Iowa State celebrates their upset of the Longhorns
Upset weekend leaves the state of Texas in shambles
Four ranked teams from the state of Texas entered play on Saturday morning, all in matchups they were favored by at least a touchdown to win. that number falls to two, as all four ranked Texas schools lost in their matchups. The upsets caused all kinds of mess in the Big 12 South which now has a 1-4 Red Wolves squad tied for second place and unranked 3-2 TCU at the top spot. To say this weekend was anything short of crazy was an understatement.
In a not-so surprising upset, the Sooners brought down the Red Raiders who came out of the gates firing on all cylinders uniting under true frosh, Derrick Whitaker who is their new signal caller. Their 3-0 run came to a screeching halt when they traveled to face Oklahoma, the offense was completely stifled and the defense overwhelmed and Oklahoma won by eighteen, a firm win. The Sooners have been underachieving in recent years, this win might finally put them back on the right track.
The next loss for the state of Texas came in the form of a 49-54 blowout loss to the high octane offensive attack of the SMU Mustangs. SMU officials have publically stated they are unhappy with the Big 12's decision to choose North Texas over SMU and this win strikes a blow to the core of the conference, TCU and Texas have been battling for supremacy since their inclusion into the Big 12, this loss is a massive curveball, but still allows TCU to hold onto the top spot thanks to the loss coming out of conference, their ranking wouldn't survive.
Houston joined the list of Big 12 North casualties on this inter-divisional weekend and the Cougars coming off three victories over AQ programs came to a screeching halt when Kansas came to town, the Jayhawks previously 1-3 improved to 2-3 while knocking the Cougars to 3-1, handing them their first loss. The Cougars face Kansas State next week, the Wildcats are undefeated and the favorites of that matchup.
Fiinally, in the biggest blow to Texas, the Longhorns dropped a 21-24 contest on a late field goal, that sent the previously #4 Longhorns all the way down to #14, the Longhorns were devastated, the Cyclones had come to Austin, 21 point underdogs and walked away, three point victors. The Longhorns offensive attack only preformed slightly below average from their previous performances to day and their defense allowed a season high point total.
Upsets occurred outside of the state of Texas as well, Nick Saban watched as the Ole Miss Rebels held off a furious Bama rally, knocking off the previously second ranked Tide in their own territory. In a week with several notable upsets, the Big 12 watched it's divide shrink as the North ruled the day, the Tide slipped down in their race to win the SEC and with over half of the season remaining, the craziness is going to get wilder as we approach the end.

NCAA Football Rankings - Coaches Poll - Updated: Oct 4, 2015
The fireworks went off much like last year when the Longhorns and Raiders did battle, there was a notable difference in the squads of this year and last year however. The Longhorns were a much better team making a national title run, this year their running attack is much weaker, the squad's secondary was shredded due to the draft and graduation and the Red Raiders have progressed just as well as Mack Brown's Longhorns.
A disastrous first quarter mean't doom for the Longhorns who truly never were able to recover, on the very first play, Longhorn defensive back, Bryson Echols (senior captain) slipped while covering Derek Edwards, by the time he recovered Edwards was ten yards downfield with the ball in his gasp, Edwards blazing speed was showcased as the very first play went eighty yards and the Raiders never relented. After a stop, the Raiders drove downfield again and on third and long, Derrick Whitaker found Leroy Bostic on a slant in the middle of the field wide open, the catch and run would be good for another score. Two plays later on a screen play, junior corner Doug Andrews would swat down a pass that would be ruled a lateral, he scooped up the loose ball and ran it in twelve yards for the score, 21-0 and the Lubbock crowd was ignited.
The first half would end at 35-7, the Red Raider faithful were going wild and the Longhorns looked lost. Connor Brewer had connected with Sanders on a slant for the Longhorns first score and the Red Raiders responded by connecting on a short dump pass to Leroy Bostic who took it 23 yards for the score. The game actually would stay wide apart in the third, Texas Tech would score again with Derrick Whitaker connecting with Jared Smith on a screen, Smith would turn up field and run it in from forty yards out thanks to solid blocking on the outside.
It took until the fourth quarter for the Longhorns to ignite and by then it was too late. Texas outscored the Longhorns in the fourth 21-3 and ultimately 28-10 in the second half. Connor Brewer hooked up with Sapp on a slant, Merritt would miss the tackle and he would go untouched into the end zone. Burning the clock with DeAndre Washington on the ground, they would get into Longhorn territory setting up a 34 yard field goal.
From there the Longhorns would pile on fourteen points but their last drive would burn too much time, Connor Brewer added two more touchdown passes with scoring throws to freshman wideout Adam Davenport and star wideout, Cayleb Jones. Jones pulled in a bullet pass in between four bodies (one Longhorn and three Red Raiders) in an impressive showing. The Longhorns would manage to get the ball back on the onside kick, but they would take an incompletion and a sack to close out the game.
Texas falls to 3-2, two consecutive losses for the first time in over three years. The Red Raiders after their embarrassing loss to the Sooners righted the ship against a top level opponent. The Longhorns are quickly falling out of pace for the Big 12 South, their throne could belong to someone else at the end of the season if they don't turn things around and fast. The Longhorns were missing top running back Johnathan Gray (341 yards, 6.2 YPC) and backup Daje Johnson (JR) who are recovering from a High ankle sprain and Torn tricep respectively, forcing the third string back into the starting role.
I'm considering calling this dynasty quits, starting over with a new one after I push out the newest OS Community rosters and using the sliders I have now which are working beautifully.
Still not 100% sure, I appreciate the following though!
