Re: Coach Wile: A Football Life II (NCAA 06 - PS2)
Yeah, I was pretty surprised. Ohio State's linemen on both sides of the ball made mine look like peewee football players. But Tanner really got it done when he wasn't being chased out of the pocket
The Miami RedHawks open MAC conference play at home against the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Chips are coming off a solid 42-23 win versus Indiana. Fifth year senior QB Justin Davis recorded a QB Rating of 222.0 thanks to four touchdown passes and over 300 yards. Davis leads a high-powered offense into Oxford including MAC-2nd team HB Andrew Townsend and star receiver Cameron Palmer. The RedHawks will have to exploit a questionable defensive unit, specifically in the linebacker department, where Central Michigan has very limited talent. Leo Cleveland will see his first start for the RedHawks due to Allen Rouse's injury despite a poor outing at Ohio State. Miami is slightly favored in this conference opener, but it should still prove to be a very competetive game.
The RedHawks win the toss but defer to Central Michigan. Things started out looking pretty grim for Miami early. Justin Davis connected on a 64-yard bomb to TE Taylor Crosby to give the Chippewas 1st and goal from the 2-yard line. After a Townsend run that goes nowhere, the RedHawks' fortunes seemed to have reversed. Sophomore starting RE Darrell Cook blasts through the line and delivers a solid hit on Justin Davis, who fumbles the ball right into the hands of star linebacker Kelvin Holt. Thanks to some bad passing, bad blocking and arguably bad play-calling, the RedHawks end up punting the ball right back to Central Michigan.
Chip QB Justin Davis looks very good when he's not turning the ball over. Unfortunately for him, he would cough up the ball again in short order, tossing a lazy pass into the flat picked off by junior CB Charlie Crumpler. The same could be said about HB Leo Cleveland. He looks very good picking up first downs two plays in a row, but all is forgotten when he fumbles the ball on the third play. The fumble would be picked up and returned to the house by senior LB Chris Clancy to go up 7-0. The RedHawks would waste no time in getting the score square once again. Tanner Everson consecutively completes passes of 11, 40, 17 and finally a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tyrell Cobbs.
Another two scoring drives for the Chippewas and it's 17-7. A 58-yard prayer was answered to give Central Michigan the 10-point edge. But once again, Miami would respond on their next drive. The ice was in Everson's veins as he again consecutively completed passes of 17, 36, 11 and then capped it off with a 15-yard pass to Stephen Roberts. The RedHawks were still down by three points, but at least another golden drive gave their fans something to cheer about. They were still cheering as the home team forced the Chippewas three-and-out on their next drive. Another Leo Cleveland fumble in field goal territory would put them back in their seats. The first half would end in Central Michigan's favor, 17-14.
Miami would take the ball and promptly give it away. Tanner Everson was looking good with zero through the first half, but then his INT mark on the season increased to eight. Justin Davis would also quickly throw the ball away. To his dismay it would go back 83-yards in the opposite direction for a RedHawk touchdown, courtesy of captain CB Harry Clark. The interception bug would continue to bite in this game, as just when Tanner Everson was looking for his third touchdown pass of the game, it is tipped up in the air and into the hands of a defender. This would work out for the RedHawks in the end. Kelvin Holt would storm into his own endzone to record the safety for his team.
This would finally give Miami the momentum it depserately needed. At the beginning of the fourth, the RedHawks were up by twenty points at 37-17. Though the first play of the quarter was a huge 79-yard pass for a Chippewa touchdown, Miami felt comfortably in the lead. Leo Cleveland and Tanner Everson would have to stop giving up the ball if their team had hopes to hold on to the victory. Tanner Everson would effectively end the game with his fifth touchdown pass, a 17-yard strike through the arms of several defenders direct to Tyrell Cobbs. Despite a courageous come-back effort by Central Michigan, the game would end with Tanner taking a knee, the score 47-37.

Coach's Comments
"I'm very pleased with the team's performance today. I believe this was our best outing of the year so far, and I believe we can continue to play at this level. Tanner threw a good game with over 60% completion for the first time all season. That's something I hope he can continue to do for the remainder. Can't say enough about the defense today, the whole squad gets the game ball. Shout out to one of the big guys, LT Lamar Bush, for picking up his 60th pancake of the season so far. Truly setting a great example for the rest of the kids on that o-line. Bring on the Bearcats!"

Coach's Comments
"First off I want to say how proud I am to be bringing Miami University the 2005 Victory Bell. We were the better team, and hopefully that remains true for years to come. I promise you, there will be lots more of these! Hats off to the defense once again putting on a dominant showing. Negative rushing yards in that column should make a statement. That's what happens when you also get twelve sacks in a game. Tanner didn't have his best game, but it definitely wasn't his worst of the season either. Just caught a few unlucky tips is all. Rouse looked good coming off his injury. There's definitely a rivalry between him and Leo, two redshirted sophomores. I'm very satisfied with a 4-1 record through 6 weeks, and I think the guys have started to get on a roll. I really can't identify a true threat at this point for the MAC title."

"Boy we are lucky to be leaving Illinois with a victory. Michael Fields ran all over us today. Run defense will definitely be the focus in practice this week. We fell behind 21-3 early, but the team responded well in the second half. The guys never gave up. Though I'm not happy with their performance against Fields, I'm glad the defense managed to shut-out the Huskies in the second half. That's thanks in part to two clutch interceptions by my man Guy Hill. The offensive line put on a mediocre performance today, let's face it. Tanner still managed to throw a great game, but I'd like him getting sacked five times less in his next. We're still undefeated in conference play thus far, but we'll have to step it up against the run playing Akron next week."
