In the Montana Mountains

Montana backed up against the goal line late in the game
Michigan Protects It's Big House
Ann Harbor, MI

All seemed to be going well for Montana early on in the game. An unfortunate injury to Michigan RB Ftizgerald Toussaint of a mild concussion knocked him out of the game. But backup RB Vincent Smith played well in his absence. The story was all about QB Denard Robinson. Early on he didn't look to rush the ball much, throwing the ball a lot Michigan only held a 10-0 lead seconds before half. Benson dialed up the air assault again. The same play they ended the half with last week, they ended with this week. WR Sean Haynes was there for the reception and finished off the 79 yard score. The Wolverines played a soft zone and bit on WR Sam Gratton's break. As Gratton started across the field Haynes kept on his fly route and ended up wide open. QB Jordan Johnson hit Haynes in stride as he was getting hit himself. It was the lone bright spot for an offense that struggled, 10-7 at half.

And that's where the happy story ends. The sleeping giant awoke after halftime. Denard Robinson started rushing the ball, then he would make an excellent pass. Montana's defense had no efficient way of handling Robinson.
"We would blitz, he'd (Robinson) would hit the open receiver. We'd drop back in zone, he'd have enough time to find the hole and make the pass. We ran man, he'd wait and take off for 10-15 yards. The kid can play. We tried everything. He beat us. There isn't a better college football player than Denard Robinson" Coach Benson said.
Having to try and stop Robinson the running back Smith would score three touchdowns of his own and rushed for 105 yards. Robinson threw for two touchdowns and ran for one. He netted over 300 yards of offense himself. Michigan was up late 38-10 and scored another touchdown. They made a pass on a 3 and 9. It set up a first and goal with less than a minute left in the game. RB Vincent Smith would score. 45-10 was the final.

"I felt it was a little bush league by Coach Hoke. You have the game won, run the ball and kick the field goal. The touchdown was unnecessary." Coach Benson added.
We later found out QB Denard Robinson injured himself on the pass play, and is out 2 weeks. Coach Benson said he was sorry to hear Michigan's coach injured the best college football player. That didn't go over well with UCONN coach Paul Pasqualoni.
"Tell Benson that this is the big time, Stop him if you don't want to see him score. And Hoke didn't injure his player, it was a fluke injury" Pasqualoni said

"Why would UCONN even care about our game? Don't they have a basketball scandal to cover up? Does he make his players go to class or are they in same boat as the basketball team? I'll tell you what, We'll handle this on the field. I want UCONN next year." Benson replied.

It's not known why Pasqualoni would comment on the situation but both schools have agreed to play an annual meeting with each other in football starting next year at UCONN.

The WAC had no upsets this week as Montana got blitzed by Michigan. Buffalo made a good showing beating Kent State handily. Northern Illinois continued their winning ways by getting their first conference win over Navy this week. San Jose St lost their rivalry game with San Diego St by a touchdown. A couple of big games for the WAC next week. Northern Illinois hosts Kansas and Montana hosts Iowa State. Both teams have a chance to beat the Tier 1 schools.

Game Notes
Iowa State is led by their star running back James White They also have a good passing attack led by QB Steele Jantz. Jantz does make mistakes though. He has already thrown 7 INTs this year. Look for Iowa St to run a spread offense. That plays well into Montana's hands playing a 4-2-5 defense

On defense the Cyclones are led by OLB Jake Knott who already has 4.0 sacks in this young year. CB Jeremy Reeves has 3 INT. The Grizzlies rush offense is second to last in the NCAA (121). ISU is 24th in the nation in stopping the run. Montana needs to try and get the run going early, so it opens up the passing game.

The game starts at 1 PM local time, it will be broadcast on ROOT Sports Montana and the radio broadcast is on MontanaGrizzlies.com

In the Montana Mountains

Grizzles Dominate Cyclones
Missoula, MT

Well Montana's confidence wasn't lacking any against Iowa State. They looked like they knew they should win today. The defense got after it early. On the third play of the game DE Zack Wagenmann sacked QB Jantz forcing a fumble, then recovering it and scoring a touchdown. The stadium went bonkers. It set a great tone for the a game where the Griz played near perfect football. QB Jordan Johnson looked masterful out there. Other than a red zone interception in the second quarter he didn't miss a throw. He went 20 of 25. One casualty of the win was the injury of SR WR Sam Gratton who broke his hand. He is out for at least 5 weeks. But sophomore WR Sean Haynes stepped up catching 7 passes for 86 yards and a score. RB Peter Nguyen broke 100 yards for the second time this year.

"The offense didn't start out slow this week. The defense helped that big time. After the first touchdown our offensive guys said 'we got this, we can't let the d down'. I was proud how we played today." Coach Benson recanted.

Bo Tulley added another interception on the year in the first half and in the second half he broke up a few more key passes on third down. The Cyclones only managed to convert one third down all game. That's how dominate the defense was. In the fourth quarter Iowa State did manage a couple of scores, but it was nothing to worry about. You could see the defense just wanted off the field at times. The offense didn't like them out there either. Montana had over 20 minutes of possession time to Iowa State's eight. Ball control was the key to the game and score touchdowns at the end of those long drives.

This season there have been many upsets so far. One of the biggest was this weekend when Kentucky beat South Carolina. Also Tennessee beat Georgia. I don't think ranked teams beating each other is much of an upset but some may consider that it, for those upsets we had Michigan State beating Ohio State, Wisconsin beating West Virginia, Kansas State falling to Texas and Stanford beat Washington.

North Texas enters the with two conference games under their belt (1-1). This will be Montana's first conference clash. The Montana defense should be able to hold down the North Texas offense, which is only scoring 19.0 points per game which is 113th in the nation, while Montana gives up 31.2 their schedule has been a lot tougher.

The Offense should be able to move the ball. North Texas is ranked 82nd in the country in total defense. Saturday looks like a good opportunity to get the first win in conference play for the Grizzlies.

The game will be broadcast on ROOT Sports Montana and the radio broadcast will be available on MontanaGrizzlies.com

Recruit Breakdowns

(All Breakdowns are courtesy of ESPN Recruiting West Blogger Mason Kelley)

FS- Jeremy Nichols- 6-0 177 lbs, Arcadia, CA, 3 Star - Chose Montana over Washington, Stanford and Utah

Nichols was the 34th best FS in his class. While he doesn't have a ton of size he makes up for it in his sure tackling and hard hitting abilities. Nichols has decent speed and accelerates very well. He is an instinctive player. He doesn't play man or zone very well but he is good at pressing the line and either blitzing or falling back into coverage. He will compete for a starting job in the Grizzlies defensive backfield next fall.

SS- Jeff Gould- 6-0 191 lbs, West University, TX, 3 Star- Chose Montana over Baylor, Arkansas, Nebraska, TCU, Texas Tech and BYU

The 32nd ranked SS Jeff Gould is a sure tackler who is good in zone and press coverage. He only has average speed for the college level. What helps Gould is his athletic ability, he is an excellent jumper and makes good plays on the ball. He won't devastated people when he hits them like fellow Montana commit Jeremy Nichols but an opposing player won't break one of his tackles. Gould figures to be a backup his freshman year.

ATH- Robert Lewis- 6-2 232 lbs, Novato, CA, 3 Star- Chose Montana over Notre Dame, UCLA, Fresno St, Air Force and Nevada

Robert Lewis is the 71st athlete in the nation but he may have some of the biggest upside of anyone in the nation. His junior year he play WR/CB in HS. This year his coach put him at QB and Safety. As a QB Lewis is raw but he has a decent arm that is deadly accurate. Not to mention he is a threat to run at any time. Lewis ran a 4.48 40 in summer camps. As a WR Lewis has good size, runs routes well and gets a good release off the line, the bad thing is his hands aren't the best. Pending on how Montana's coach Benson sees Robert as a QB will be interesting. With little time at the position he shows great promise and maybe a future start for Montana

QB Omarr Oliver- 6-5 216 lbs, JUCO So. Rapid City SD- Chose Montana over Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa St and Wyoming

Oliver is a low level JUCO recruit because of an injury last year, he also has academic issues. With QB Jordan Johnson most likely returning next year, Oliver figures to be the immediate backup if he is eligible for school. Having 3 years to play two Oliver would benefit from a year on the bench. He is a duel threat QB with decent speed. He's got a good arm but his accuracy isn't always the best. Oliver is a project at best. He may never see the field at Montana.

Montana got off to one of their usual slow starts. The offense turned over the ball quite a few times early on. North Texas took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter. That's where the Grizzlies woke up and started pounding the ball down their throat. RB Peter Nguyen had 16 carries for 99 yards and two touchdowns in the first half when he left the game with a deep knee bruise. RB Jordan Canada would do an ample job filling in, on 18 carries for 78 yards and 2 touchdowns himself. Jordan Johnson was not as accurate as he was versus Iowa State. He made some bad throws but he also made some great ones. In WR Sam Gratton's absence WR Bryce Carver picked up the slack with 6 catches for 128 yards and a touchdown.

But the story was the defense. Other than the early score they were relentless. The Mean Green were unable to move the ball. LB Jordan Tripp recorded eight total tackles. CB Marlon Miles got his second interception of the year and returned it for the score. After the interception for touchdown, the Mean Green had a 97 yard touchdown return on the kickoff. The special teams coverage has struggled this year. So the defense only gave up 14 points. Montana looks like they are starting to click. The running game looked like it will be more effective. The line has started to block better on the run. They need to carry this over into next week when they have another test. They travel to Annapolis to face Navy.

Game Notes
Navy runs a triple option attack. They won't throw much. RB Gee Gee Greene leads the nation in rushing. In 6 games this year he has over 1,000 yards already and 12 touchdowns. Montana will need to stack the box and contain the run. They need to force third and long situations.

On Defense Navy is on of the pass defense teams in the nation coming into the game (#25). Jordan Johnson will need to be accurate like he was in the Iowa State game and late in the game against North Texas.

Commit Breakdown
(All breakdowns are provided by ESPN Recruiting West Blogger Mason Kelley)

OLB- Jesse Benson- 6-5 231 lbs, Kerrville, TX, 3 Star - Chose Montana over TCU, Wisconsin, Utah and Wyoming

Benson is a big fast tackling machine. At 6-5 231 pounds Benson is a man child on the field. He clocked a 4.42 40 and he lives up to it. He recognizes plays well but takes bad angles. With his speed he is able to cover in man very well. His press and zone coverage skills need some work. He is the 48th OLB in this class but he has the potential to be one of the best. As a freshman Benson should see time on the field. His speed a lone will get him in the rotation at LB for the Grizzlies.

CB- Aaron Monroe- 6-0 190 lbs, Belgrade, MT, 3 Star - Chose Montana over Stanford, Iowa, Boise St and Nevada

Monroe is an in-state product who loves where he is from. There was little doubt that he wouldn't sign with Montana. He's got very good coverage skills in man, zone and decent in press coverage. He's not a sure tackler. In Coach Benson's 4-2-5 it's vital CB's tackle. Monroe also doesn't have good top end speed, but his acceleration allows him to close gaps quickly. He is a very good athlete as well. At 6' tall and a 38" vertical Monroe swats a lot of balls down. With Monroe's good skills he may be able to crack the depth chart as a freshman.

HB- Antwuan Dunlap- 5-8 190 lbs, Houston, TX, 3 Star - Chose Montana over Kansas, Tulsa, Rice and UTEP

Dunlap wasn't recruited by a ton of big schools. He has a fumbling problem and is not a fast back. But when he holds on to the ball he has good vision and he is a shifty back. He has the ability to make defenders miss. He also will run through them. He does have potential. With RB Patrick Nguyen and RB Caleb Walden graduating Dunlap maybe able to fight his way into the RB rotation.

FS- Donnie Stephens- 6-2 190 lbs, Cloverleaf, TX, 3 Star - Chose Montana over Cal, Arizona St and Baylor

Stephens is the prototypical size for a safety. He also plays like one. He can deliver a knock out hit. He is strong for his position as well. He is very poor in recognizing plays and needs to work in all of his coverage skills. But in pursuit he takes great angles and forces fumbles with his hit power. He isn't a great tackler, he could use work on his technique. Half of the time he tries to just lay the ball carrier out. Stephens should redshirt as a true freshman and then have the ability to start in his second year.

FB- Randall Avery- 6-1 235 lbs, San Benito, TX, 1 Star - Chose Montana over Texas Tech, Rice and UTSA

Avery is the balanced kind of FB that Benson's offense requires. His FB's need to block and catch. That's why a lot of the time you see a TE in the position like an H-Back. Well Avery is a decent blocker and has ok hands. He is fast for a FB. With no FB on the roster Avery should see some playing time.

Re: In The Montana Mountains | A NCAA 13 Relegation Dynasty

Hey, this is totally off topic, but I love your recruiting guide. I am playing a dynasty as Louisiana Lafayette, and I do basically what you said. As a 1 star team, you have to focus and the players that are somewhat interested in you. I am going to have maybe 15 recruits, 1-3 stars. I even got some gems.

Is that including the off season? cause once you get you're original 8-10 guys keep adding guys to the board and give them an hour every week, use some promises and offer the scholly first call. In the off season do the same maybe two promises. you should end up around 20-23 guys a year. Plus there will always be guys committing that you dont recruit. I actually had a couple i kept in my SJSU dynasty.
