MAC News

MAC Conference play continues with a key upset this week that changes the outlook of the conference championship game. Starting at the bottom, the Minutemen knock off the Akron Zips 37-20 in an aerial defunct game. While Eastern Michigan went home and beat up on their rival, Central Michigan in a 41-14 blow out victory. Alex Gillette tossed five touchdown passes on the day.

Miami University keeps their slim bowl hopes alive while adding a little more pressure to Kent State by blowing out the Golden Flash 42-21, this game proved to be fairly pivotal, the Redhawks need to win out to even be considered for a bowl game, where as the Golden Flash are looking for that elusive sixth victory.

Toledo just barely managed to avoid being on the wrong end of an upset, when 3-7 Ball State came to town and Toledo being a three touchdown favorite, they would have to rally to 17 unanswered points to pull out a victory that eliminates the Cardinals from post season participation. Bowling Green is unable to keep up with the one loss Bobcats who aside from their one loss to Massachusetts have looked unbeatable in conference and easily navigated through their out of conference schedules. With two games left they are eying a potential thirteen win season.

Finally, in a huge upset, the Western Michigan Broncos succumb to the Buffalo Bulls, on a cold snowy day in New York. The Bulls despite allowing Carder to toss 300+ yards with no interceptions absolutely shredded the Broncos defense on the ground for 256 and three touchdowns, a huge win that could have this projected eleventh place finisher thinking about bowl births. Two more wins nearly clinches one.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)

Doyle drops back to pass

Two in a row!

(Amherst, MA) - The Minutemen pulled out fast and early against the favored Bulls and ended up with a blowout victory. "We had a gameplan and we stuck to it, things worked out really well, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about today's performance!" Said Tyler Koch as his players pulled him off the field to celebrate. The Minutemen improve to 4-7 on the season and have far surpassed preseason expectations, winning this game not only helps now, but the future of the program with seven recruits in attendance in this snowy contest.

AJ Doyle has been the center of criticism throughout the year and rightfully so, he had been a turnover machine. Today though, those woes were a thing of the past. The freshman quarterback finished with a 60%+ completion percentage and threw no interceptions and did not fumble once. "It was just one of those days where things went right, I had a good feel for the ball and I was prepared. I've been working out routes with receivers and we have them down good" Spoke the freshman quarterback.

Deion Walker was the man that Buffalo just had no hopes of containing, scoring twice in the second quarter, the first was on a slant where he broke free and outran the safety to the endzone, tossing the football into the home stands. The second came on third and three, the play call was a goalline fade and Deion [Walker] had a solid stutterstep that sent the safety crashing inside and the beautiful lob was pulled down and Walker trotted into the endzone easily. His twelve receptions and 158 yards and two touchdowns are all career highs, the senior receiver had a phenomenal outing. The rest of the offense combined for 11 receptions, one less than Walker.

Alan Williams and Michael Cox were at full health for this one and they definitely came to play, Michael Cox finished the game with 139 yards and a 6.6 YPC average, while Alan Williams picked up 48 yards with a 3.6 YPC and a late touchdown on a leap over the offensive line. AJ Doyle quietly added 12 yards on four rushes along with his touchdown run in the first quarter. The offensive line did a great job, recording four pancakes while only allowing two sacks a small total for where they had been at during the season.

There was no true defensive stand out, the whole unit overachieved, recording two sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery the defense is as much responsible for the win as the offense was. Alongside this, a beautiful punt led to another safety, the first time in school history that the program has recorded a safety in back to back games.

The gameplan used against the Bulls was simple, score early and ball control and it worked. Jumping out to a 24-3 lead allowing the emphasis to come off the ground game and force Zordich into the air, his 42% completion percentage and 2 interceptions were a good representative of how it worked out. Oliver only managed nine carries, the half back has been drawing attention from Pro Scouts, and showed why with a 7.7 YPC, but when they were down big the gameplan shifted off the ground and that took away the only true offensive weapon the Bulls had as they mainly utilized a mid-range passing attack which proved ineffective. The Bulls receivers added six drops, which further deteriorated their offense, the cold weather was just too much.

The Minutemen will close out their season in Amherst, facing the three win Chippewas in what will prove to be a quiet game, neither team is stellar and with only one player even a fringe NFL prospect (Walker) on either squad, it will be Central Michigan's farewell to Ryan Radcliff as another new era will start on a program that hasn't achieved much lately.

MAC News

A good slate of MAC action this week but would leave no upsets on the table, the closest to an upset would be the Massachusetts victory over Buffalo in a 33 to six game, but that result was from solid gameplanning and planning against how one dimensional the Bulls were, they managed to use the game clock to take out the dominant part of their offense.

In a low scoring affair, Bowling Green would finally pickup win number seven while Kent State watches their losing streak continue. Kent State now requires a win in their last game when they are 0-3 since hitting five wins, the seat could be warming up. Miami continues to surge, managing to knock off the Chippewas who still hold only one conference victory but have a fairly good shot at doubling that on Saturday against the Minutemen.

Western Michigan claims the state of Michigan in the MAC with their 35-13 victory over Eastern, closing out their regular season at 8-4 and with three MAC losses, will be withheld from the MAC championship. Northern Illinois continues to refuse to lose, welcoming their rival in Toledo, to Dekalb where they hit over thirty again, winning by ten in this one.

Closing out the MAC slate for the week is the Ohio Bobcats who knocked off the Ball State Cardinals in a runaway fashion. Regardless of the final week, the MAC Championship is set, the Northern Illinois Huskies will face the Ohio Bobcats in Detroit in a rematch of last years title game.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)

Alan Williams follows his blocking to a clear path into the endzone

Minutemen hold off late rally and finish the season on three game win streak

(Amherst, MA) - The Minutemen loved playing at home all season, their 4-1 record was a pretty clear representation of that. Amherst claims another victim despite a late rally very nearly tipped this one in favor of the Chippewas. It would be the Minutemen who ultimately conclude the season on a high note, winning their last three and finishing .500 in the MAC and very nearly .500 on the season.

The Minutemen overcame two interceptions from Doyle and a sub-par conversion percentage (3-8 3rd, 1-3 4th, 0-1 2 pt) to hold on against an upstart Chippewa squad. Special teams came on big in this one, the Minutemen allowed zero special teams yards all game, continuously provided bad field position to their opposition which played a large part in their firm victory.

The Chippewas made no mistakes, no turnovers, decent passing and ground day, but decent wasn't good enough, it fell just short of knotting the squads at 4-8 on the season, but like so many times this season, the Chippewas came up just short.

Doyle went 20-31 for 234 yards with a pair of touchdowns and interceptions, added 48 on the ground and aside from one great defensive play and a WR tipping a pass up, he had a terrific day, a strong end to his freshman campaign. Alan Williams quieted his critics around campus pulling off a 114 yard 1 TD performance in the final game of his career, also breaking off two runs of more than twenty-yards.

Colarusso led the team in receiving by a wide margin, his 8 receptions would require the next best three receivers combined to best and his 128 yards were more than the entire remainder of the team combined, outshining his senior counterpart, Deion Walker by a wide margin in this one.

Paul McIntyre ended his career on a high note, his eight tackles and one for a loss helped keep the Minutemen on top and Birt making the start at strong safety helped quiet a few of his own critics with another strong outting when he was called out in the preseason as being a glaring weakness.

Ryan Radcliff piled on a solid start throwing 20/28 for 268 yards and a touchdown, out performing his counterpart easily. The senior quietly ended a strong career at Central Michigan who will once again be required to reload and restart, expectations won't be very high for this team next season. Tipton had a terrific ground game with 105 yards on 15 rushes with a touchdown, his performance played a big role in this offense which at times struggled despite the starting tandems strong performances.

Southworth led the Chippewas in receiving with four receptions (tied) and 83 yards, but it was Wilson who was responsible for the touchdown reception off the pass from Radcliff. The offensive line managed one pancake while surrendering two sacks but also opened up a good amount of running lanes for Tipton.

The Chippewas end their season at 3-9 and 1-7 in conference play, a season that seemed like a bowl bid would be possible ended dismally, while Massachusetts blew past expectations and finished at 5-7 and 4-4 within the MAC, Koch is even on the short list that includes Ron English, Dave Doren and Frank Solich for MAC Coach of the Year.

MAC News

The MAC concluded its final week of play with the championship game already figured out and left only a few teams jostling for position into a bowl game for the upcoming post season. The MAC Championship representatives split their games with Northern Illinois dropping a 17-0 contest to the Eastern Michigan Eagles while the Ohio Bobcats complete the Golden Flashes collapse as they fall to 5-7 and will miss the post season after a fast start.

Miami University picked up a bowl birth with their 40-14 throttling of the Ball State Cardinals, Zak Dysert passed for 431 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, as the Redhawks cross their fingers and hope to get into the post season. Akron managed to upset Toledo in what ended up being a fairly meaningless game. Toledo despite finishing bowl eligible saw their preseason favorite to win their division falter as they would only manage to be .500 in the conference. Buffalo improves to .500 in both the conference and overall with their 24-3 blowout over the Bowling Green Falcons who fell to 3-5 in the MAC. Buffalo is a team that could cause issues in the post season if they can establish their ground game.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)

Massachusetts ends historic first season

The preseason was a blur of action in Amherst, bringing in a new head coach, accommodating facilities, recruiting, restructuring the athletic department and working out a deal with Gilette Stadium in Foxborough, this group had almost no expectations of success. Located in a wasteland of recruiting talent, playing in a no-name conference, with players that didn't even manage a winning season at a lower level, the Minutemen did the unthinkable, they went out and won.

Projected as winning 0-2 games, they not only blew past that, they were a few plays going slightly differently from a positive season, the Minutemen concluded their season at 5-7, but as the clock ticked down to 0:00 in Foxborough, the crowd was electric. Despite the bitter cold with negative degree weather, the crowd came at well over twenty-thousand to watch their Minutemen end the season on a three game streak, which ties Miami University for the longest active winning streaks (neither team made the post season).

This team not only won, they liked to do it a lot at home, their road record was atrocious, but the fans flocked to Foxborough to Gilette stadium to see their team play, knowing there was a good chance of victory, even an upset like when they knocked off Ohio was possible, Gilette Stadium became a haven of sorts, outside those confines, nothing mattered. It didn't matter that the team had a losing record, they won in Foxborough. It didn't matter that their turnover differential dipped as low as -10, they won in Foxborough. It didn't sting as bad to lose to Connecticut, they won in Foxborough. It's a repeated trend across all sports, you have to defend your home. The Minutemen, much like their namesake did just that.

Freshman quarterback stepped up to a difficult task, bringing this team into the FBS as a starter, his confidence would be tested continually, but he always came back. Even after being pulled in some games, he came back practicing hard and earned his spot as a starter. He finished the season averaging 213.7 yards per game with a 51% completion percentage, finishing -7 in the TD/INT battle is the stand out stat, but if he manages to improve next season, to even get much closer to even, this team jumps from a sub .500 team to an upper tier member in the MAC.

The rushing attack by many was coined anemic, through the first four games they managed a total of two hundred yards, but the unit as a whole would meld and put together a respectable turnaround. Michael Cox led the way with 721 yards and five touchdown rushes, Alan Williams the preseason starter would falter from his early season performances and fall short of the half-century mark, after being coined as an easy 'thousand yard rusher' in the preseason.

Julian Colarusso blossomed in the absence of Deion Walker, Colarusso finished leading the team with 38 receptions for 741 yards and eight touchdowns, at one point leading the MAC in touchdown receptions and his yards per reception is outstanding. Doyle made a lot of mid to long range shots and a lot of times it was Colarusso that was on the receiving end of that. Deion Walker despite missing a month due to injuries fell just one reception shy of Colarruso while falling over two hundred yards behind. His physical abilities aren't amongst the best, but his hands were solid and he proved to be a valuable target.

The offensive line surrendered 32 sacks while being part of the 94th ranked rushing attack in the nation, the line was plagued with holes and inexperience. A solid recruiting class will bolster the line as will another year of practices and experience. The offensive line will need to rebound big next season.

Defensively, Perry McIntyre concluded the season earning All-Mac honors and even making the semifinalist in two defensive awards, he ended up missing out on national glory but his absence will be felt next season for the Minutemen whose defense was among the lowest quarter, will have to replace it's top two tacklers. The other being Darren Thellen, fellow All-MAC selection managed ninety tackles on the season, adding an interception and over a dozen broken up passes.

The special teams unit led by Brandon Levengood with the place kicking duties had an odd season, he only kicked nine field goals all season and missed one, his length isn't very long seeing as his longest field goal was of 39 yards, it's a reasonable explanation as to why the Minutemen will be bringing in another kicker in on scholarship for next season. The positives though was he was perfect up until they played Buffalo where a kick wound up well short albeit completely accurate. Jeff Strait had a much better season, averaging 40.1 yards per punt with a 33.4 net average, he also was a key part of two safeties recorded by the Minutemen defense, knocking two punts within the five yard line and an additional eleven more within the twenty, he did knock seven balls into the endzone however. The special teams unit wouldn't score all season but also did not allow a score all season.
