Take That, Randy!
Ground game leads Huskies past former coach, Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, md -- One of the more interesting storylines from the Connecticut Huskies 2012-2013 season was the return of Randy Edsall to coach against the program he groomed and ultimately led to a BCS Bowl berth. Edsall, who led the UConn program from D-2 status into Division I FBS during his tenure at Connecticut, jettisoned the program after a Fiesta Bowl loss to Oklahoma in 2011.

Well, the Huskies were enable to exact revenge over Edsall, who left the program the day after the Fiesta Bowl in 2011. The Huskies played about as complete a game as they could, leading from the outset. The offense was led once again by Lyle McCombs, who amassed his third straight 100-yard plus game.

Despite tearing an abdominal muscle in last week's game against NC St, McCombs was able to play about 60% of the snaps. Second string running back DJ Shoemate was able to fill in on the remainder of snaps, and even scored two touchdowns. His 39-yard run was an impressive combination of strength, speed, and agility, as he was able to break tackles and ankles on his way to the promised land.

The Huskies will look to continue their hot start, trying to go 4-0, next week against Western Michigan. Maryland suffered their first loss on the season, and fall to a record of 2-1.

Recruiting Roundup

Huskies Snag First Two Recruits of Class of 2013

STORRS, ct -- It has just been released to the press that Paul Pasqualoni and the UConn Huskies have signed their first two players from the Class of 2013. OLB Ben Clark (Ahoskie, NC) and DE Spencer Adams (Mount Olive, NC) both committed over the weekend. Clark and Adams, both projected as three star prospects, will look to fill the holes of a secondary loaded with departing seniors. Both should have an instant impact for the Connecticut program.

Here's a look at the list of recruits signed for the Class of 2013:

2012: Game 4

Cardiac Connecticut
Huskies nearly blow 24 point lead

KALAMAZOO, mi -- The game began about as well as it could for the side in white, the away Connecticut Huskies. The Huskies, coming into the game with a 3-0 record, took on the 1-2 Western Michigan Broncos. In the first half, the Huskies were able to snag a 17 point lead. A field goal by place kicker Chad Christen gave the Huskies and early 3 point lead. Later in the first quarter, Taylor Mack recovered a fumbled punt and took it back to the house 44 yards for a touchdown. Later in the half, Johnny McEntee hooked up with senior tight end Ryan Griffin for a 19 yard touchdown.

The Huskies took a commanding 24-0 lead just seconds into the 3rd quarter, as Mack found the end zone yet again. Mack intercepted Western Michigan quarterback Anthony Carder and took it back 48 yards for the score. It seemed like the Huskies would walk out of Michigan without a sweat.

However, Western Michigan would not go down without a fight. The Broncos were able to tack on nine points in the 3rd (TD -- failed 2pt, and a FG) to close the gap to 24-9. After a second Ryan Griffin touchdown catch gave the Huskies a 31-9 lead, the Broncos went to work. Anthony Carder caught fire, throwing a pair of touchdowns in the 4th. Twice the Broncos were able to recover onside kicks. However, it was a too little too late, as the final drive ended without a touchdown.

The Huskies, improving to 4-0 on the young season, will travel back home to Connecticut to take on the Buffalo Bulls, 2-1, next week. Western Michigan falls to 1-3 on the season.

Injury Report

Broken Ribs for WR Phillips

STORRS, ct -- We have just learned that Connecticut WR Shakim Phillips is expected to miss the next two weeks with a pair of broken ribs. The play occurred late in the 3rd quarter of the Huskies' game against Western Michigan. Phillips went up to catch a ball thrown by QB Johnny McEntee, only to get pummeled by a WMU defensive player.

Phillips states that he originally "didn't feel [the injury]", and returned to the game for the 4th quarter. Later in the game though, he did feel discomfort, and sat out the remainder of the game. Senior Michael Matson is expected to take Phillips' place as starting wide receiver, alongside WR Michael Smith.

Mack Nabs BE POTW Honors

Mack Named Big East Defensive POTW

STORRS, ct -- For the second time in just four weeks, a Connecticut Huskies player has been named the Defensive Player of the Week. After a strong Week 1 effort, Trevardo Williams received the honor. This week, it's junior cornerback Taylor Mack. Mack led the Huskies on the defensive end against Western Michigan. His play on both special teams (returned fumbled punt for TD) and defense (returned interception for TD) made Mack the unanimous choice for the award. Mack hopes that his good play, coupled with the award, will help him get some more playing time on the field. Mack currently sits fourth string of five on the depth chart. Either way, it'll be a week that Mack will never forget.
