I'm More Than Just A "Game Manager": The Alex Smith Story

The 2011 49ers were essentially a muffed kick away from completing their cinderella season with a superbowl berth, but as the previous sentence points out, that wasn't exactly the case. Alex Smith, the former first round pick seemed to finally get things together under center surpassing career bests in most offensive caterories. Despite the increase in production, Smith was still unable to garner the confidence of the football world.

"He's just a game manager, nothing more, nothing less" - Skip Bayless

"The 49ers have a punishing run game and the best defense in the league, any QB could win under those situations" - Trey Wingo

"17 touchdowns and 3,100 yards sounds like a stat line for a game manager to me." - Shannon Sharpe

As Alex Smith ented his car to drive back to his family following the loss, Smith made a decision that would change not only his football career, but his life in general.

"Game manager....GAME MANAGER" he shouted as he slammed his fist into his stearing wheel, "I'll show them...I'll show them all, its elite or bust next year...what ever it takes, they'll respect me, they'll respect Alex Smith."

This 'chise will be a more light chise to rotate from my other active Raiders Franchise. Expect it to be more of a narrative as well, from the third person perspective. Hope you guys like it.

            Chapter One: The Return

Two months have passed since the giants beat the 49ers, eventually becoming NFL champions, but for Alex Smith, it seemed like an eternity. The sting of defeat mixed with the seemingly unlimited amount of doubted turned Alex Smith's offseason into a personal hell. The word around the league was that Harbaugh and company had their eyes on bringing in another QB from the free agent pool, particuarly Peyton Manning, the eventual hall of famer. Harbaugh had even gone on record saying that Kaepernick was the start of the future, which turned many 49er fans off of bringing Smith back for another season. After a long day at the gym with fellow 49er Michael Crabtree, Smith returned home to his loving wife Elizabeth Smith, a visably tired, yet determined man.

"How was your day at the gym hun?" said Elizabeth, "Fine, got some good reps in" replied Alex. Elizabeth could tell something was bother Alex but decided to just let her husband work out his problems alone. She knew that nothing she could say could possible calm the rage going through him right now. He was an unwanted man. To him, he was the joke of the NFL.

"how many Qbs can go 13-3...and still have their team not want him the next year...ALEX SMITH THATS WHO!" - Colin Cowherd on his Sports talk Radio show

Alex steadily walked on his patio and plopped into one of the many lawn chairs that scattered his backyard. Before he could begin to do anything his phone began to ring. It was his agent Tom Condon. "3 years, 24 millions" he coldly said to the former Ute. "Thats it!?" shrieked Smith, "Thats all their offering?". Condon took a deep breath before explaining to Smith the delacacies of negotiating a contract. "Look Alex, the 49ers want Manning, but they can't get him. You have two options return to the 49ers and accept their offer, or look at other teams, Miami has been calling about your services for the last few days. But to be honest, you wont win anything their at the moment, just take the offer, its the best for your and Elizabeth." Alex Stood up from his chair, clinching his fists before calmly saying "I'll take it, i'll call Harbaugh tommorow." He hung up, it was over, he was still a 49er at least for three more years. One thing however that isn't guaranteed is his starting position., the young upstart Keapernick has been making noise all over the NFL, his skill set is almost identical to Alex Smith, except for one thing, he has much much more Arm Strength.

An idea popped into Smith's head, he snatched his phone up and furiously began dialing numbers into his keypad. The phone rang about four times before a grizzly voice replied "what do you want?" Smith, a little put off by the reception simply replied, "I need your help, i have a few months till preseason..i need to silence all the doubters. Will your help me train?" The man on the other side of the phone paused for a minuted before telling Smith, "This is going to be the most strenuous QB camp you've ever experience kid, eating lightning and crapping thunder will be nothing compared to what i will expect from you. You give me your 110% every step of the way, you prepared for that? Smith instantly replied "Yes." The man on the phone chuckled for a few seconds before giving Smith the directions on where he would be meeting him. Smith returned to his home with a huge grin on his face, it looks like Smith is heading to Mississippi.
