A quarterback controversy may be in the making as all three of Minnesota's quarterbacks played in an embarrassing loss to Kent State. The Gophers turned the ball over 5 times, 4 interceptions and 1 fumble, and all of those turnovers came from the guy behind center.

Senior Marqueis Gray would get the most time under center and would complete 9 passes for 100 yards but also throw 3 interceptions. Replacing him would be Freshman Philip Nelson but Nelson would be pulled after throwing his first interception also. The coaches then gave Sophomore Max Shortell a chance but that was ended after 4 plays and a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. Gray would then be inserted back into the lineup and finish the game.

The Gophers found no other success on offense either. Halfback James Gillum would only get 44 yards and 19 carries as the Kent State defense found a way to contain him and the Minnesota receivers highest reception total was only 3 for 37 yards. The offense had a serious hiccup and if they continue to play like this will find Big 10 play to be extremely painful.

Things on the defensive side weren't that bad looking. The Gophers only gave up 1 touchdown and 3 field goals and that was with the Kent State offense getting very generous field position because of turnovers. Proof you ask? The Gophers held Kent State to 282 yards, which is extremely low for a team in the pass happy MAC. Senior linebacker Mike Rallis would lead the defense having an excellent day by gathering up 12 total tackles. Safety Cedric Thompson would also have 8 tackles and defensive tackle Ra'shede Hageman would get 2 sacks on the day.

Western Michigan travels to Minneapolis to play the Gophers on September 15th and if Minnesota wants to turn their season around they need to blow away the competition.

Game Notes
Minnesota needs a big win here. There is a lot of critics for the Gophers and they need to disprove them this week. The quarterback controversy is still in the air as coach Jerry Kill stood by starter Marqueis Gray but didn't divulge any information if he would be replaced once again if he struggled.
