Re: An Uphill Battle: A Western Colorado University Dynasty
2012 Season Preview: The Western Colorado University Mountaineers enter the 2012 season in what is a completely new feel for them when it comes to college football. A small school located in the Southwest Mountains of Colorado will now begin its journey as a new D1 Football school. With all the movement and conference realignments, the door was left wide open for Western Colorado to jump into the Mountain West Conference. A Team that has struggled for years at the D2 Level is now going to have to grow up fast or it could be a very long season on both sides of the ball. As everyteam in college football, the quarterback play will be the determining factor for the Mountaineers this season on offense. Leading the charge will be Junior Pete Cantrell (6'1" 209). The ability to make plays with his feet allows him to buy time and find open targets down the field, and he has 2 very good ones in that of Junior, Tra Barbour (6'1" 185 lbs.) and Freshman, Shaun Suttorp (6'0" 180 lbs.). Suttorp is a highly thought of prospect coming out of Gateway High School in Aurora Colorado. Due to a knee injury in the 2nd game of his senior season in High School many of the bigger schools decided to pass on him. Suttorp was rated the #7 WR in the state of Colorado before the knee injury and had interest from many of the schools around the area, including conference opponents, CSU, New Mexico and Utah State. "I'm just glad to have a chance to play college football" said Suttorp, "Everything happens for a reason and for that i am going to take this opportunity and run with it". The ground attack will be lead mostly by Sophomore Donny Nelson (6'0" 215 lbs), who possess good speed and great size for the RB position. Nelson will be a key part of the Western offense to help take some pressure off of Cantrell. "Its always nice knowing that when i am struggling i can hand the ball off to (Donny) Nelson", said Cantrell. "He is a beast and we expect huge numbers from him for many years to come". On the defensive side of the ball, the strength will be in the secondary for the Mountaineers, however youth could play a major factor in how successful the unit is as a whole. Two Freshman Andrew Bosley (5'9" 170 lbs) and Kyle Schwerin (5'9" 215 lbs) will be counted on to make plays all season for the Mountaineer defense. Bosley ironically enough was a teammate of Suttorp's at Gateway High School in Aurora. He helped lead a defense that qualified for the 5A State quarterfinals. Bosley was a big time playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for the Olympians of Gateway, leading the team with 6 INT's his senior season. However due to his lack of size being only 5'9" many of the bigger schools over looked him during the recruiting process. "Andrew (Bosley) is very quick " said Suttorp of his former high school teammate. "Many people in high school would look at him and think that they had an easy match up, and well many times he proved them wrong. Makes you wonder what could of happened if he was 2 inches taller." The other before mentioned DB Kyle Schwerin from Bay City, Michigan joins the Mountaineer program as a feared hitter in his high school area. "I wasnt recruited much out of high school" said Schwerin "obviously only being 5'9" hurt me in the eyes of the bigger schools, but im not worried about that, I just want to play football and start showing what i know i am capiable of". With the amount of youth in the Secondary, the question becomes of where the experience will come from. The answer is the LB core, but the overall skill level for the group is down compared to other teams in the Mountain West Conference. Senior captain and OLB Dion Gallagher (6'1" 223) is a bit under sized for the LB position especially at the D1 level, but his motor and will to make plays has made him a solid player throughout the years. Overall not much can be expected from the newcomers to the D1 level and ESPN Magazine predicts a 2-10 season for the Mountaineers in 2012. Last edited by WesternStateWR; 08-03-2012 at 03:19 AM. |

Re: An Uphill Battle: A Western Colorado University Dynasty
Being a westcoast guy, I always enjoy reading dynasties about teams playing in the MWC, WAC, Pac-12, ect.. Would be interested to see how you the rest of your conferences look with what looks like a interesting mix of teams in your MWC, especially the WAC and did you put BSU in the Big East?

Re: An Uphill Battle: A Western Colorado University Dynasty
0-0 (0-0) @ 0-0 (0-0) First Ever Meeting Between Schools *****Tuning to 91.1 KWSB****** Welcome Folks to another season of Mountaineer Football here on 91.1 KWSB Radio, Gunnison Colorado's home of All Mountaineer Athletics. I am Jim Austin, and along side me as always is former Western star athlete and former NFL WR Tyrone Johnson. Tyrone i have to admit, its great to be back for yet another season of Mountaineer football. That it is Jim, i cant remember the last time i was this excited about the upcoming football season for the Mountaineers. With all the changes that took place in the offseason i am sure we will have something to talk about all year. Everything from a school name change, to changing the level of competition. Its unbelieveable to think about so much happening in so little time. Isnt that the truth... For those of you that might of been sleeping under a rock, and havent heard, Western State College is no more, it is now Western Colorado University. Also gone are the days of playing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers decided it was time to step up and finally make the move to the D1 level. So Tyrone let me ask you, what are you first impressions of the move? Well obviously its going to be good for the school in the long term, this is going to take time however and the Mountaineers are going to take their lumps early and often during this transition, but with a solid backing from the school and community i can see this being a very successful move in the near future not just for football, but for all the other athletic programs on campus. I agree Ty, there is a new found buzz within the community that we have not seen since, well lets be honest back in the day when you were playing and winning RMAC Championships. However with only 30 minutes until kick-off lets talk about the match up today as the Mountaineers get ready to play their first ever D1 Football game against the Northwestern Wildcats. What can we expect to see today Tyrone? Well for starters its all going to begin with the starting QB of the Mountaineers, and that of course is Pete Cantrell the JuCO transfer from Mesa Community College in Arizona. I believe that not just today but all year he will have to be the leader on offense and help all the young players around him stay calm. I believe that with this being the first game of the year obviously you are going to expect mistakes, and so clearly in my mind whoever makes the fewest mistakes will take this football game. I agree Pete Cantrell is going to have to be a solid player game in and game out for the Mountaineers if they plan to have any success this season. Speaking of QB's lets shift our focus to a kid that many people in Colorado already know, and that is Kain Colter from Northwestern. Exactly Jim, Colter as many people already know is a graduate of Cherry Creek High School which is located right in the heart of Colorado. There he had a great career, and so far he has gotten off to a solid start in College. This kid can do it all, and when i say that, i mean it... Last year he lead the Wildcats in Rushing Yards, also was just short of 500 yards receiving, oh and not to mention threw for nearly 1000 yards as well being the Wildcats back up QB behind Persa last year. He is a great athlete for sure, and i bet many people are excited to finally see this kid get the starting job that he has worked so hard for here at Northwestern. But folks that will do it for the Western Colorado University pre-game show. It is officially time to kick off the 2012 season here on 91.1 KWSB after these messages. ****1st Quarter Action****** ....... And that will bring up a 2nd and goal for the Mountaineers at the Wildcat 5 yard line with 3:55 left and counting... Cantrell takes the snap, the give to Nelson once again and he drives a defender into the endzone for a MOUNTAINEER TOUCHDOWN!!! Wow Tyrone they sure made that one look easy Yes sir they did! going 76 Yards on 9 plays and Donny Nelson being the work horse on that drive for sure, and it always good to see the first drive of the season go for a TD, Welcome to D1 Football everyone! ...... After the Colter incomplete pass it will bring up 2nd and 10 at their own 33 yard line.. Colter under center with Treyvon Green as the lone back.. heres the snap the give to Green left side.. breaks a tackle.. makes another miss and this is going to be a foot race.. and a foot race that Green is going to win.. 15..10..5... Touchdown Wildcats..67 yard score for Treyvon Green. Just sloppy tackling there Jim... Early in the season it is expected that you will see this, but 2 missed tackles and poor angles from the back side pursuit and just like that this game is tied, just 39 seconds after the Mountaineers had taken the lead. 7-7 End of the 1st *****2nd Quarter Action ****** ........ 3rd and goal from the Mountaineer 1 yard line, the Wildcats looking for a score to take the lead, all the big boys in the for this one, and heres the snap, the give and Green is in yet again.. his 2nd TD of the game and the Wildcats now lead 14-7 Just a very good drive there for the Wildcats, and you can see the lack of size on the Western defensive side is really starting to show as the Wildcats offensive line is starting to control this game, and Treyvon Green is benefiting for it for sure with his 2nd TD of the game. ..... Clock running instead of 40 seconds, the Mountaineers putting together a solid answering drive so far after Northwestern has taken the lead, with the ball on the Wildcats 37 yard line.. Cantrell in the shotgun, takes the snap looking to his left and HES GOT A MAN!! ITS Hiram Elbert and no one is around him and he will walk into the end zone, and just like that the Mountaineers answer back with a TD of their own and this game is tied with :25 seconds left in the half. Its was just a simple seam route from the slot by Elbert and clearly some miscommunication between the Northwestern defenders as Elbert was open by 10 yards, leading to a one of the easiest TD's Elbert will score his entire career. Great job by Cantrell there looking the safety off and making a great throw to a wide opener receiver. 14-14 End of 2nd. ****** 3rd Quarter Action ******* ...... The Western Defense once again having trouble with Colters' athletic ability and after a first down run, the Wildcats are in great position sitting at 1st and goal from the 8. Heres the snap.. Colter with the pass and its going to be caught for a TD.. Evan Watkins from 8 yards out and once again the Wildcats take the lead. Just a great opening drive for the Wildcats, you can tell the coaches went in and saw what the Mountaineers were doing on the defense and they just picked them apart all the way down the field. It will be interesting to see how the Mountaineers adjust after seeing that last drive. ..... Just seems like the Mountaineers defense is starting to get tired out there as the O-Line for the Wildcats are getting great push in the run game.. heres the give and its Green again and yet again another TD for Treyvon Green, his 3rd of the day and the Wildcats now lead 27-14 late in the 3rd. Like you said, the smaller Western defense is be manhandled up front and this is something that we kind of expected to see not just today but all year. The Mountaineers are not out of this game though. They just need to answer back with a long drive on offense and let this defense rest, as they have been on the field almost all the 3rd quarter. End 3rd 28-14 Wildcats ***** 4th Quarter Action ***** ..... Well after the last possession where Cantrell threw his 2nd INT of the game leading to Greens 3rd TD run, he has really settled back down on this drive, and this is exactly what you said the Mountaineers needed to do Ty. Its now 2nd and 8 from the Wildcats own 27 yardline, hes the snap Cantrell looking right and its... picked again! this time is CJ Bryant and there is no one in front of him and well folks hes going to be running for a while... 40..30..20..15..10..5.. Touchdown Northwestern... and what was a very competitive 1st half is now starting to turn into a laugher with Cantrells 3rd INT of the game. It was a great play call on offense, just a bad pass. Simple as that, he had Shaun Suttorp open on the right side and he just didnt put enough air under the ball and CJ Bryant just leaped and took the ball.. 80 yards the other way, and like you said Jim, this game is starting to get out of hand with the score now 34-14 with 6:59 remaining. ..... Well the news on Cantrell is that he will be out rest of the game, as he received a mild concussion after making a tackle on his 4th INT of the game.. We were wondering when we saw Early Capps come into the game, but it appears it is injuried based and not solely performance based for Cantrells' benching here late in the 4th.... Capps takes the snap from the Wildcats 23 yard line up just under a minute to play, the throw going to Suttorp and its caught... up past the 15 and hes going to score... TOUCHDOWN MOUNTAINEERS!! It was just a simple slant and Capps hit Suttorp perfectly in stride and he just out ran the trailing defender for the 23 yard score. Its not the outcome the Mountaineers wanted to see in this game, but it has to feel good to finally get back on the scoreboard even with just :49 seconds remaining. 38-22 FINAL SCORE Last edited by WesternStateWR; 08-03-2012 at 11:00 AM. |

Re: An Uphill Battle: A Western Colorado University Dynasty
1-0 (0-0) VS. 0-1 (0-0) First Ever Meeting Between Schools *****Tuning To 91.1 KWSB****** Welcome back Folks to Western Colorado University football here on 91.1 KWSB Radio, Gunnison Colorado. I am your host Jim Austin and as always next to me, one of the greatest athletes to ever play at Western, Tyrone Johnson. Ty, so its the Mountaineers home season opener and i am sure they are excited about that after the beating they took last week by the Northwestern Wildcats. Yes they are excited to be home. Lets be honest though Jim the Mountaineers played the Wildcats very tough for the 1st half of that football game. The end result was not what they wanted but i am sure with an extra week of film study coming off a bye, the mistakes the Mountaineers made against Northwestern will be cleaned up. No doubt the mistakes cost the Mountaineers the ball game two weeks ago, but lets shift our focus to todays opponent in that of the Texas State Bobcats. This is an interesting match up on paper as Texas State is yet another of those teams playing it fist season in D1, and clearly they were not phased defeating the Lobos of New Mexico in their first game pretty easily 41-21. The Bobcats of Texas State are a very talented team, and they too are wanting to prove just like the Mountaineers are trying to prove that they belong at the D1 level. Now understand that New Mexico has had its struggles the past few seasons but a 41-21 road victory is a very impressive win no matter what level you are playing. What are the keys to todays game tyrone? Well its quite simple honestly... dont turn the football over... 4 INT's by Pete Cantrell last game deflated the team as a whole and really put the offense and defense in tough positions all day. The Mountaineers are going to have to protect the ball as well as try and slow down a very talented QB from Texas State in that of Shaun Rutherford. Now even Rutherford struggled against New Mexico throwing 3 INT's of his own, but he also answered back completing over 50% of his passes for 208 yards and 3 TD's as well with all going to different WR's. Texas State is going to spread the ball around and look to run when they can. If the Mountaineers can take care of the ball and limit the passing game of the Bobcats i honestly do like their chances to win. Well the Captains are now leaving the field and it appears that the Mountaineers will receive the ball to start this game. We will be right back on the Mountaineer Radio Network after these messages. *****1st Quarter Action**** 0-0 End 1st *****2nd Quarter Action**** ..... And Nelson will be stopped just short of the first down marker, making it 4th and 1 from the Bobcats 23 yardline. What do you do here Tyrone? Well if i am coaching i let Roach come onto the field and attempt this FG.. Its only a 40 yard attempt and with just :13 seconds remaining in this scoreless 1st half you have to try and get the momentum in your favor going into the locker... Neither team has really threatened all day and the way its looking points will be at a premium.. Well it looks like your right on the call as Roach is lining up for a 40 yard attempt right before the half... heres the snap, the hold is good and the kick is up, a low line drive but he NAILED It! a big time kick and that finally breaks this scorless tie right before the half. Mountaineers lead 3-0. End 2nd 3-0 WCU ******3rd Quarter Action***** None End 3rd 3-0 WCU *****4th Quarter Action****** ..... WOW What a run by Donny Nelson, an gain of 54 yards to set up the Mountaineers at the 10 yardline to begin the 4th quarter.. It was a great run by Nelson as he really used his blockers well and like you said its now 1st and goal at the 10 of the Bobcats and this is going to be a huge series of downs that could determine the outcome of this game. Cantrell takes the snap, waste no time fires its left side hes got Shaun Suttorp and hes got a WESTERN TOUCHDOWN!!!! and Finally our first TD of this game and could not of come at a bigger time with only 7:54 remaining. Just last like week..or two weeks ago i should say, it was a quick slant and Suttorp was able to get inside of his defender and reach the ball over the goal line as he was being dragged down. ...... Nelson a gain of 2 yards after the short punt by the Bobcats, and that will bring up and a 2nd and 8 from the 38 yard line of Texas State, Cantrell lines up in the gun, heres the snap.. drops back fires it to the middle of the field and GUESS WHO??? ITS SUTTORP AGAIN AND HES GOING TO GO!!! TOUCHDOWN WESTERN!!!!! Yes sir!!! What a pass by Cantrell as he found Shaun Suttorp wide open in the middle of the field on what looked to be a post route out of the slot. It was man coverage and he just beat the Outside Line backer and finally with 5:02 left in the 4th the Mountaineers take a commanding 17-0 lead. End 4th.. 20-0 Western Wins! Recruiting Report
Gunnison, CO - Coach Jas Bains has just released information of two high school seniors that have signed their National Letters of Intent this past weekend. The two players are Kevin Alexander, and William Johnson. Both players are expect to join the team for fall practices next season, and both are considered to be contributors right away in 2013. Kevin Alexander is a 6'3" 247 pound DE from Moscow, Idaho, where he plays his prep ball at Moscow East High School. Alexander is currently second on his team in sacked with 4.5 in just 3 games for the Knights of Moscow East. Rivals.com has Alexander listed as the 11th best prospect in the state of Idaho and also ranks him as the 151st best DE in the nation. "Kevin has great size, and really good speed for his size", said coach Bains early today "We really think that he can come in right away and compete for a starting job this fall". The other signee is William Johnson of Coweta, Oklahoma, where he plays at Coweta High School. At 6'5" and 222 pounds it is unknown if Johnson will line up as a WR or TE by the time he touches the field for the Mountaineers. However, whereever he lines up he will be a threat for sure as he has led the Dusters of Coweta High in receptions and yards since his Sophomore season. Johnson currently has 22 Catches for 458 Yards and 4 TD's this year. "Johnson is a great athlete and really has that size that we look for in our outside WR's" said Coach Bains, "The other nice thing about William (Johnson) is that with his frame we can easily put 15-20 pounds on him and move him to TE if we believe he will help us more there".
In further recruiting news, Coach Jas Bains also listed two other Prep Stars that were on campus for their official visit during the Texas State game. Daniel O'Donnell a 6'5" 252 pound DE from San Manuel, Arizona and San Manuel Central High School was one of the possible signees that was on campus for the Texas State game this past weekend. O'Donnell is listed as a 3-Star recruit by Rivals.com and the #35 DE overall in the nation. The other possible signee was MLB Aaron Grant from Brighton Colorado by way of Brighton High School. Colorado Preps list Grant as the #8 recruit in the entire state of Colorado and Rivals.com list him as a 3-Star recruit and the #13 overall MLB prospect.
