Re: Friday Night Lights: The Revival

Panthers Pound Beavers, Improve to 3-0

From wire reports

Corvallis (OR) -

Sophomore quarterback J.D. McCoy, making his first career start, led the Dillon Panthers to a 63-21 victory over the Oregon State Beavers last night. Completing 23 of his 33 pass attempts for 362 yards, McCoy effectively managed the Panthers, who lost starting quarterback, Prince Alexander, to a broken shoulder last week against Tennessee. Alexander will miss the entire season.

If the Oregon State game was any indication, though, Dillon has found a replacement in McCoy, and maybe even a future star.

McCoy started off the game hot with three of his five touchdown passes in the second quarter alone. After finding his team trailing 7-0 after the first quarter, McCoy showed poise in the pocket as he completed pass after pass, leading his team to a 28-14 halftime lead. In only the second quarter, McCoy completed 12 of 13 passes for 158 yards, which led his team to the halftime lead.

Quarterback McCoy threw his final two touchdown passes in the third quarter, bringing the Panthers' lead to 42-14 and all but putting away the game.

Star running back Tim Riggins was only marginally effective against the Beavers' run defense, totaling 75 yards on 25 carries. Riggins did add two rushing touchdowns to the Panthers' cause, however.

In what has become a surprising story line in the early part of the season, senior wide receiver Ira Hutchinson managed only one catch in the game, bringing his season total to five receptions through three games. Many fans have been left wondering what could be going on with the team's leading receiver heading into this season.

Following a bye in the schedule next week, Dillon will open its Big 12 schedule with a home game against Kansas State, ranked 21st in the latest Coaches' Poll.

Lions Exact Revenge on Sooners

Dillon (TX) -

Don't look now, but the East Dillon Lions might finally be playing up to the potential that Head Coach Eric Taylor hinted at last season. After drubbing the #23 Oklahoma Sooners 46-26, the Lions now hold a five-game home winning streak. The team's last loss at home? A 51-24 defeat last season at the hands of Oklahoma.

"Oh yeah, we definitely had that on our minds," junior safety Kendrick Russell said after the game. "Coach had articles about last year's game posted on all the lockers in the locker room. It would have been hard to not think about Oklahoma beating us last year."

After surrendering a field goal on Oklahoma's first possession, East Dillon was able to surprise the Sooners defense by opening with three straight passes. Quarterback Vince Howard, who played in his first full game of the season, showed the poise of a senior as he directed his offense down the field with short, quick passes.

"The goal was to catch them off guard," Howard said after the game. "I think we did that. They didn't know what hit them."

Even though the Lions did not put up any points on the first drive, the tone was set. On the second drive, Howard seemed to follow each pass play with a quick handoff to running back Luke Cafferty, who finally found an opening and raced 69 yards for a touchdown and 7-3 lead. Soon after, the Lions found themselves ahead 14-3 after a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown by the defensive captain, Russell.

"That really put us over the top," Russell said of his first of two interceptions. "Our sideline was into it. The fans were into it. We wanted to come out quick and jump on Oklahoma. I actually had to calm myself down as I was running back that interception. I knew what we were doing as a team and it was a tremendous feeling."

East Dillon managed to put another score on the board, leading at the half 21-3. Oklahoma, meanwhile, entered the locker room at halftime with well over 200 yards of total offense but 3 total points.

"We had been preaching bend-but-don't-break defense all week," Taylor said. "Everyone knows about our weak secondary. Hell, even our secondary knows. We had to find a way to not allow a whole bunch of points even while giving up big pass plays."

Oklahoma did find success with the big pass plays, but only after starting quarterback Blake Bell exited the game with an injury. Backup quarterback Drew Allen threw for 345 yards but was never quite able to bring his team back in the game.

"Losing Bell was obviously a big moment for them," Howard said. "He's a great quarterback, a great competitor too, and Coach said after the game that he'll be fine, which is great to hear because he's a good thing for the Big 12."

While losing Bell did hurt the Sooners offense in the first half with the lack of big-play potential, the injury also inhibited the ground game for the Sooners, as the mobile Bell usually provides a real second option to the Sooners' starting running back, Roy Finch. Finch finished the game with 17 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, East Dillon turned in what could be considered one of its finest performances, especially against an offensive threat in Oklahoma. While allowing 345 yards through the air, the Lions defensive line limited the Sooners' rushing attack to 92 yards and was able to post 5 sacks in the game.

Next week, East Dillon will host Texas (4-0, 2-0) in the final game of a four-game home stand.

Re: Friday Night Lights: The Revival

PANTHERS TAME THE WILDCATS

The Dillon Panthers continued their undefeated season in week 4 following their bye week by destroying Kansas State. Kansas State had some high preseason hopes but after an opening season loss to Pitt, a loss to #1 rated LSU, and now a loss to the Dillon Panthers, they seem like an easy opponent.

Dillon started off slow but ended up turning on the burners and manhandling the Wildcats. "We struggled a bit to begin the game, but caught fire as the first quarter came to a close and never looked back" Coach Aikman said.

The Panthers did it both in the air and on the ground despite an injury to Tim Riggins to begin the 2nd half. "That was a huge loss for the game, but luckily we were already pretty far ahead" said Sophomore QB J.D. McCoy.

"Coach Aikman preaches that the next guy must be ready to fill in at any moment, so that's what I did there. We practice that way so there weren't really many nerves going through my body when I got told it was my turn" fellow junior RB Tim Shaffer said about coming into the game when Riggins went down with an injury.

The Panthers went into half with a 24-7 lead and just kept piling on the points. Dillon's defense also came up huge with 2 interceptions and a forced fumble in the rout of the Wildcats. In a game that saw many fans leave after the third quarter, Dillon put on a great show for their fans. Ira Hutchinson finally got more involved as well and had 3 catches for 103 yards and a TD, including his 80 yard TD catch to end the first half. "Yeah, he has been rather quiet so far this year. We have been a fairly balanced team on offense and he just makes the most of each and every opportunity he has" Wade Aikman was quoted as saying about getting Ira more involved.

The Dillon Panthers will try to get another big win as they travel to Norman, Oklahoma to take on the Sooners who got beat this week by the cross-town East Dillon Lions.

Dillon Panthers Coaches Show

Coach, first things first, how does that win over Kansas St feel?
Quote:
"It feels great, obviously. Kansas St is a good team despite what their record shows."
Any major improvements you see that your team will be making this week?
Quote:
"Not any major changes. We just have to improve week to week."
Any news on Riggins?
Quote:
"Yeah he is fine. Just a stinger that kept him out of the game for precautionary reasons, especially being up as much as we were."
Will this hurt his Heisman chances, you think?
Quote:
"We don't care about individual awards. His goal and our goal is to win the national championship. We don't care about anything else and anything less is a failure."
Comments on Coach Taylor's response to you having a first place vote in the Coaches Poll?
Quote:
"What he says and does over there is his business. We are worried about Oklahoma."
Last question, what do you have to do to beat Oklahoma this week?
Quote:
"We will be on the road and that is a hostile environment. We need to get points on the board early and take care of the ball. They will be wanting to take out their loss to East Dillon on us and we have to stop them from doing that. We are preparing hard and will go out and play and let the chips fall where they may. Thanks for your time guys."

Re: Friday Night Lights: The Revival

Lions Continue Revenge Tour

Dillon (TX) -

The Texas Longhorns became the latest victim of the East Dillon Lions' revenge tour this past Saturday as the Lions played a near-perfect game on the defensive side of the ball to carry the team to a 24-7 victory. The win over Texas comes exactly 51 weeks after Texas defeated East Dillon 55-34, in large part to running back Malcolm Brown's breakout 276-yard performance.

There would be none of that this year.

Limiting the Texas offense to only 296 yards with only 90 coming on the ground (71 for Brown), the Lions played smart football to up the home win streak to six games, the fourth longest in the country.

Coming into the game, Texas quarterback David Ash was fifth in the NCAA in terms of passing yardage, and managed to throw for only 206 yards in his first visit to Lions Field. In terms of QB Rating, Ash played his worst game of the season, misfiring on 17 of his 28 passes with two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown in the third quarter.

"This was a statement game for us," coach Eric Taylor said after the game, still not smiling despite a 4-1 record on the season. "We played really well against Oklahoma, but our pass defense didn't have the game they wanted to. They bent a lot but didn't break. Fortunately in that game, that worked for us. We knew we had to come out strong against Texas and Ash. I'm proud of that unit today."

Perhaps most surprising of all is the fact that East Dillon won the game, handily, without star running back Luke Cafferty for most of the game. Cafferty went down with shoulder injury early in the first quarter and never returned. In his stead, senior backup Joshua Waller ran for 146 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. He added two receptions for 15 yards.

"I think every heart in the stadium sank when Luke went down," junior center Ivan Bright said. "But the offensive line was up to the task. We all know Luke is a great back, one of the best in the country, but we create holes for him, and we knew we could still do it for Josh. He stepped up big time."

Adding to the Lions' misery during the game was the loss of freshman running back and return specialist Jeff Foster. Foster went down after catching a short pass in the second quarter and is expected to miss 11 weeks with a foot fracture. It is possible he could make it back for a bowl game.

Quarterback Vince Howard continued his effective play this season, completing 66 percent of his passes for 224 yards and one touchdown. Howard also threw two interceptions.

"Overall, that was probably the best game we've played as a team," Howard said. "To date, it's either been the offense playing really well and the defense struggling, or the other way around. We finally showed ourselves that we can put every phase of the game together."

East Dillon, debuting in the Coaches' Poll for the first time in school history at #25, will play at #7-ranked Texas Tech (4-0, 1-0) next week. It is the two schools' first meeting and East Dillon's first road game since a week one loss at Washington State. The following game, against Temple on October 13, is Homecoming.

NCAA Takes Control

Indianapolis (IN) -

Citing potential irreversible damage to the game of college football, the NCAA took charge and gained control of the individual football conferences earlier today, at least for the time being.

"The past three years have been nothing but a big headache for everyone," NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a teleconference from his office in Indianapolis. "You have the big conferences going after the only thing take makes sense to them: Money. It's not working, and it's eventually going to destroy the game. We needed to step in before the sanctity of the game is compromised."

Immediately following Maryland's departure from the ACC in order to move to the Big Ten, Emmert sent out a memorandum that detailed the NCAA's involvement. It's a complete takeover.

It is believed that Maryland's move to the Big Ten will be allowed, as will Rutgers' impending move. Anything after that, apparently, must be approved by Emmert.

Sources also say that the NCAA has discussed and passed a resolution to make college football much like European soccer, in that there will be a relegation system in place as early as next season.

It is believed that the relegation system will outline a "Group of 5" major conferences (ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC), two mid-tier conferences (Big East and Mountain West), and four lower-tier conferences, including one independent school (Conference USA, MAC, Sun Belt, and WAC).

The Conference USA and Mid-American conferences would both feed into the Big East. The Sun Belt and Western Athletic conferences would feed into the Mountain West. From there, the Big East would feed into either the ACC, Big Ten, or SEC, depending on location, and the Mountain West would feed into either the Big 12 or Pac-12.

Following each season, the NCAA will look at individual team records and final conference order to determine the teams that will move up or down. All winners in the lower-tier conferences will gain admission into either the Big East or Mountain West, and replace the bottom two teams in each conference. Additionally, the winner of the Big East will join one of the three linked "Group of 5" conferences, again depending on location, and the winner of the Mountain West will join either the Big 12 or Pac-12.

"We think this will promote an unparalleled level of competition within college football," Emmert said before finishing his teleconference. "We are excited to see where this leads."

Re: Friday Night Lights: The Revival

A Game of Inches

Lubbock (TX) -

One inch. That's how it was described by East Dillon head coach Eric Taylor.

One inch separated East Dillon from its fifth straight win and an 0-2 start on the road this season.

Unfortunately for the Lions, that inch fell in favor of the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Trailing by one, 17-16, late in the game, the Lions gained possession of the ball after a punt in about 3:30 left in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Sam Seals, playing in place of an injured Vince Howard, led the team down the field, converting a crucial fourth down by ... one inch.

"That inch fell in our favor," Taylor said after the game, when referencing the completed pass to Johnnie Hooper.

Seals delivered a pass that was behind Hooper, who had to stop his momentum, catch the ball, and will his way to the first down line. The officials' measurement showed the Lions kept the ball, and the hopes, by about an inch.

With five seconds left in the game, still down one point, East Dillon called a timeout after a 7-yard run by Luke Cafferty, a run that set up a 41-yard field goal attempt.

"I felt good about the situation," Taylor said. "A 41-yarder isn't a gimme, but it's an easier kick for Kenton. We all felt good standing on the sideline."

Following a timeout by Texas Tech to "ice" the kicker, Lions kicker Kenton Schmidt lined up to win the game for East Dillon. The kick started left, looked to turn back inside the uprights, and ultimately hit off the left upright, giving the Red Raiders a 17-16 win.

"I've never felt like this after a game," Cafferty said. "It's one thing to lose and lose handily. That happens. But to have a win escape your grasp like that is something I don't think I'll ever be able to handle real well."

For the Lions, the loss means they have yet to win on the road this season, following a four-game win streak during the most recent home stand.

"Where we are right now is one game better than where we were last year. Obviously I think we should be 5-1 or 6-0 right now, but I can't change the games that have been played. I can only look ahead and focus on those games," Taylor added during his post-game press conference.

"I'll allow the team to stew on this tonight, but tomorrow it is full-steam ahead in our preparations for Temple. We can't let this loss eat at us too long."

East Dillon returns home this weekend to take on Temple University in the school's Homecoming game. Texas Tech, meanwhile, will also travel to Dillon next week as the Red Raiders will play the #3-ranked Panthers in what could be a matchup of top-five teams.
