Re: Resurrection in the Valley of the Sun - an Arizona State Story

Hey guys, I know the posting frequency has slowed down a bit the past couple days. I just started a new job and haven't finished out my two weeks at my old job so they overlap right now. Tomorrow is my day off from both so I should be getting in several updates.

Stay tuned...

FOURTH QUARTER SCORINGASUCAL
1:00(CAL) TD - Cal K. Allen 10 yd pass from Z. Maynard (w/ 2-pt conversion)1834

WR Kevin Ozier (82) strikes a pose after scoring on a bomb from QB Mike Bercovici.

Berkeley, CA -The first quarter would consist of a 52 yd TD pass from Mike Bercovici to Kevin Ozier, ASU up early 7-0. Cal would kick a yd FG putting points on the board, 7-3. ASU RB Kyle Middlebrooks would make it 14-3 and that would be the score after the end of the 1st.

RB Kyle Middlebrooks (7)drags a defender into the end-zone for the score.

On a long, slow drive for ASU in the 2
nd, Middlebrooks would leave the game with back spasms and ASU WR Rashad Ross would sit out a few plays with the wind knocked out him. Bercovici would hook up with WR Jamal Miles for another ASU touchdown, this time an 18 yd TD pass that made it 21-3. That capped a 10 play, 75 yd drive. ASU would get the ball back via INT by CB Robert Nelson. Cal would later score a TD from a long pass to the RB. Score is 24-10 at the half after an ASU FG with time expiring.

WR Jamal Miles (84) bulls through a crowd of defenders in the 2nd to earn himself a TD.

Not much excitement until late in the third. RB Kyle Middlebrooks would leave the game with concussion-like symptoms and would be unable to return. ASU backup RB Marion Grice would come in and do admirably in his fill-in job. On late drives in the quarter, ASU K Andy Garoutte would kick a yd FG, then a follow-up score on an 11 yd pass TD from Bercovici to WR Richard Smith would come the very next drive. The score would be 34-10 heading into the 4
th.

On the first drive in the 4
th, Cal would score on a short pass play, and convert the following 2-pt conversion. The score would be 34-18 after that. ASU would effectively burn off the clock with their run game and end the game comfortably at 34-18.

Re: Resurrection in the Valley of the Sun - an Arizona State Story

Arizona State Sun Press

Tempe, AZ - Since ASU has a BYE this week, we’re sitting down with Head Coach Sam Davis to talk about the season so far, and find out what he expects from the team moving forward.

Arizona Sun Press: So, Sam, first off, how do you feel the season has gone through the first 5 games?

Sam Davis: It’s been outstanding!! We’ve knocked off two really great schools in Michigan State and Utah, and both of those games had us picked as the underdog. It feels good to do something no one expects out of you. I’m proud of what my guys have done thus far. That being said, we still have a lot of room to improve and get better from here.

ASP: You’re undefeated so far in conference play, what does that mean as far as your hopes of a Pac-12 title?

SD: Well, we’ve only had two conference games to this point, so as happy as I am that we’re 2-0, I still know we have plenty of tests ahead of us. We’re just going to take it one game at a time and if we get the opportunity to play for a conference championship this year, we will take full advantage of it and give it our best shot. We still have to face USC, and that’s never easy…especially considering they’re the top team in the nation and Matt Barkley is having one HELL of a season thus far.

ASP: So, all things considered, do you feel this year has been a successful debut for you with this program?

SD: Ummm, so far…I’d say yes. But we still have 6 or 7 more games that will finish telling the story for us. We have to finish just as strong as we started or else our quick start has no meaning.

ASP: So what are your plans for the BYE this week?

SD: I really want to take this time to focus on recruiting. We’ve been in steady contact with a few kids and have a full list of prospects we’d like to bring in, but I’ll be honest, it’s been a weak year for us. Interest isn’t all that high for ASU right now, so we want to make sure we’re getting as much talent as we can coming in this year.

ASP: Have you had any commitments yet this season?

SD: No, no commitments. Nobody has signed their NLI for us yet, but we do have a few kids that have given us verbal commitments, which is a good sign. They can always change their minds though, so until we get them signed officially, I don’t really want to look too much into it.

ASP: Can you tell us their names?

SD: I cannot at this time. I keep my recruiting confidential until I know for sure that a guy is going to be here next fall. Until we get some of these guys signed and clear through NCAA eligibility, I won’t comment on specifics.

ASP: That’s all we have for you, Coach. We thank you for your time and your enthusiasm for this interview.

SD: No problem. I love the Sun Press. And I love our students. Anything to give something back to the wonderful ASU community.
