Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)
Massachusetts Minutemen 2013 Media Guide Page 3 Schedule and Positional Battles 2013 Schedule
Positional Battles Quarterback AJ Doyle (SO) vs Kellen Pagel (SR) This is a tough decision for Tyler Koch as he heads into the 2013 season. Last year, AJ Doyle showed signs of brilliance and was even in the top fifty for yards in the nation. The downsides were that his yardage totals were slightly inflated from Massachusetts falling behind early, as well as that it was an extremely pass happy offense. When asked to shoulder the burden, he turned in a set of rough weeks that included his completion percentage dipping into the upper twenties. His athleticism and youth have Koch struggling to decide. Kellen Pagel comes into this season with four touchdowns and an interception looming over his head from a year ago. His four touchdowns coming against a helpless Indiana Hoosier squad that had been on a thirteen game losing streak. His interception came at a key point and his lack of athleticism made him lose his projected starting slot last season. Projected Winner: AJ Doyle Halfback Justin Butler (FR) vs Stacey Bedell (RS-FR) vs Jordan Broadnax (SO)[/b] This backfield was a source of scrutiny last year, but spending the bulk of spring practices emphasizing the ground game, Tyler Koch brought in Justin Butler from Canada and two players coming off their redshirt seasons will all be competing for the head job. Butler albeit the slowest of the bunch, is the best at shaking tacklers, while Bedell comes into the unit as the middle ground runner, with Jordan Broadnax bringing up with pure athleticism and solid elusiveness, out of spring practice though, Butler was impressing and Broadnax was getting special teams snaps. Projected Winner: Justin Butler Defensive Back Antoine Tharpe (SR) vs Randall Jette (SO) This positional battle decides which corner will take on the best receiver the opposition brings out on a weekly basis. Tharpe had a solid year last year posting 32 tackles (27 assisted) while picking off six passes. Jette brings in superior speed and gets in and out of cuts better. His five interceptions and four deflections are tough to deny. With such a tight grouping of players, the pure athletic ability wins this one. Projected Winner: Randall Jette

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)
Massachusetts Minutemen 2013 Media Guide Page Four - Coaching Staff and Gilette Stadium Tyler Koch The Northern Illinois native led the Minutemen into their first ever season as a FBS member, the season was a true roller coaster ride, with the controversial starting of freshman AJ Doyle, installing his style of spread offense and ending the season on a three game winning streak would manage to lead his team to a five and seven season. Koch returns for his sophomore campaign with the school and in a contract year. Koch was selected as the fifth best coach in the Mid-American Conference following his first year. His recruiting expertise has brought in several freshman that will be taking over starting jobs in their inaugural year Offensive Coordinator: Mike Kruczek Kruczek joined Massachusetts, much like Koch, last season. His offense had it's spurts of greatness and ultimately Kruczek solidified his position with the Minutemen. Kruczek has experience coaching in the NCAA, NFL and UFL, providing him a plethora of experience with working with players, his expertise in quarterbacks showed with the growth of AJ Doyle in the early season to the end of the season. He returns for another season of Massachusetts football. Defensive Coordinator: Phil Elmassian Elmassian joins to make the trio of new coaches in Amherst. Elmassian has three decades of coaching experience, all of which was done at the collegiate level. Elmassian albeit over thirty years, has only spent a third of that as a defensive coordinator. With an expertise in linebackers, he was given a gift of a solid linebacking unit last year that terrorized the opposition and earned postseason recognition. This year he brings in three new starters, Brandt being the only senior of the group. Elmassian is gifted with a deep defensive class in the last group and should improve upon last years low numbers. Gillette Stadium Foxborough, Massachusetts Construction started in 2000 on Gilette Stadium and two years later, it would be completed. Home of the New England Patriots and the New England Revolution and now the temporary home of the Massachusetts Minutemen. The stadium has seen three AFC Championships and has become a beacon of sports entertainment in New England. The Minutemen upon deciding on the construction of McGuirk Stadium have signed an agreement to play their home games at Gillette Stadium, hoping to have similar success to the other teams that call Gillette their home. Well over an hour from campus, Gillette Stadium proves to be a home away from home, with the Minutemen only losing one game in Gillette all season last year. This year the Minutemen will look to improve their .800 percentage in one of the highest ranked stadiums in the country with six games at home, they would love to have similar success as last year in Foxborough. Gillette Stadium is the home to champions, the Minutemen hope to live up to that moniker.

Realignment 2013 [Of all the moves in 2012 that finally concluded in 2013, every conference was impacted aside from the Big Twelve which held strong at ten members following last years coup of TCU and West Virginia from the Big East, as well as the Pacific 12. The Pacific 12 had been linked to several teams on the western side of the country but they bowed out of talks this year. The Big Ten whom normally has been far removed from realignment talk had to replace the Nittany Lions in the Wake of the scandals at the school. Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)
Doyle hooks up with freshman wideout, Kearney on the games first score Massachusetts takes a tough one in San Diego (San Diego, CA) - The Minutemen and the Aztecs combined for ten turnovers, while putting up over 350 yards of offense each in an odd enough slugfest that ended in a Minutemen victory extending their win streak to four games. The Minutemen pulled this one out by holding off the Aztecs 21-20. Freshman linebacker Phillip Henderson posted an insane nineteen tackles and recorded an interception in the one point victory. "I was just feeling it out there, I got the gaps hard, they weren't ready for me I can say that..they aren't used to having to face a fast linebacker" Spoke the excited freshman to a local sports reporter. Four different Minutemen recorded interceptions, nothing spawning out of them aside from better field position. The Minutemen also added two sacks on quarterback Ryan Dingwell. Oddly enough this offensive line allowed no sacks despite their quarterback tossing five interceptions, two to both Holder and Wade, and the final to Fely late in the game on a third and long conversion attempt. AJ Doyle quickly brought back memories of last season, his 18-38 performance with 3 TD and 5 INT did little to inspire hope for the quarterback to have an entirely better season, already falling behind -2 in the TD to INT. His completion percentage was slightly below 50% but that was also inflated by three drops which would've boosted it above the 50% mark, aside from the five interceptions he had a decent game. Butler left the game early with a minor injury that coaches decided to pull the plug on the game for him, instead Stacey Bedell replaced him and put up 70 yards with a 4.3 AVG,well below Butlers 6 and Doyle's 6 (Doyle only carried the ball twice though.) All in all it was a decent showing for a rushing attack that was essentially worthless a year ago. Freshman Jeremiah Kearney led the Minutemen with five receptions for seventy yards and two touchdowns, followed closely by Marken Michel (5-65) than finally freshman TE convert, Blake Houston (4-47). Doyle is doing a better job of establishing his receivers and making reads. At the very least that is an improvement upon last season already seen. Adam Dingwell went 19-32 for 316 yards with 2 touchdowns and four interceptions. At a 59% completion rate is odd to be stuck saying this is the reason the Aztecs lost, but bad choice in passes that led to interceptions including two in the red zone are what put away the Aztecs, including the interception in the endzone with 47 seconds left in the game that put the game away for the Minutemen. Adam Muema wasn't very good on the ground, rushing for 53 yards off of 22 carries, a product of Phillip Henderson's outstanding debut in a Massachusetts jersey. Muema broke some runs including a sixteen yard one that would lead to a score, otherwise the ground game was held out of the endzone in a game where establishing the ground attack could've been vital. Escobar was the runaway performer on the receiving corp, out performing the next best three receivers in receptions and the next best four in yardage, finishing with one of only two Dingwell touchdowns solidified his status as the offensive player of the game, he made life difficult for an unusually stout Minutemen defense. The Minutemen head back home to Amherst to take on the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in the programs first ever matchup since their callup to the FBS. The Aztecs fall to 0-1, a rocky start to a promising season. Their next game comes in two weeks with their Big East Debut when they travel to Cincinnati to take on the currently undefeated Bearcats.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)
NCAA News Alabama improves to be the top team in the nation after knocking off the Hokies 35-20 to open their season Alabama will take on #7 South Carolina in a prime time matchup The Maize and Blue would like nothing more than to knock the Fighting Irish out of the Top Ten this weekend All-American half back, Spencer Ware leaves LSU's contest with a torn muscle in his shoulder and will miss at least two and a half months Texas earns their #25 spot with a 49-7 blowout over New Mexico State Early Pac 12 plays ends with Stanford dropping a blowout to Oregon Oklahoma starts out life with Landry Jones with a 31-6 victory over the Warhawks MAC News The MAC opened the 2013 season quietly with no notable upsets to be seen, the landscape is changed with Alex Carder and Zak Dysert gone, the Bobcats no longer in the conference and an ex-SEC team opens the season 0-2 in MAC play. Underachievement and mediocrity are what seems to hang on the MAC and the opening seems to follow the status quo. Massachusetts one point victory over San Diego State in a turnover riddled defensive slugfest was the closest thing to an upset but even than, San Diego State only came in ranked #67, it's hard to call it much of an upset. The Buffalo Bulls bowed out against an oddly strong Connecticut squad in a blowout victory 38-14. The Wolverines beat up on one directional Michigan school while Michigan State knocked off another. The rivals combined for 94 points compared to the 30 they allowed. The combined MAC score wouldn't be enough to win in either game, to say they won handedly would be a firm assertion. Two other matchups against BCS programs and both resulting in losses avoiding the early season turnover threat that the MAC poised a year ago, the Iowa Hawkeyes took care of business against the Northern Illinois Huskies in a 30-6 victory, while the Golden Flash gave the Tigers some fits, LSU eventually knocked them off by double digits. Tulsa entered the season unranked after losing their bowl game in a blowout, their losing streak extended to two with another blow out, losing by 21 to the Bowling Green Falcons. The Falcons put up 400 yards offensively and held Tulsa to 172 Passing yards. Miami University who underachieved a year ago are on pace for a similar disappointing season despite NFL prospect Nick Harwell returning for his senior year. They allowed the Marshall Thundering Herd to stay in this one until finally knocking them off in double OT. Toledo overachieved to blow out Kentucky in their own territory. Kentucky takes an early spot in last place in the MAC starting out 0-2 in conference play, outgained by over 200 yards, and totaling only 79 passing yards on the day. Kentucky may be outclassed in the MAC? Finally, Akron would pull off a minor upset of their own, only being ranked higher than five teams (including UTSA, Tx State and NM State) they managed to beat the average Central Florida Knights who have find ways to continually underachieve despite fairly high expectations.

Re: New Era -|Tyler Koch|- (NCAA 13)
AJ Doyle jukes past a UTSA linebacker Massachusetts flashes dominance (Amherst, MA) - Never again will everything go so right for the Minutemen in a game. Their quarterback who went thirteen straight games throwing an interception, threw none. Their injury prone running backs? Didn't miss a snap. Case of turnovers? They had no. Defenses inability to collect turnovers? They had 6. Bad defense? They held UTSA to 59 rushing yards and 154 passing yards. The only negative was the offense only managed eight first downs. When your defense is forcing six turnovers though, offense loses its need to be the overwhelming factor. Doyle completed a career high 77% of his passes while tossing three touchdowns and having almost two hundred yards on the ground. His interceptions sitting at zero is a very refreshing change of pace for a quarterback who threw five just a week ago. Expectations are rising for the Sophomore quarterback. Freshman Justin Butler led the team in rushing with his first full game of action at the collegiate level, rushing for 85 yards with a 4.2 yards per carry. His totals were nothing outstanding but were steady and consistent, a valuable asset to a streaky offense. Doyle managed 44 yards on the ground the bulk coming from his 40 yard touchdown run. Jeremiah Kearney led the Minutemen in receiving with five receptions, seventy five yards and one of three touchdown receptions from the arm of AJ Doyle. The others, FB/TE convert Blake Houston for the first score of the game and a dump off to back up half back Stacey Bedell to break the game wide open. The offensive line allowed their first sack of the year, coming in the first quarter of this one, Doyle was hurried several more times but made smart plays with the ball. On the flip side of things, Philip Henderson continues to build a name for himself, the freshman recording 9 tackles, three sacks on Soza scrambles and he would bring back an interception for a touchdown earning national player of the week honors. Sophomore corner, Jette brought in two big interceptions while freshman Nate Sampson added one more, the final interception from linebacker Tim Brandt, who would also recover a fumble and bring it back for the score, one of two defensive touchdowns on the evening. On the flip side of things, Eric Soza looked absolutely outmatched in this one. Prior to leaving in the third with injuries, albeit completing 54% of his passes, four of his in completions were intercepted and he managed less than one hundred yards on the day, Carter coming in to replace the injured Soza and managed 81 yards, 72% completion rate although tossing up an interception of his own. Eric Soza led the Road Runners in rushing while also taking the most attempts. Soza ran the ball eighteen times and several coming on designed pass plays. Soza looked uncomfortable in the pocket, was forcing throws and was constantly scrambling. Moeller was the lone bright spot of the offense with his 74 receiving yards, surpassing the total yardage that Soza threw for, while getting targeted seven times. Steven Kurfehs had a great game of his own, making sixteen tackles, two in the backfield and getting the lone sack on AJ Doyle. His contributions were ultimately in vein, but it should be known that he put up all he had in this one, it just wasn't enough to make an impact, the rest of his team bowed over.
