KALAMAZOO, mi -- The game began about as well as it could for the side in white, the away Connecticut Huskies. The Huskies, coming into the game with a 3-0 record, took on the 1-2 Western Michigan Broncos. In the first half, the Huskies were able to snag a 17 point lead. A field goal by place kicker Chad Christen gave the Huskies and early 3 point lead. Later in the first quarter, Taylor Mack recovered a fumbled punt and took it back to the house 44 yards for a touchdown. Later in the half, Johnny McEntee hooked up with senior tight end Ryan Griffin for a 19 yard touchdown.
The Huskies took a commanding 24-0 lead just seconds into the 3rd quarter, as Mack found the end zone yet again. Mack intercepted Western Michigan quarterback Anthony Carder and took it back 48 yards for the score. It seemed like the Huskies would walk out of Michigan without a sweat.
However, Western Michigan would not go down without a fight. The Broncos were able to tack on nine points in the 3rd (TD -- failed 2pt, and a FG) to close the gap to 24-9. After a second Ryan Griffin touchdown catch gave the Huskies a 31-9 lead, the Broncos went to work. Anthony Carder caught fire, throwing a pair of touchdowns in the 4th. Twice the Broncos were able to recover onside kicks. However, it was a too little too late, as the final drive ended without a touchdown.
The Huskies, improving to 4-0 on the young season, will travel back home to Connecticut to take on the Buffalo Bulls, 2-1, next week. Western Michigan falls to 1-3 on the season.
