead for interceptions (a by product of so many starting athletes on the defense) In terms of points allowed, the defense is middle of the pack, and no one in college football has surrendered more passing yards than the Minutemen. The Minutemen also sit at sixth in rushing yards allowed despite holding the best average.

Expect the Minutemen to compete for the MAC title, they have too much of a jump to not expect that, but this is not the mid-major powerhouse that Boise State and TCU were, they are several years off from that. Once they have a quarterback or running back that can take over games that will change. Until their offense can keep up and become dominating rather than just acceptable than they will be a true squad to fear.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)

Doyle walks off the field after one of his several interceptions

The streak ends here; 7-41
Seven straight victories has come to an end, traveling to Happy Valley for a not-so-happy game. The crowd roared as the team most commonly referred to as the 'remnants of the Lions' took to the field, their defense had a few key members stay and halfback Silas Redd opted to conclude his career at Penn State and he would prove to be a big factor in this game. In the end, the Minutemen saw the formula they used all season be turned right around on them, forcing turnovers and a lot of them. Stifling defense that keeps the opposing offense rocked, the Lions offense even had a decent showing.

The score was actually zero-zero at the end of the first but Penn State would rattle of 27 unanswered and would never look back, added an extra fourteen in the final frame to extinguish the fire that had lit itself under Massachusetts. The Minutemen got a quick dose of reality after a dream start to the season. The message was loud and clear, there is a lot of work to be done.

AJ Doyle looked like the Doyle of the old, his 18/35 (51%) and 203 yards were very well established, what stands out though was his 1TD/7INT that ultimately saw him at a terrible -6 on the day, after a streak of no interceptions and tossing only one a week ago, the flood gates opened and Doyle couldn't keep up with the current.

Suffering issues on the ground early on, Justin Butler managed only twenty yards, the Minutemen abandoning the run fairly early in hopes of bring themselves back into this one, AJ Doyle added seven yards after removing sack yardage from his totals. Michel piled on an extra thirty-four on a fumble recovery.

Speaking of Michel, he led the team in all major categories, with five receptions, sixty eight yards and one touchdown. Blake Houston would set up the Michel touchdown (which was the only Minutemen score of the game) after catching a deep slant and being dragged down after a 52 yard gain by the safety. Butler would add fourteen yards on three receptions and Danska added twelve more. Jeremiah Kearney would try to bring back the magic he had in the early season but it just did not work out.

The defense wasn't anything too special, but despite the blowout, the only thing that took a real beating was their PPG average. Turnovers continually put the Nittany Lions into great field position and usually gave fits to the Minutemen.

Maynard would go 10/15 tossing a whole 109 yards with a lone touchdown shot, 66% completion rate is solid but he didn't get asked to throw many balls either. Silas Redd tore apart the Minutemen topped rated rush defense for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter that sealed this one. Quarterback, Lucas Maynard a three star recruit added 26 yards on the ground.

Freshman receiver Maurice Lehman led the team with four receptions and fifty three yards, seven other receivers added one reception a piece. It was Rivers who pulled in the lone touchdown pass from the freshman quarterback, the rebuilding offense had a very quiet aerial attack.

The Minutemen fall to 4-1, still onto one of the best seasons in school history after rushing out of the gate. Despite the loss, the Minutemen hold a five game win streak at home, welcoming the Golden Flash to Foxborugh in what should be a rebound game for the Minutemen.
