Re: Dark Green Machine | South Florida Football

Big East Football Prepares for Change
Written by Classic, digitalsportscene.net

When you compare the two, it's quite obvious that the Big East Conference is known for it's basketball. The annual Big East Basketball Conference tournament held in Madison Square Garden attracts attention from all-around as some of the best hoops teams in the nation compete for the conference title. The 16-team basketball conference holds teams such as DePaul, Seton Hall, St. Johns, Villanova and Providence. What do these schools have in common? No football division one football programs. Cutting the football conference short already. Furthermore, schools like Syracuse and Connecticut consistently put out some of the best basketball teams in the country, on the other hand, the football side of these schools are lackluster. And finally, Big East Basketball schools are not part of the football conference, Notre Dame, for example, is an Independent football school.

The 2012 football conference is stuck with eight teams, seven returning schools, with the edition of Temple from the Mid-American Conference. The question now, how successful can the Temple Owls be in their new surroundings? Unfortunately, Temple does not make up for the loss of West Virginia, but they do deserve respect from their new Big East rivals. Coming off a 9-4 season capped off with a New Mexico Bowl win where star running back Bernard Pierce led them to success, the Owls have confidence coming into the new year. Pierce went through the Temple system, and now is a rookie trying to earn his spot on the Baltimore Ravens, leaving the Owls to hope future talent just like him.

In 2013 the Big East has something more to be excited about. The plan is to split the Conference into two divisions, the East and West, after adding six new teams. Central Florida, Houston, Memphis and SMU from Conference USA, along with Boise State and San Diego State from the Mountain West. Meanwhile, the conference loses Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the ACC. After these additions the Conference title may no longer be appropiate, but it's all worth it if the football is revived.

By 2015, Navy is expected to join the conference making it a thirteen team conference. Possibly followed by Air Force, and Army, ECU, Georgia State, along with the exit of Louisville, Rutgers, and Connecticut a little bit farther down the road.
